Harbaugh Interview with NBC
NBC just dropped a nice interview with Coach. He discusses J.J., the Big Ten, his favorite traditions, his gameday routine, how he knew that he wanted to coach, his fatherly relationship with his players, and so on.
However, for your viewing pleasure, don't overlook Jim's comments starting at 6:08, where the subtext isn't hard to miss.
Phrasing of the title, I initially thought Harbaugh might be leaving for NBC.
Yep, gave me a scare for a minute there.

He wouldn’t last a week. Haha, being forced media, it would be so painful to watch.

Same!
The WB is in play.

"isn't hard to miss" --> "is hard to miss"

Hahaha. Thank you. I changed the wording there at the last minute, and apparently the Old Fashioned beside me took over. "B- ... proofreading."

The irony isn't hard to miss??!

It’s the tunnels fucking fault!! Every MSU fan. Even though I have personally watched Michigan & OSU walk through that tunnel in defeat and victory with hugs and handshakes on the field. OSU is a far far bigger rival and never has there been a fist fight/jumping/helmet swinging/punk/bullshit behavior than when MSU’s Melllllll Tuckers “im a horse shit coach” lead team came to town..
August 10th, 2023 at 7:38 AM ^
Dude, didn’t you hear?? UM players were asking for it when they were walking in the tunnels by themselves. Why do you think the bystander coaches didn’t do anything??

I was told one of them was skipping and laughing! How DARE they be happy after a win?
August 10th, 2023 at 12:48 PM ^
I don't know if Harbaugh is insinuating anything here. He might be, but plenty of Michigan players have said over the years what a rush it is to run out of that tunnel and see a massive stadium of 107,000 seats.

When asked about his favorite places to eat, he should have trolled the NCAA and mentioned his favorite burger place the Brown Jug.
August 10th, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
I think the Brown Jug should probably rename that burger.
Maybe "The Violater" or "The suspension"
Also, maybe the brown jug should never charge Harbaugh again? Just a thought

"The Nothingburger"

Coach Harbaugh is a kingpin.
August 9th, 2023 at 10:53 PM ^
Good answer there regarding the 6:08 mark. However the answer to the prior question....yeeesh. Classic Harbaugh and devoid of any actual answer to the easy question!
August 9th, 2023 at 11:06 PM ^
Seems borderline scarily normal but still had some Jim one-liners in there.
August 9th, 2023 at 11:09 PM ^
7:57 - Game Day: "I'm superstitious about not being superstitious"
10:15 - Current Coaching Staff: "All our full time coaches right now. 10 of them. Will be head coaches. Mark my words. They are going to eventually be head coaches"

I’m going to play as long as I can, then coach, then die. —5 year old Jimmy Harbaugh.
August 9th, 2023 at 11:44 PM ^
Is anyone else taking note of the fact that Harbaugh compared JJ and his teammates to dolphins playing with each other? One of the weirdest things I've ever heard a coach say and I love it.
Unless... MIAMI IS IN PLAY????? (obvious /s)
August 10th, 2023 at 1:05 PM ^
It isn't weird at all. You just have poor interpretive acumen. By alluding to "dolphins playing with each other" Harbaugh is clearly referencing the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who also "played [footbal] with each other" and finished the season as undefeated Super Bowl champions. I should not have to spell this out for you.
August 10th, 2023 at 12:04 AM ^
Kudos to Harbaugh for not taking the obvious bait when the interviewer mentioned some "recent action" in the tunnel, leading her to fake a nervous laugh.
Boo to UM for the very next answer (where he mentions Schembechler Hall a couple times). Rename the place, take down the statue, and if possible invent a time machine so that it gets done a long time ago.
August 10th, 2023 at 1:12 AM ^
I guess it would be better to add facts to our written knowledge about the man than to just tear everything down and pretend it never happened. It all happened. The winning, the building of adults, the abuse, the building of a culture, the revitalization of a fanbase, the apparent knowledge of the abuse.
It may be confusing, but it all happened, and shoving the entire 50+ years and counting history away because of one uncomfortable portion would be childish and wrong.

Oh christ, a double post. Apologies. Neg me some more, I got em to give.
August 10th, 2023 at 6:51 AM ^
Post more so I can neg more.
August 10th, 2023 at 1:18 AM ^
I'm not suggesting UM remove any mention of the fact that he was ever there from the record books.
"One uncomfortable portion" is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence.
August 10th, 2023 at 9:03 AM ^
I hear that but still think a renaming is in order. You can still have a plaque sharing the good and the bad of Bo. There has to be at least one famous Michigan athlete/coach whose name is more inspiring to be the name of the building moving forward.
August 10th, 2023 at 10:05 AM ^
No no no. Deny the past and bury out so you don't learn anything from it. That's the way people want to do it these days. It hurts their feelings too much to learn from the past.
August 10th, 2023 at 10:58 AM ^
I thought this board was aligned to removing the statue and renaming the building. Did that change? I'm not trying to argue, I'm genuinely curious.
August 10th, 2023 at 12:42 PM ^
I don't visit often enough to keep track of the varying winds of the board's collective opinion, but this post from Brian was only three years ago.
August 10th, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^
This is the only site I really visit (I’m not on any social media), so while the winds vary on this board at breakneck speeds, I’m usually on top of it. I guess I missed this one.
August 10th, 2023 at 1:44 PM ^
Same. I'm not aware of anything that changed over the past couple years with regard to the story, but judging from the responses, I'm wrong.

Guaranteed if he had named a restaurant she would have asked him if they served good hamburgers. Never trust the media.
August 10th, 2023 at 6:51 AM ^
Yeah boy. I wouldn’t want a weirder dude coaching this team or even my own kids. Whoever interviews Harbaugh need to prepare by watching sergeant Schultz. He ain’t sayin shit.
August 10th, 2023 at 8:28 AM ^
The rest of the country is going to be sorta confused when Jim says his favorite Michigan tradition is coming out of a tunnel.
August 10th, 2023 at 8:40 AM ^
Just watched the interview and was struck by: how calm/cool/collected Coach is and how (relatively) normal he seemed. I mean, all football coaches are weirdos, including Harbaugh, but prior to the '21 season many of us were openly wondering about his mental state, a possible autism spectrum disorder, and/or some kind of medical problem that manifested as extremely strange responses to questions.
I'm not saying that in hindsight something wasn't going on--the Covid season was the culmination of an extremely stressful period in the program. But whatever that was seems to have been resolved through his self-examination and coaching staff changes after the '20 season, which has obviously led to one of the greatest, most successful periods of the modern era.
Onward to '23 and the National Championship!
August 10th, 2023 at 9:18 AM ^
Jim always tries to answer every question by saying something positive about a person, or people, or institutions, especially regarding the University. I like that a lot.
If I had a chance to talk to him, I'd ask two questions:
* What new pearl of wisdom have you gotten this week from Jack Harbaugh?
* What has Jay Harbaugh done this week that's made you proud?
