Greg Mattison quote on Ryan Day: purely commentary on Day, or veiled shot at Harbaugh?
https://mobile.twitter.com/KyleRowland/status/1181610486137344000
Greg Mattison: "Ryan Day is who you want to work with. You want to work with guys who have great character, that care about players more than anything, that are very, very genuine, that are not egotistical, that are worried about being the best football coach they can be."
On the surface, it seems like a nice comment about Day, but also appears to be a dig at someone. Maybe Harbaugh?
Not positive that’s the intent, but ol’ Twitter sure sees it that way.

Mattison sounds like a sycophant- wait, correction, his actions demonstrate that he is one.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:55 PM ^
I don’t know about that. I think he wants a shot at a NC before he retires and OSU was the place for him to do that.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
He's already won an NC.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:20 PM ^
Cool, Fuck him!!
October 9th, 2019 at 8:31 AM ^
All GMat was doing was chasing $$$. When Harbaugh decreased his salary a couple hundred grand after his original Michigan DC contract expired, I'm sure he wasn't thrilled. I'm also sure he didn't love getting passed over for the DC job after Durkin left and the defense played well in the Citrus Bowl under his watch.
October 9th, 2019 at 8:47 AM ^
Why even go there? He HAD to know it would come across as a shot at Harbaugh and he said it anyways which means it was more than likely INTENDED as the shot it was
October 9th, 2019 at 10:19 AM ^
Ditto.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:11 PM ^
Do you know what sycophant means? If you do, how exactly does Mattison fit the mold? He’s a multi-decade football savant that’s given his life and energy to several amazing NFL and college teams, including this one. He didn’t just start his job last week, and his actions all but speak to a truly honorable and fantastic man. His motives for leaving UM are pretty transparent and obvious, and I don’t blame him one bit. I hope he ends his illustrious career with a swan song...
October 8th, 2019 at 10:55 PM ^
a person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain advantage
Mr. Smith - I will gladly join your hated rival team for more money after telling the team and media that I love Ann Arbor and the values of the Michigan program - and that there are things that money can’t buy.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:42 AM ^
I guess I don’t know why someone can’t both love Ann Arbor and choose to end their career on a high note. Objectively, remaining in A2 to be a d-line coach for a team whose trajectory is going south versus getting a promotion, doubling your salary, and playing at the highest level of the sport (in college) - frankly- seems like a really easy decision to me.
at some point, when your pity party stops, I hope you appreciate all Mattison did for this university, program, and the men that went through it. By all accounts, he’s left an indelible and lasting mark.
October 9th, 2019 at 8:33 AM ^
Yeah if he went to any other program I would agree with you. He didn't, he went to OSU. Fuck Greg Mattison.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:23 PM ^
If he REALLY wanted to be a DC again, there are a dozen or so opportunities he could have pursued that would have been every bit as lucrative and prestigious as OSU. Hell, he could have gone back to the NFL and made even more money. But instead, he chose to give the program that considered him family the middle finger and join the program that is not only our heated rival, but that has been beating up on us for the better part of two decades.
Yeah, fuck that guy.
October 9th, 2019 at 7:31 AM ^
Your example doesn’t jive with the definition. Lol
October 9th, 2019 at 9:19 AM ^
Jokes on you, I don't what obsequiously means.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:25 AM ^
I hope your hope gets fucked in every possible way. Good dude no debate there, but seriously you do realize what a swan song would mean?
October 9th, 2019 at 11:03 AM ^
If M can't do it, I hope Wiscy and PSU wreck his D.
October 9th, 2019 at 7:50 AM ^
hi Greg
October 9th, 2019 at 12:28 AM ^
Jesus, get some perspective. He took a better job with a more successful team.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:35 AM ^
Cool. Can i not give a flying fuck? Is that alright with you? I didnt log on to Mgoblattison.com. I dont watch Mattison games and wear Mattison gear. I dont cheer on the Mattison and Blue. My loyalties lie with this team and this school so yep, dont give a damn about his success, because the school he chose. And also i hope his demise starts to lead to us being the better job and better team. But im weird posting that on a UM fan site. Good luck with your buckeyes in late November and your fighting Mattisons.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:53 AM ^
Fuck him sideways if you want to. Just don’t be an emo bitch about it.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:58 AM ^
Keep up the good work boss. The boards need a strong force like you to lay down the law. Emo bitch, wow hear that on fortnite did ya?
