Happy Thanksgiving Everybody - What's on the Menu?

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on November 23rd, 2023 at 5:49 AM

Mates,

Thanksgiving is here.  Soon after college was over I realized it was my favorite holiday.  Both Washington and Lincoln issued proclamations about it, with part of Washington's here:

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

He rightly points out some of the incredible benefits of the country we live in, not the least of which are liberty, tranquility, union and plenty (yeah, we could use a little more of those, but let's skip that discussion today).

Beyond that, most of us get to at least be with family or friends, have some enjoyable meals, and even this year, a fairly likely Lions victory - 8 pt favorites against the Pack today, an impossibility just a couple of years ago.

So here's to you having a relaxing day, a fun day, a day that renews bonds with loved ones.

And do tell, what is on the menu for food and activities today?  Regardless, I hope you have a very enjoyable day.

Go Blue, beat ohio!

nadev Slovenian (Eastern European) stuffing - basically a breakfast casserole of savory French toast and bacon stuffed into the turkey to form a loaf for slicing.  Bacon carries the day.

Anyone else disappointed with Dairy Queen not carrying the pumpkin blizzard this year?  That ends a 25-year tradition in my household going back to daddy-daughter fall dance.  Maybe an over-reaction to the pumpkin spice blow back?

Small group today -- two grandmas, my husband and two kids. We're having buttermilk brined turkey breast (works great), potatoes gratin, steamed green beans, cranberry sauce with blood oranges, gravy, and cheddar rolls. For dessert apple crumble and tiramisu. Everything but the tiramisu is gluten-free for one of the grandmas. Hope you all have an excellent turkey day.

Thanks, XM!  Happy Thanksgiving to you, yours and MGoEverybody here.

We tried something new this year.  Ours is a Harbaugh Thanksgiving.  Yes, we're giving thanks for Jim being our coach, and...

My MGoWife didnt' feel like cooking everything for everyone (7 of us total, 3 offspring and 2 of them have girlfriends attending) so she bought the feast from Cracker Barrel.  We just have to heat it all up.  Of course the wife made extra stuff too.  There's a lot of food.

My wife is British so we'll be eating fry up for the next week and a half.

Turkey, ham, and sides are the main course.

Apple pie with ice cream.

With a fair amount of wine..

I’m here in The. Worst. State. Ever.  SE suburbs of Cleveland. We like this branch of our family. None of them are OSU grads but their brains have been infected a bit with Buckey-ism so there is a bit of good-natured trash talk. My wife’s uncle did manage to clear the table last year when he started excusing Deshaun Watson’s behavior. We all just got up one by one after we finished our food.

Brought nine pounds of my famous brisket so that we aren’t limited to turkey.

Apparently Saucy Brew Works is putting out a special edition IPA tomorrow with Harbaugh Sign Stealing on the label. I’m going to pick up a few. Mgrowold, meet me at Pinecrest mall!

First Thanksgiving without my father; that'll be hard. And the rest of the family left town for the weekend so it's just me and my 95-year-old mother.

The two of us couldn't possibly get through a turkey. So this year it's

  • cornish hens w/ oyster stuffing
  • green beans and bacon in the crockpot
  • sweet potatoes w/ pineapple and brown sugar
  • pumpkin pie

Oops: left out the cranberry/orange sauce. Some of it's mixed into cherry jello, some of it's available to eat with the birds.

Work, because it's a Thursday and there are deadlines I don't control.

Steak on the grill, stuffed jalapenos - dinner with one of my kids later.

Football in the background. Go Lions (and Niners and Cowboys, I guess).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Unfortunately I won’t be attending anywhere. I got sick and have to stay home. Hoping the wifey brings home lots of leftovers though!

Wasn't feeling trying to make the turkey amazing.   So starting with an amazing cut of meat (prime rib) and making it epic.   Slow roasted with herb compoat butter with a red wine gravy made from braising the ribs

Happy Thanksgiving all! Got the whole family coming over and we were up until 1:00am prepping. Just so happens my birthday falls today as well. Family, turkey, cake, Lions and visions of a Buckeye beating. Who could ask for anything more?

