I agree, Rhule would be a good hire. Fickell would, too; unclear why he isn't mentioned, but it's possible that Fickell has sent "no" signals already.

I'd be very happy with a Rhule hire. Not a sure thing, of course; nothing is. Tom Herman was my second choice in 14/15 and has since been fired, and Dan Mullen was another solid candidate that looked great after that at times and has since been fired.

I'm curious what reasons are given by Balas that Gattis isn't a serious candidate. Not doubting, just curious. I will say that an internal hire is trickier because the staff is so young.

You're going to get negged for this because there's a lot of piss ants on this board but it's completely human to have a negative reaction. I'm pretty fucking ambivalent about him at this point if he leaves. Stay at Michigan and become a legend or stay in the NFL a max 3-4 years? I appreciate what he brought to this program and what he built but also screw him for leaving us like this. Puts to question a lot of the platitudes and he said about Michigan and it being such a special place over the years.

I'm in this boat, too, but more like, "F him." A kinder, gentler FU. I'm not an NFL fan so I likely won't think much about him should this transpire. My report card for Jim would be, "Had one pretty spectacular season, five seasons at expectation, and one dreadful season, likely due to circumstances beyond his control. He seemed to have lost his mojo for awhile, for reasons unknown. He was better than his predecessors but probably didn't live up to the hype, excluding his last year. He will be remembered as a good, solid coach who managed the program with integrity."

This whole thing is odd and sucks. Doesn't seem like the best option from weather, to whom the QB will be after next year, needing to rebuild the defense, etc.

It also seems spiteful on Harbaugh's part quite frankly,  who knows.

I just hope we get a decent enough guy to replace him and that it doesn't impact the program too negatively as well.

I have to admit, I am pissed.

I've been a Harbaugh guy through and through (see for example this), even during the down year.

But for him to bail now - I just think it's lame.

It tarnishes my image of him as a Michigan coach. Sure, he had a great last year, but he left at a time when staying could have really set a trajectory for a long time.

While I wish him well, I just don't think of him in the same light anymore.

In no way will Harbaugh now be a legendary coach, but a guy who resuscitated his career with a great season and moved on. I too have remained a fan, but this move--even if the personal rationale is, for him, sound--cannot warm the cockles of anyone's heart.

Rule is a guy who people will warm to early, anyway. There would be too many questions around a Gattis or Hart. Gattis had only definitively turned things around this year; in time he could well prove worthy, but for now would be doubted. Hart was in year one, right?

Some concerning items in the article for sure. Which coaches might be leaving with him? Presumably Jay would go, hopefully nobody else. Hard pass on Rhule, really hope that’s not likely. As much as I love the idea of HC Mike Hart someday, I’d rather see what Gattis can do with this offense next year.

I know none of what I think or believe matters but I want to say it anyway.

I don't understand the allure of the NFL.  I prefer college football over the NFL for so many reasons.  Michigan is one of the 10 best jobs in the country, if not a top 5 job.  The team has finally gotten over the hump of beating OSU and winning a B1G championship.  Recruiting is trending up.  The team is on the brink of blowing the shit wide open.  Another 5 years or so of what he has produced over the past 7 years will enshrine him Michigan football lore.  He'll probably have a damn statue on campus or an athletic building named after him some years from now.  THAT is a legacy.

If Harbaugh really wants to coach a mediocre NFL team in a mediocre division then whatever I guess.  His thought processes are vastly different from mine.

Well, bye Felicia gif.

The worst thing about this is all the fucking CC threads we'll have to endure.  Today was just small glimpse of what's coming.
