Greg Mattison quote on Ryan Day: purely commentary on Day, or veiled shot at Harbaugh?

Greg Mattison: "Ryan Day is who you want to work with. You want to work with guys who have great character, that care about players more than anything, that are very, very genuine, that are not egotistical, that are worried about being the best football coach they can be."

On the surface, it seems like a nice comment about Day, but also appears to be a dig at someone. Maybe Harbaugh?

Not positive that’s the intent, but ol’ Twitter sure sees it that way.

All GMat was doing was chasing $$$.   When Harbaugh decreased his salary a couple hundred grand after his original Michigan DC contract expired, I'm sure he wasn't thrilled.   I'm also sure he didn't love getting passed over for the DC job after Durkin left and the defense played well in the Citrus Bowl under his watch.

Do you know what sycophant means? If you do, how exactly does Mattison fit the mold? He’s a multi-decade football savant that’s given his life and energy to several amazing NFL and college teams, including this one. He didn’t just start his job last week, and his actions all but speak to a truly honorable and fantastic man. His motives for leaving UM are pretty transparent and obvious, and I don’t blame him one bit. I hope he ends his illustrious career with a swan song...

I guess I don’t know why someone can’t both love Ann Arbor and choose to end their career on a high note. Objectively, remaining in A2 to be a d-line coach for a team whose trajectory is going south versus getting a promotion, doubling your salary, and playing at the highest level of the sport (in college) - frankly- seems like a really easy decision to me.

at some point, when your pity party stops, I hope you appreciate all Mattison did for this university, program, and the men that went through it. By all accounts, he’s left an indelible and lasting mark.

If he REALLY wanted to be a DC again, there are a dozen or so opportunities he could have pursued that would have been every bit as lucrative and prestigious as OSU. Hell, he could have gone back to the NFL and made even more money. But instead, he chose to give the program that considered him family the middle finger and join the program that is not only our heated rival, but that has been beating up on us for the better part of two decades.

Yeah, fuck that guy.

Cool. Can i not give a flying fuck? Is that alright with you? I didnt log on to Mgoblattison.com. I dont watch Mattison games and wear Mattison gear. I dont cheer on the Mattison and Blue. My loyalties lie with this team and this school so yep, dont give a damn about his success, because the school he chose. And also i hope his demise starts to lead to us being the better job and better team. But im weird posting that on a UM fan site. Good luck with your buckeyes in late November and your fighting Mattisons.

Yep, the compliment actually, sounds like a great description of Harbaugh. Only reason someone could read it differently is if they have no clue what Jim is actually like and have bought the Penis Finebaum caricature. Mattison doesn't fall into that group at all.

Not really sure how you can get that sentiment out of that unless you're looking for something in particular. Harbaugh is an odd guy, but he is a genuine person who cares about his players. I mean just look at what he's done since coming back to college with regards to off-the-field stuff. You can't take that away from him.

And lol @ a dude who makes millions of dollars not being egotistical. I don't believe that for a second.

Does it matter?  It's not like if Mattison is in fact hinting that JH sucks we're suddenly going to get rid of him and hire a better coach that can beat OSU.  We're just reaching for something to make us feel better.  The only thing that makes you feel better is winning or a clear path to winning.  That's not happening so none of these other story lines or confirmations will help.

That's no shot.  Mattison is an asshat that is forever dead to me, though...  But no, it doesn't read like anything anti-Harbaugh, or anti-anyone.  It's a nice comment to his boss.

Fuck Mattison.  Fuck Day.  Fuck Ohio State.

Of course that game is at night. That's where is belongs. It will get the highest ratings of all games that day. It ought to be in prime time.

If Michigan can't play in night games, and other teams can, then Michigan has to do something about it. Nothing is handed to you in life.

Mattison was effusive in his praise of Brady until the day he left. Also said this about Harbaugh...

"One thing you know is Jim's going to put together a (great) staff," Mattison said in the video. "To work alongside of him will be an honor."

You sir are stretching. My criticisms of Harbaugh might definitely be there, like, turtles up in a run it up the middle at the first sign of incomplete passes or possible interceptions, but he's nothing if not a coach who cares about the players and wants to do the right thing above all, especially above his own ego.

I don't know man. You take away the egotistical thing and that describes JH. And I don't think Mattison butted heads with JH in that way.
