Harbaugh Interview with NBC

Submitted by G. Gulo of the Dale on August 9th, 2023 at 9:30 PM

NBC just dropped a nice interview with Coach.  He discusses J.J., the Big Ten, his favorite traditions, his gameday routine, how he knew that he wanted to coach, his fatherly relationship with his players, and so on.

However, for your viewing pleasure, don't overlook Jim's comments starting at 6:08, where the subtext isn't hard to miss.

It’s the tunnels fucking fault!! Every MSU fan. Even though I have personally watched Michigan & OSU walk through that tunnel in defeat and victory with hugs and handshakes on the field. OSU is a far far bigger rival and never has there been a fist fight/jumping/helmet swinging/punk/bullshit behavior than when MSU’s Melllllll Tuckers “im a horse shit coach” lead team came to town..

When asked about his favorite places to eat, he should have trolled the NCAA and mentioned his favorite burger place the Brown Jug.

Good answer there regarding the 6:08 mark.  However the answer to the prior question....yeeesh. Classic Harbaugh and devoid of any actual answer to the easy question!

7:57 - Game Day: "I'm superstitious about not being superstitious"

10:15 - Current Coaching Staff: "All our full time coaches right now. 10 of them. Will be head coaches. Mark my words. They are going to eventually be head coaches"

Is anyone else taking note of the fact that Harbaugh compared JJ and his teammates to dolphins playing with each other? One of the weirdest things I've ever heard a coach say and I love it.

Unless... MIAMI IS IN PLAY????? (obvious /s)

It isn't weird at all. You just have poor interpretive acumen. By alluding to "dolphins playing with each other" Harbaugh is clearly referencing the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who also "played [footbal] with each other" and finished the season as undefeated Super Bowl champions. I should not have to spell this out for you.

Kudos to Harbaugh for not taking the obvious bait when the interviewer mentioned some "recent action" in the tunnel, leading her to fake a nervous laugh.

Boo to UM for the very next answer (where he mentions Schembechler Hall a couple times). Rename the place, take down the statue, and if possible invent a time machine so that it gets done a long time ago.

I guess it would be better to add facts to our written knowledge about the man than to just tear everything down and pretend it never happened.  It all happened.  The winning, the building of adults, the abuse, the building of a culture, the revitalization of a fanbase, the apparent knowledge of the abuse.

It may be confusing, but it all happened, and shoving the entire 50+ years and counting history away because of one uncomfortable portion would be childish and wrong.

I hear that but still think a renaming is in order. You can still have a plaque sharing the good and the bad of Bo. There has to be at least one famous Michigan athlete/coach whose name is more inspiring to be the name of the building moving forward.

Yeah boy. I wouldn’t want a weirder dude coaching this team or even my own kids. Whoever interviews Harbaugh need to prepare by watching sergeant Schultz. He ain’t sayin shit.

The rest of the country is going to be sorta confused when Jim says his favorite Michigan tradition is coming out of a tunnel.

Just watched the interview and was struck by: how calm/cool/collected Coach is and how (relatively) normal he seemed. I mean, all football coaches are weirdos, including Harbaugh, but prior to the '21 season many of us were openly wondering about his mental state, a possible autism spectrum disorder, and/or some kind of medical problem that manifested as extremely strange responses to questions.

I'm not saying that in hindsight something wasn't going on--the Covid season was the culmination of an extremely stressful period in the program. But whatever that was seems to have been resolved through his self-examination and coaching staff changes after the '20 season, which has obviously led to one of the greatest, most successful periods of the modern era.

Onward to '23 and the National Championship!

Jim always tries to answer every question by saying something positive about a person, or people, or institutions, especially regarding the University.  I like that a lot.

If I had a chance to talk to him, I'd ask two questions:

* What new pearl of wisdom have you gotten this week from Jack Harbaugh?

* What has Jay Harbaugh done this week that's made you proud?
