Happy Festivus: It’s Time for the Airing of the Grievances

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on December 23rd, 2019 at 6:59 AM

I’ve got a lot of problems with you people, now you’re gonna hear about it!

First Grievance: When I’m trying to read a post to find pertinent information, I find it impossible because 10-12 of you bastards have went off into a tangent replying with information that relates to an 80’s cover band or whatever sandwich you had at a place in Prescott Valley, Arizona.

My grievance - the state of Detroit professional sports.

The Same Old Lions will always suck - I've moved on.

The Pistons - does Detroit still have an NBA team? I haven't noticed them since about 2007.

Tigers - had their chance and blew it. Got little or nothing when they sold off their remaining assets. C. Illitch too cheap to make them good.

Red Wings - I am most disappointed in the Red Wings. Screw you Ken Holland. As bad as they are right now (and they are really bad), the NHL does not reward tanking at all so they will need some luck to get a top 2 pick needed for a franchise player. The DRW never seem to have any luck though.

My grievances:

1. There are way too many slimeball realtors in the world. Some are great, I've heard, but most seem to lie through their teeth as easily as they breathe.

2. I'm going to pistol-whip anyone who says how great the OL is after the spring game/practice. Advanced metrics say one thing but the eye test says another. Don't believe the hype until they prove it in the fall.

3. The marching band is stale and nothing proves that more than the awful Perry Fucking Como song they play. This is a tradition that needs to disappear.

4. The media. Stop complaining that something was "overhyped," when you and your peers were responsible for said hype. When you choose to cover something, say, like a football team's trip to France, it is your choice to do so. You cannot use it as ammo against that team when it fails to win a big game. And finally, when the team you cover is good at football, it doesn't automatically mean that you are good as a journalist. These items are separate and unrelated. And yes, Finebaum, I'm looking at you.

These should be weekly until Michigan gets to a Big Ten football championship game.

All you Michigan fans who act like Michigan football dominated the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. We had some great teams. We also had some stinkers in there. Acting like we were once what Alabama or OSU or Clemson are today to fit your narrative of how this team isn't living up to your expectations is beyond naive.

I have a problem with Don Brown.  I do not have a replacement in mind or a viable solution, but I feel like he's the sports coach that makes the playoffs every year and loses in the first round.

I understand he has a preferred scheme, but if you don't have the players to run it you have to adapt.  I tortured myself by rewatching the game on B10 network, and a certain Michigan safety was in the picture on all but 1 TD either getting beat in coverage or not tackling the ball carrier.

Bowl games matter. Brian and others try and push the narrative that they don’t because Michigan always craps the bed and plays like schoolgirls. The entire Michigan athletic department is cursed. I don’t understand why teams can’t get over the hump and win national titles. 0-6 this decade when a national title is on the line. Also, doesn’t matter who the coach is Michigan is never beating OSU in football ever again.

1) I hate the academics fallback argument some Michigan fans try to shield themselves with when it comes to OSU. For one, it just comes off as petty and desperate when you retort with "yeah....well....my school is academically better than your school." That's the mark of someone who has no ammo left and is blindly throwing grenades in the hopes that he might hit something. Secondly, OSU is not a bad school. Is it as good as Michigan? On the whole, no it isn't. But its a good school in its own right, and has come a long, long way in the last 30ish years. A lot of that had to do with the money pouring in from the football team, granted, but it doesn't matter. OSU has really elevated its academic standing.

2) I have a hard time seeing Michigan beat OSU consistently, or even once at all, any time soon. They have better talent, better coaching, and they take this game far more seriously than Michigan does. I'm not talking about the fans and student body going around campus and marking off all the M's in red tape. What they do doesn't matter. I'm talking about how their football team prepares. Everything they do is in some form preparation for Michigan. I know Michigan wants this game, but they want it as bad as you can want something within the confines of it being just a game. OSU wants this because it is their way of life. Its their reason for existence. And until Michigan matches that mindset, they're going to get embarrassed every single year.

3) Michigan Football, in my mind, is beyond the point of no return. Unless some kind of major seismic shift happens in the game, or OSU moves to a different conference/shuts down its football team (you've got a better chance of the sun rising in the west and setting in the east tomorrow), who Michigan has been under Harbaugh to this point, I think is the ceiling. You're not getting past OSU, and you can't really rely on them to show up 11-0 to that game. The most I think we can hope for in any given year is 10-2 with a NY6 appearance, maybe a shot at the Rose Bowl if OSU heads for the playoffs and our schedule aligns well enough with a team like Wisconsin off the schedule. But we're not a playoff contender. Not now, and I'm not really sure ever.

1) College is what you make of it and who you are before you even set foot on any campus.

2) I agree.  The fate was sealed when Michigan stopped recruiting Ohio, which is where most/many of Michigan's best players had come from over the years.

3) Michigan has never been a consistent contender.  They've been a regional program save about 10 years of the last 50.  Even in those years they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory vs. also-ran Purdue, Minnie and Pac 10 teams.

My grievance is your point number 3.  Yes, OSU is better at football and has been for the 21st Century. They are still lucky as hell to win as much as the do against us.  College football is random; every game is a new toss of the dice.  OSU will continue to own the game until, one fine day, they don't.  They couldn't buy a win against us in the 90s, and then their luck flipped at the same time as their change to a better (and less ethical) HC with Tressel.  Remember the 70s and early 80s when the Big Ten couldn't buy a win in the Rose Bowl?  In the 90s Army owned a long win streak against Navy, then it flipped in the 00s and early 2010s, and Army flipped it back around 2015, until Navy won this year.  This streak seems like it will go on forever, and it will, until it doesn't, and then we'll wonder what all the angst was about.  Jim Leyland used to talk about losing streaks when it seems like you'll never win another ball game for the rest of the season, and then it changes for no reason...

My grievance is the same this year as in previous years. Posters who suggest a transfer is likely for a certain player (pick your sport) because the poster doesn’t think said player is up to their standards. We may all be thinking the same thing but it is extremely rude and hurtful to state it publicly.

Not every kid is interested in playing time at some other lesser university. Maybe they love Michigan, value the education they are getting and are happy playing whatever role they can to help the team.

Mine aren't really grievances, more like observations...

1. People moaning about this site and the functionality.

  • It's just not worth getting upset about.
  • Now, if you personally paid a large amount of cash for the site to work, then go ahead and bitch. My financial contribution here has been minimal.  Bought a t-shirt, donated $5 last month or the month before and remembered once to go to Amazon from the link here.  Even if I was inclined to bitch, I wouldn't given I'm not part of the solution.

2. Trolls.  I'd have more respect for a troll who identifies as a fan of another team.  Calling yourself a UofM fan then playing your troll game is just a wee bit cunty and low brow.

I like the other folks posting here (even MeanJoe07).  Some things people write are simply hilarious.  It's a fun place to visit and have fun.
