Happy Fat Tuesday

Submitted by Blue@LSU on February 21st, 2023 at 12:06 PM

One of the perks of living in Louisiana is the Mardi Gras break. So I'm at home enjoying above-normal temperatures (supposed to get near 90 on Thursday, ugh) and I have a King Cake with cream cheese and strawberry filling sitting here with my name on it.

Anyone have any special meals/dessert/celebration plans for Fat Tuesday?

Happy Mardi Gras, y'all. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

oh.... back in the '90s I had a good client based out of Bossier City... they sent me a king cake every year....   Good stuff.

On another note.... these damn grocery stores that parade jelly donuts under the guise of Paczki.... terrible!  they are not the same, not even close!!!!!

Rant over.

traditional paczki are heavier, more bready.. than pastry-like.    I'm a traditional pollack, I prefer non-filled, coated with white sugar.    I got my mom's recipe and made a batch two years ago, they were nearly 'made by busia' good, and far better than a jelly donut.   I really need to make them again!

I am looking forward to Lent, because I am giving up Monster drinks. I should have given these up on my own long ago, but this will be the kick in the pants I need; as these things are pure garbage water.

cool. now check what the #2 and #3 ingredients are (#1 is water) and see what effects those ingredients have on the heart.

EDIT: as a matter of fact, i just did a quick looksy and like 4 of the top 8 ingredients in that stuff have side effects like atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, etc.

Not a traditional paczki (we used to call them bismarck's in my house growing up), my favorite filled donut is the creme brulee donut at Doughnut Plant in New York. The top is caramelized with a torch, just like creme brulee. If you get a chance, try one.

Did my undergrad in NOLA and so very much miss being there during Carnival season. Have a homemade king cake ready for dessert tonight. As a bonus I'm rocking my Mardi Gras bow tie from Perlis (fancy NOLA clothier) and my purple socks with gold fleur de lis!

"supposed to get near 90 on Thursday, ugh". Ugh, you say? Well ...

Let's just stop for a moment and compare that with a Thursday forecast of: "highs of 31, lows near 20, breezy and colder with periods of snow and sleet, roads could be slippery". Uh. Care to retract that "ugh"?

😉

(enjoy!)

I live in MI now but pretty much lived in Baton Rouge from 2007-09, and the King Cake was one of the revelations given to me while I was down there. Many times since I've gotten an authentic one to bring into work and told the whole background behind it. Awesome. I gotta advocate for the Pecan flavor!

My first Mardi Gras ‘83 (Tulane ‘87 grad school), I had my first drink at 6:30 am prior to going downtown for the Zulu parade. Don’t remember much after that, but finished the day at Tipitinas around 2:30 am…

Had a "paczki" for breakfast (i.e. one from a well-known Michigan chain grocery store--I've had authentic ones, and as others have mentioned, there is no comparison) and then made myself scratch buttermilk pancakes for lunch. Will have to take the dog for a two mile walk this afternoon to make up for it--oh, wait, I do that every day, so we might have to go three.
