Actually, Gene Chizik resigned as UNC's DC earlier this year:

Chizik's family chose to stay in Auburn, AL and he just commuted back and forth from UNC. After 2 years of commuting, Chizik decided he was missing too much of his children's lives, so he opted to step away from coaching at least until his son is done with high school.

Wow, it's amazing that only 4 active CFB head coaches have won NCs at the D1 level.

And two of them have only won it once in razor-close games that came down to essentially a coin flip.

It shows that if Harbaugh can get it rolling, he can win multiple NCs at Michigan.

How so? To me, it shows that it is really easy to be a top-tier coach, and still not win a National Championship, let alone multiple ones.

For example, I considered Frank Beamer, Mark Richt, and Bob Stoops as championship-caliber coaches, and between the 3 of them at VaTech, UGA, and Oklahoma they have a 573-220 (0.722) record and 1 National Championship.

I think it's the combination of Hatrbaugh + Michigan.

In all honesty, I don't think Harbaugh could win an NC if he stayed at Stanford.

Stoops did win a NC at Oklahoma, Beamer is a great coach but he could never recruit at the very highest level at VT, and Mark Richt . . . eh, I got no answer for Mark Richt.

You guys like to hate on me and call me a troll, but facts are facts. Show me where Harbaugh has won a championship? He has yet to do it. I am giving you straight up facts and you are replying with "hurrrr durrr I have nothing to contribute so I'm going to call this guy a troll and an idiot to try and save face." I love the guy, he has proven he has the ability to turn programs around. Stanford was a nobody school until Harbaugh showed up. He turned San Fran around right away. And he fixed the mess that Michigan was in immediately. But there are prime time coaches and then there are really really good but not yet prime time coaches. Get ready to hand out some more negs but one of the elite guys, who is one of the few coaches to win titles at different schools, is coaching for o$u.  Harbaugh is not yet at that level. Here's hoping he gets there.

Harbaugh has already shown your mom where he won a championship. And Harbaugh accomplished more than Sabah did in the NFL, so that means he is better, right? Also, you're fucking awful and if you have a dog, it hates you

It's a Kluneberg. From "The League". Don't remember the actual name, but someone on the show called it "penis bird attacking ass mountain", so that's what I think when I see it.

NOT.The nfl is the pinicle assclown. Why do I have to keep explaining this to you. The NFC  championship is higher than anything in college. Urban Meyer is always referred to as a great college football coach. He will never ever ever have the same respect as Harbaugh because he is a pussy who needs to have top players to win. Shit he is recruiting at the top level in the big ten and has been for years and he cant even win the big ten east anymore. Urban Meyer is like a kid who holds a high school record and never plays college ball.....nobody cares. The top level football is played on sunday and when people are watching there is no college coach they think of and respect unless they have been to the league and they really respect them if they have been to the pinicle. Any coach in the NFL is at a higher level than Meyer. Meyer is an elite recruiter and that is all. There is no recruiting advantages in the NFL and Meyer knows it and will not go and that is if any teams even want him. Sorry but an NFC championship trumps 200,000,000 college championships unless you feel a high school coach who has ten championships is a much greater coach than Meyer.

"Why do I have to keep explaining this to you. The NFC  championship "

For the same reason I have to explain to you that 2nd place is the first loser. You seem to have a hard time understanding that. Maybe you need an illustration. I understand that not all of us are readers.

1st place <------ where you want to be.

2nd place <------- not where you want to be.

You need to know when to just step back and take your losses. I cycle going from 6 or 7 points to negative 30. Not that points are currency...but this board is like a pack of pitbulls in a yard with a 5 year old. It's cool till one nips them, then the others see and rip them apart. It's a warped kind of camaraderie that I've experienced more than I'd like. I've learned that some people are posters, some just read the banter. I accept my limitations, you should too.

basically contradicts itself. Only an elite coach can turn a crap program/team around and have sustained succes after doing that. How many coaches have done that at every stop. It's just a matter of time before he has "his" entire team put together and wins an NC. The fact it hasn't happened yet does not lessen how great of a coach he is.

Chris Petersen at Washington is the only one on that list that I can reasonably see winning a championship before Harbaugh. Mainly because Petersen already took Washington to the CFP last year, and that was in his 3rd year on the job.

If Petersen can segway that CFP appearance into landing some bigger recruits, I can see him making it over the hump in the next 1-2 years. Maybe even this upcoming season since the Huskies are returning Jake Browning and could repeat as Pac-12 Champions.

