Harbaugh on Partridge

Submitted by Clarence Boddicker on

He's a fan. The money quotes:

"'He's doing an amazing job. If I had one more spot, another spot on the coaching staff, it would be Chris Partridge,' Harbaugh said Tuesday evening. 'I've really been that impressed with him as a coach.'"

"'You don't know what (might) happen with the hiring cycles, once the pro hiring cycles begin,' he said. 'But it can't be soon enough to get Chris Partridge as a full-time coach. I've been that impressed with him.'"

"'He's a shining star, he's a rising superstar in this profession,' Harbaugh said. 'We'll find (something).'"

Base salaries of University employees are a matter of public record. It does not include any bonuses for performance or any other bonuses. I believe those types of bonuses that do not appear in the base salary are common for athletic department employees, but not sure for non-coaches. His base salary is $110k.

After turning down a likely chance to be a position coach with Durkin I don't see him leaving for anything. I don't see him getting an opportunity to coach anywhere better than Maryland. And I would guess he has an agreement with Harbaugh that the next position coach opening on defense is his.

Per my below comment !

I think this is more than critical. Durkin left for the dumpster fire Maryland.

Urban Oscar Meyer Weiner hired Gregory Schiano because of his ties to NJ and the DC Baltimore area.

Critical we keep his coach! This is a new hotbed for talent and top dogs in college are seeing it.

I wonder if some foreshadowing in the money quote about the pro cycle.

Options:

  • Partridge to NFL
  • Someone else to NFL making room for Partridge

I mean it would be a ridiculous step for Partridge to go from high school coach to recruiting coordinator to NFL position coach in a span of 15 months but if harbaugh wanted him away from Durkin out of principal I guess that could be a theory.

Not that much. A much earlier post from a couple months ago had him listed around $80,000 or thereabouts. Bet he got a boost for current responsibilities.

Speculating... it's likely Zordich or Jackson hearing something or expressing an interest to be back in the pro game. Then having Don Brown coach the D and a DB position and Patridge coach the LB's, that makes sense and isn't highly unlikely.

Things i would like to see before wishing a current staffer leaves and perma hiring Partridge.

1) how well he actually coaches LBs

2) how much energy he puts forth recruiting after his initial trial to earn the spot.

The first thing really worries me.  I would not like to give up on an excellent LB position coach to take a guy who can recruit well, but not that great of a coach.  Coaching > Talent, thank you for opening my eyes to this Brady Hoke and staff.

What is his track record as a LB coach?

Uhhhh, did you even read Harbaugh's quotes regarding his coaching ability?

"But it can't be soon enough to get Chris Partridge as a full-time coach. I've been that impressed with him."

Because your comment seems to completely ignore the fact that Harbaugh already thinks he is an excellent coach.

This is what I think is so awesome about the coaching profession--guys can actually get "the break" they need/want to advance their career. If Partridge wants to be a college or NFL coach he now officially well on his way. Sure it helps to have a background or experience at the college or NFL level at least as a player with the connections you make but a high school guy who is a great coach can get that kind of break if they meet the right people and prove themselves. This is great stuff and I hope this works or well for both him and us.

I saw above that Partridge has coached LB's in the past. But do we know where his specialty lies (if he has one)? I mean, he was a high school head coach before. But is he primarily a defensive guy? Is LB his primary position, or could he also do DB or DL? Is offense out of the question?

If you are searching for upward mobility in the football coaching profession you hitch your wagon to Harbaugh not Durkin. If it means waiting an extra year to make that first jump to position coach, so be it. The payoff will be worth it.

My thoughts too...Partridge is in a great position as it is being on a hot staff with a strong, highly regarded, at all levels HC. And at a historically great program. You don't give that up easy for a much more precarious position with the upstart at a program with no pedigree.

Maybe he has to wait a year or two longer..but that's to be expected at UM. Yet, the payoff for that patience is potentially pure gold.