October 9th, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
Cmonnn, of all the things - leave my girl Fortnite out of it!
October 9th, 2019 at 8:27 AM ^
It had to be said, and I'm glad it was TheGoolAidGuy who said it.
October 9th, 2019 at 7:18 PM ^
For someone that claims to not give a flying fuck, you really seem to actually give a flying fuck.
October 9th, 2019 at 8:37 AM ^
Ryan Day is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:49 PM ^
I don’t see a shot at Harbaugh.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:59 PM ^
Yep, the compliment actually, sounds like a great description of Harbaugh. Only reason someone could read it differently is if they have no clue what Jim is actually like and have bought the Penis Finebaum caricature. Mattison doesn't fall into that group at all.
October 9th, 2019 at 10:02 AM ^
This is Greg Mattison-speak. He speaks in platitudes about coaches, players and school wherever he is. He said the same thing about Brady Hoke pretty much at high school summer camp.
October 9th, 2019 at 2:18 PM ^
That's the way I took it. I'm sure he'd say the same things about Harbaugh because by all accounts it true of him, too. It's possible he can think highly of both.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
Not really sure how you can get that sentiment out of that unless you're looking for something in particular. Harbaugh is an odd guy, but he is a genuine person who cares about his players. I mean just look at what he's done since coming back to college with regards to off-the-field stuff. You can't take that away from him.
And lol @ a dude who makes millions of dollars not being egotistical. I don't believe that for a second.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
Huh? I don’t think that’s a shot at Harbaugh at all. SMH
October 8th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
Does it matter? It's not like if Mattison is in fact hinting that JH sucks we're suddenly going to get rid of him and hire a better coach that can beat OSU. We're just reaching for something to make us feel better. The only thing that makes you feel better is winning or a clear path to winning. That's not happening so none of these other story lines or confirmations will help.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
People love hating Harbaugh. I love him!
beat the buckeyes and their potato loving alumni
October 9th, 2019 at 9:03 AM ^
Wait a sec. Is potato loving supposed to be an insult? Because potatoes are delicious. I'm very confused.
October 9th, 2019 at 10:34 AM ^
Putin told me he sent you a bottle of Vodka...
October 8th, 2019 at 8:53 PM ^
There's a Greg Mattison in your doorknob. You better sleep with the lights on.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:53 PM ^
That's no shot. Mattison is an asshat that is forever dead to me, though... But no, it doesn't read like anything anti-Harbaugh, or anti-anyone. It's a nice comment to his boss.
Fuck Mattison. Fuck Day. Fuck Ohio State.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:12 PM ^
He was dead to me when he left M for ND in the 90s. Could have gotten his NC a lot earlier than he did.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:54 PM ^
I could be wrong, but I thought GMatt said similar things about Harbaugh a few years ago.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:00 PM ^
Yeah they all say the same things, hence "coachspeak."
October 8th, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
Edit: Posted in wrong thread.
Should stop drinking and head to bed i suppose
October 8th, 2019 at 9:00 PM ^
Of course that game is at night. That's where is belongs. It will get the highest ratings of all games that day. It ought to be in prime time.
If Michigan can't play in night games, and other teams can, then Michigan has to do something about it. Nothing is handed to you in life.
October 8th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
Mattison was effusive in his praise of Brady until the day he left. Also said this about Harbaugh...
"One thing you know is Jim's going to put together a (great) staff," Mattison said in the video. "To work alongside of him will be an honor."
October 8th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
Ok, cool. Go Blue!
October 8th, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
Great example of coach speak. Nothing more. Nothing less.
I am courageous. You are courageous. We are courageous.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:00 PM ^
This is absolutely nothing.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:01 PM ^
You sir are stretching. My criticisms of Harbaugh might definitely be there, like, turtles up in a run it up the middle at the first sign of incomplete passes or possible interceptions, but he's nothing if not a coach who cares about the players and wants to do the right thing above all, especially above his own ego.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:46 PM ^
Agreed. If JH was pure ego then he'd be throwing everyone under the bus except himself for the less than stellar play of the offense this season. There are countless other examples that JH is not egotistical but this is the most recent.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
Sounds like he’s talking about Brady Hoke. Minus the ego part
October 8th, 2019 at 9:03 PM ^
I don't know man. You take away the egotistical thing and that describes JH. And I don't think Mattison butted heads with JH in that way.
