Gus Johnson appreciation thread

Watching some of the highlights today I was reminded once again how much I love the way Gus Johnson calls a ballgame. I think he really captures the excitement of CFB.

Listening to Keith Jackson for so many years, I was certain no one could ever match him. He called so many iconic moments for us - the Desmond and Woodson punt returns, the ‘98 Rose Bowl, and so many more.

I am starting to think Gus Johnson might be just as much fun to listen to. Starting with “Peoples Jones, down the sideline! Peoples Jones! Touchdown, Wolverines!!” all the way through “Corum! Watch out! Blake Corum! Blazing speed!” he has, like the legendary KJ, become a part of some of our iconic moments. Here’s to him becoming part of many more going forward.

Maaaaan! I didn't hear it on the original broadcast, but when I re-watched the game this morning, I had to rewind that about 3-4 times. That was a classic call! "Stroud, sacked AGAIN... O... Ja... BO!

On Hutchinson's 3rd sack, Gus he gave us this - "Stroud, sacked again! Aiden Hutchinson... This kid is UNREAL!"

Gus is a GEM! He brings excitement and energy. I don't know why folks think he's unnecessarily over the top. He gets loud when something exciting happens, when there's a big play.

No thanks, I'll pass.

Gus is great for College Bball broadcasts. Could really take him or leave him for football. I find him inaccurate often on whats going on, and a little too concerned on forcing moments and his schtick. Its cool if other like him, but I don't enjoy him, whether UM is winning or not.

Don't think he needs an appreciation thread, especially since he's just an announcer who works for FOX. Comparing him to Keith Jackson seems like we are riding the wave a little too high here

Yeah this is a shit take lol sorry Harm. Excessive, over the top, doesn’t know when to actually put the pedal on the floor in terms of where the games at. God the “CORUM BLAZING SPEED CAN HE DO IT?!?!?” When he was clearly not going to get in the end zone was just so stupid. He’s all hype no bite. He’s miles below Keith Jackson, Verne, Fowler, and Mussberger. Klatt is great as a color guy and honestly gives Herbie a run for his money in terms of color guys.

Great call when Haskins scored after the long Corum run.  Michigan…Pounds it … Right at Ohio State … on the ground.  Really captured the main point of what was going on in the game.

No thanks. He just screams. No actual play-by-play skills. He misses important details like obvious penalties negating whatever he's screaming about.

The broadcast was fine.  The commercials are another story and on a cold snow afternoon are painful to sit or stand through.  I'm waiting for them to direct our attention to the North end zone to honor the head librarian at the UGLi.

Can’t stand the constant shouting. Half of the time he’s shouting about something unremarkable like a 1st down run up the middle for 3 yards in the 2nd quarter of a tied game.

Johnson often mispronounces names and just yammers away on cliches and platitudes, e.g. Harbaugh’s record against OSU.

I don’t think Johnson and Klatt prepare very much for games—I didn’t hear either of them remark about Hutchinson tying his father’s single-season sack record with his first sack or tying the record with his second. The fact that Hutchinson’s 3rd sack set a new Michigan record got a brief mention. Meanwhile they were constantly updating us on Treveyon  Henderson’s OSU freshman touchdown record chase.

Wow. That ended up straying pretty far from what Gus does as a PBP guy. But hey, we just beat Ohio State and I’m not inclined to argue with fellow Michigan fans about anything on what should be a happy day for us all. I just like the way Gus calls a football game, that’s all. If you don’t, well, at least we can all be happy for a historic win

Quote of The Game from Gus:

"What...are we talking about here?!" describing the Donovan Edwards one-handed catch.

Amazing.

BTW, Scott Bell is right - what is with Fox not showing replays on big plays?! Crazy.
