Happy Juneteenth!

Freedom for all!

"On June 19, 1865, about two months after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Va., Gordon Granger, a Union general, arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued nearly two and a half years earlier, on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.

The holiday is also called “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day.”"

May this holiday lead to further healing for our young nation as we recognize our past in all it's complexity and continue our growth towards being a more perfect union- without judgement, and with freedom for all.

Go ask the kids growing up on the south side of Chicago or in the projects of Baltimore how they feel about Juneteenth.

I'm all for equality for everyone. We have done a terrible job making strides in that regards.

Equality doesn't exist in this country, slavery still exists (Google the corporations who use prison labor..)

But yeah this holiday is a step in the right direction I suppose. Maybe in another couple hundred years a black fella can get pulled over by the police and not get shot at a disproportionate rate.

9000 Black Americans are murdered annually. Approximately 300 by the police. Black Americans make up more than half of homicide victims.

Equality doesn’t exist in any society. We don’t love strangers as we do family or friends. We value professions differently. We acknowledge differences in strength and intelligence. The only equality that exists is that all who live will die. That’s it.

People in prison owe society a debt. Having them pay it back through regulated and supervised  work isn’t slavery. Better for them to have something to occupy part of their time rather than sit in a cell for 20 hours a day or in the yard where gangs form and fight.

Let them do something that can benefit society. Not saying that is working for a corporation necessarily or anything dangerous.

People in prison owe a debt.

The debt is being paid by sitting in prison.  Packaging beef for McDonald's while being paid $0.13/day isn't repaying shit.

Its allowing an already too big corporation grow even more profits

So you're a smart guy but you can spare me this nonsense.

You know.  You've taken personal jabs at me in this thread for no reason whatsoever, whereas I've never said a bad word about you.

With that, your post is something with which I do agree (surprise!).  I've often thought that we should put the prison population to work, but pay them a market rate for their work and have them save the money for them to use when they are released from prison.  What's more, provide them resources to save/invest their earnings to maximize the amount upon release.

Inmates who are in for life are different story.  Not sure how to handle those people.

my family came to the US from Europe long after slavery had been abolished.   the germans and russians were taking turns oppressing and mistreating us while all that was transpiring here in the USA.

i'm not sure if i'm allowed to buy a mattress (which i already disavowed), take the day off work (I'm actually working today), celebrate, mourn, show my face in public, don't shave or bath and wear only burlap???    there's a lot of talk about how different races should be handling today.   i was only making the point that my family, who happen to be caucasion, weren't even in the US when these injustices were happening and certainly weren't responsible for any of them.... so why wouldn't we celebrate the freedom of our fellow man?

i didn't make any comparisons to anyone's suffering or hardships.

Coolstorybro alert:

My first exposure to Juneteenth was in, uh, June, of 1991. My fiancee and I had just moved to DC and were looking for something to do on a weekend. We saw in the City Paper (probably) that there was this thing called a "Juneteenth" celebration in Anacostia SE.

So we drove across the river, parked at a park (probably Anacostia Park, although I don't remember specifically), and witnessed a fucking awesome celebratory festival. We had no idea of the cultural significance of Juneteenth, nor the bad rep of Anacostia, but we had a ball and felt totally welcomed and glad to be witnesses to so much joy.

Thus endeth the cool story bro.

People sure do bitch about this holiday a lot. I'll give it a try I guess.  Look at us celebrating the end of slavery by virtue signaling on our phones made with parts like cobalt that were dug out of a pit using child labor in horrific conditions somewhere in the Congo so that my fat ass can sit on my couch and type some overly long incoherent rant on my phone. All in a world with more slavery than ever before that is mostly of the sex trade variety, but yes we're good people because we say we don't like the bad things to strangers online and we took a day off and got some chores done and chimed in with our very important feelings about a previously obscure to most, but meaningful, holiday that our govt made national and will commercialize to create the appearance of progress. One thing is true. We are all eqauls.  We don't care how the sausage is made as long as it finds it's way down our wide wanting gullets.

Do I hate slavery? Duh.  Am I gonna continue to live my life blissfully unaware and disconnected from the harsh realities of our world and continue to do what I do every day? Absolutely. Am I occasionally gonna have some fleeting thoughts or emotion about some shit I can't do anything about that ultimately means fuck all because the powers at be can't even change things and I'm 5000 levels removed/downstream? Yes, and its same for every last one of you filthy heathens regardless of what color, creed, or gender you are. Because we're ALL Americans and human beings that would have likely loved slavery had we been born in a different time and place. We're not good or bad or have some deeper insight.  We're just current. We just are. We're not gonna change anything in the long run. The powers at be win every time. It's inevitable. Forever.

Enjoy whatever few fleeting moment of joy you have in your life with those you love right in front of your face for as long as they're there. Treat everyone in your immediate surrounding with kindness and love. That's all the vast majority of us can do whether it's enough or not. Everything else is out of your control. Spoiler: none of us make it out alive or will be remembered in a few generations. So shut up about it all already . . . or don't and post a worthless reply that's as worthless, hypocritical, and as misinformed and full of poor opinions as my diatribe. Do whatever you want because that's what we'll all do anyway. Happy Juneteenth!

“We should improve societysomewhat by shooting these Kulaks.” There. I finished it for you.

Some of the worst atrocities were committed by people who supposedly were trying to improve society somewhat.

This is a super passionate topic which I assume won't end well on this board.  But before it's (potentially) deleted, let me just say that I (for one) am proud of this nation's recognition of this critical moment in our history, and I hope we continue to use opportunities like this holiday to educate our youth about the fundamental human values we hold sacred to our country's values.

Some white people resent when Black people get any sympathetic attention from white people or historically white institutions.  They respond by making passive aggressive comments on message boards.  Every year, on Junetwentieth, I buy a mattress in their honor.

Wouldn't the appropriate observation of Juneteenth involve giving Black people the day off while making white people work without pay?

That seems like the least we could do.

Holy shit, folks---what a fetid mess this thread became as the day went on yesterday and bleeding over into today.  Didn't see it until now because I enjoyed a Peter Frampton concert yesterday evening, then been just lazy this morning until I saw something Darker Blue spammed into a couple of today's threads.

I'll be locking 🔐 and inspecting shortly