Here’s hoping all of you have a happy and relaxing Thanksgiving with your family and friends. And for those of you alone today, hope you have a terrific day and know you’ve got all of us; although I’m not sure if that’s comforting or terrifying- the thought is there though.

Beef pot roast with onions, potatoes, and carrots. Sides of salad and stuffing with chocolate pudding for dessert. It's just me, my wife, and 2 little ones. Extended family is spread to all regions so we keep it small and simple. My boys will help me with the pudding. The kitties will get some roast juice in their food this evening.

Happy Thanksgiving! Go Blue!

My family has a tradition of cooking sauerkraut on Thanksgiving. Growing up, my Lithuanian grandmother would stuff the bird with it, instead of breaded stuffing. We no longer do that, but we cook it up as a side dish. We sometimes add Frank's Market kielbasa. This year I am in charge of the kraut, so my house smells like the late 1960s. Wayne Walker, Lem Barney, where are you?

Happy Thanksgiving and Go Blue!

We are, unfortunately, at my inlaws this year, which means mediocre food at best.  Luckily I'm bringing crab cheese appetizers and pierogi to class up the joint a bit.

On the bright side, Miss Hatter made it into town for the weekend so at least I have an intact family for a few days.  And someone to watch The Game with.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Mgobloggers on here!!

Doing the traditional turkey in the oven with mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, etc.

My BIL from Sterling Heights brought a peach pie from Romeo and my wife made a key lime pie and a pan of gluten free brownies for my brother.

Safe travels to all and Go Lions 🏈

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody! It is nice every once in awhile to stop and think how many things most of us have to be thankful for. My three children are grown, healthy, independent, and successful.

I've had some health challenges but should be able to go home from the hospital Monday and get strong enough to handle the 3rd phase of my cancer treatment: surgery.

The hospital food isn't all bad. They actually have a decent slice of turkey breast on the menu. Wha sucks is their instant mashed potatoes and canned gravy, so later today my daughter is going to bring me some mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and sweet potatoes.  It's amazing how carb heavy many of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes are.

Ran a 5K this morning.  Now for the traditional Thansgiving fare, plus a large helping of football.  Looking for a Lions win to set up the weekend's main event.  Counting on roasted buckeyes for dessert.

Classic Thanksgiving fare:  Turkey, stuffing, corn, dried corn (it's a PA Dutch thing), mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, fluffy dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and "something green" because my wife feels guilty (which I do not).

I am a Thanksgiving purist, I like a classic Thanksgiving menu.  People are constantly saying "Let's try something different this year."  And then I'm like: "What are you talking about??  Thanksgiving dinner is different, we only have it once a year.  Why would we need to do something else?"

MGoThanks, gang!  I’ve been tasked with bringing wine to our gathering and making some brussel sprouts.  Gonna go with apple and bacon.  Prepping while (hopefully) watching Lions get that long-overdue Turkey Day win.

Happy Thanksgiving, XM!

I have a turkey in the oven and a pork butt off the smoker that I will pull just before dinner. My wife made wild rice stuffing. We're headed over to her sister's house where we'll be with her extended family.

There's so much to be thankful for this year, and the blessings of Almighty God are the source of all.

Going to wife's parents house with my wife's immediate fam. We are making homemade cranberry sauce, others making homemade mashed potatoes, stuffing, meat stuffing, fresh veggies, spatchcock turkey + extra turkey breast. Traditional feast.

Lions better kick it into high gear, cuz my brother in law and fam are huge GB fans.

Deep frying the turkey since my mother in law's oven is out.

Rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, broccoli casserole, pecan pie and apple pie. I think pumpkin pie is up in the air.

It'll be interesting to see how all this gets accomplished with one of those all in one large air fryers that can bake, broil, etc. I'm doing some stuff to help her out but it's still going to have to be warmed up a bit 🤷‍♀️

This was a typical Lions Turkey day game! This was a game they needed. I’m not sure they will make the playoffs now. Defense does not look dominate any longer and offense turns the ball over too often!
