Hassan Haskins - Next Man Up?

Submitted by Nervous Bird on September 18th, 2019 at 9:22 PM

When he joined the 2018 recruiting class, I thought that Hassan Haskins could be a good player for the Wolverines. He was extremely productive in high school, but he was hurt by running a 4.7 40 at some camp. However, he did have a good 100m dash, and high jump as a track athlete. It's possible that he was simply not good at coming out of the blocks.

His high school tape shows a natural runner with good vision, and good lateral quickness. Apparently, the coaches saw the same thing. Coach Gattis spoke highly of him during fall camp, as well. However, after missing a block, which led to a sack versus MTSU, Haskins didn't get back in the game until garbage time, and he didn't see the field against Army. But, at 6'1" 220 lbs, Hassan Haskins can pick up some of the slack from the Charbonnet injury. He's a big back like Charbonnet, and he does run with some power.

I know that Pass Pro is integral to getting on and staying on the field, but if the young man can really run the ball, the coaching staff may have to roll the dice and give him the chance to be the Thunder to Turner's Lightning. I thought that it was a mistake to not trust Turner more after his missed block versus Army, and I think it'd be a mistake to have a quick hook for Haskins this weekend. They recruited him because he was a quality, productive running back. Let's see him get a chance to prove them right or wrong. Here's his high school tape for viewing.

So if I don't feel like wading through 300 posts of guys slinging insults at each other, where are we with the Zach Charbonnet injury at this point?  Still a rumor started by shady individuals but not disproven by the good sources, or more substantial now?

Isaiah hole literally tweeted that he wouldn't be fielding any charbonnet injury questions tmrw because his policy is to "not discuss injuries that haven't been publicly confirmed by Michigan" If that doesn't say it all then idk what does. He's out guys. Turner time.

Lol that's not the response you give when someone is not injured. If there is no injury then you simply don't say that you can't talk about injuries unless it's public. We can agree to disagree that's fine and I really hope you're right on this one. Either way maybe Jackson and Dax get some looks after turner? Would be nice

ZC is the most complete back we have had in a long time. BUT I actually thought we were hurt more than was apparent when Turner was knocked out versus the chop-blockers. ZC has a little Le’Veon Bell to his game in that he seems to really use his eyes and wait for things to develop (which is fantastic) but Turner’s very direct style may have been better near the end of the game when we needed some quick hitting yards. I really like the two as a combo but if ZC is out all is not lost.

We have no reason to think he is injured.  Now that the rumor is out there, do you think Harbaugh is going to reveal his playing status?  I don’t think so.  Most of the people on this blog have gone full retard over the last couple of years.  Maybe time to move on from this blog . . .

Agreed. This place used to be a great place for level-headed discourse and intelligent football discussions. I remember when this comment section wasn't a cesspool approaching the likes of Youtube.

Now 1/3 of it is trolls trolling, 1/3 is people arguing with trolls, and the other 1/3 is commenters and contributors I used to respect giving into the BPONE.

I think I'll see you guys during basketball season, assuming the ceiling of Crisler isn't caving in.

If Haskins needs to play at some point, Michigan should be okay because all they run is downhill anyway.

"Oh, you need to run inside zone straight at the teeth of the defense? I'm perfect for the job!"

If Michigan ever gets decent at diversifying the offense with tosses, power reads, etc., then I don't think Haskins will be very effective. He was a better option, IMO, when Michigan had a fullback in the offense and was running some iso, power, down, etc.

I'm not sure about your last assessment. In the tape, he ran exclusively out of the spread in an offense that looks similar to what Michigan has been running.

However, i do agree that he could be effective in this upcoming game. Thanks for replying to what was actually in the OP. I simply wanted a discussion about possible options if, indeed, Charbonnet is out.

Virtually any FBS-level running back can be successful in virtually any high school offense. Charbonnet could have been good in the spread, or as a dive back in the triple option, or as an I-formation back.

But just because Haskins was good in a "spread" offense in high school doesn't mean that will translate to college. His quickness in and out of breaks (or lack of quickness) is a concern for any play designed to go slightly east and west.

When I watched his tape, I observed the lateral quickness that you speak of being necessary for a spread system running back. His quickness was one of the things that stood out to me.

I'd like for us all to find out what kind of game he is, though. From the looks of the tape, he seems to have the skillset to be a good back in any system.

Let's hope he surprises you, and performs as I'd expect him to.