I could see Herman putting it together. Obviously, he is in rebuilding mode so he's may be 2-3 years away from putting together a competitive team and may be a year or two more from being championship caliber. If a new coach isn't going to put it together this year (I'd say it's unlikely), then Herman's chances of breaking through are much higher. While Helton (USC) and Richt (Miami(YTM)) both can collect talent, I don't think they're tactically inclined to win a championship. Herman and Petersen, who you have to have up there, since his team actually made the playoff, are the two behind Harbaugh for me.

is definitely a great coach and could easily be the next one to win an NC. He has the same huge type of hump to get over that Michigan does though. But instead of OSU he needs to find a way to always beat USC and that will be no easy feat as they are loaded most years and it appears Helton knows what he is doing.

BoFlex

June 21st, 2017 at 4:20 PM ^

That's with the added caveat that Washington and USC are in different division and aren't guaranteed to meet each other every year. So while Petersen has a similar "hump" to get over, there will be years (like this upcoming season) where he could potentially avoid that hump altogher. They could face potentially face Colorado in the PAC-12 Championship like last year wallop them 38-8 again and make it to the CFP.

I can see Peterson being up there, but I don't think he's occupying the same territory Harbaugh is.  Yes, he got to the playoff earlier, but he did it in an also-ran league last year when he played absolutely nobody (other than losing to USC).  And still they almost missed it!  Had Michigan beaten OSU, there is no chance in hell Washington would have been in the playoff.  Honestly, if Wisconsin would have won the B1G Championship game, and Colorado would have shown up in the PAC CG, I don't think UW gets in over Michigan.  Well, CU would had to have won that CG.  Point is, Washington was a tenuous playoff participant, at best.

The only way Harbaugh will win a National Title is if Urban Meyer decides to leave OSU in the next 2 or 3 years. As long as Meyer is at OSU it will never happen.

M-Dog

June 21st, 2017 at 11:18 AM ^

He took Meyer to 2 OT's with a spotty OL and a QB he did not recruit, in a game won on bad ref call.

His new Defensive coordinator shut down Meyer's one dimensional one-read-and-run offense convincingly.

He is recrutitng at an elite level, better than Michigan has ever recruited, even during all those years when Michigan was beating Ohio State regularly.

So what is it you see in the Harbaugh trajectory that says he won't ever be able to beat Urban Meyer?

BoFlex

June 21st, 2017 at 12:36 PM ^

One thing that Urban is always praised for is not being stagnant and constantly adjusting to fit the current landscape, even after a "successful" season. For example, before coming to Ohio State, Urban's offense was not known for producing elite running backs, and everyone didn't expect much from that position group. Lo and behold, Carlos Hyde, Ezekiel Elliott and Mike Weber have all had consecutive 1000+ rushing yard seasons now. Last year, Urban essentially fired his top 2 offensive coordinators after they led a statistically top-15 scoring offense to an 11-2 season. Sure, they had huge embarrassing loss to the eventual National Champions, but I still doubt that most coaches would have pulled the trigger and made a change like that. Replacing Tim Beck and Ed Warriner with Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day seems like a huge upgrade on paper. Wilson being a seasoned, offensive mind that led Indiana to some of the most explosive offenses in the B1G the last 5 years... and Ryan Day a relatively young, and former player/coach of Chip Kelly's coaching tree.

Urbz will retire due to the stress of Harbaugh beating him. He had health issued at UF once he had one sub-par season. Once he starts losing to Harbaugh,  the OSU fans will be a lot rougher on him than the UF fans. I can see him just throwing in the towel.

BoFlex

June 21st, 2017 at 3:50 PM ^

However, I think Urban's previous experiences with stress at UF has been motivating him to be more aggressive with his asst. coaching changes.

Urban pretty much said that part of the stress was caused by not having trust in his asst. coaches at Florida and micro-managing everything. Urban's coordinators at UF were constantly getting hired away (Dan Mullen, Greg Mattison, Charlie Strong, and etc.), so each time he was left with a slightly worse replacement.

Now it seems like Urban's MO is to hire co-coordinators and aggressive change coaches when he see fits. Co-coordinators to give him an immediate, and familiar replacement when the coordinator leaves, but he also fired DC Everett Withers, OC Tim Beck, and OC Ed Warriner after what most head coaches would consider "successful" seasons.
