Grade Warde Manuel's first 5 months

Interested to hear thoughts on how Warde has done so far on the job.

Since he has taken over: no night games for the foreseeable future, ND series resumed, convinced Red Berenson to come back.

I will wait at least a year before giving a grade...he hasn't even been an AD for a football season at Michigan. My first impression is I like him a whole lot better than the last guy.

I didn't see where night games have been ruled out for the forseeable future -- last I saw was this quote by WM:

“We talked about it this year as I was coming in and made the decision that this year we wouldn’t have a night game here at Michigan Stadium,” Manuel said. “I think some of our fans like them, and I’ve heard from some fans who prefer day games. But I know our fans love Michigan football, so whether it’s played in the day or played in the night, they want to see our team have success. Last year we played three (night games on the road). … I know the fans are interested in night games but that’s taxing coming back late at night for the team.

“We considered a lot before we said we wouldn’t have a night game this year. But the future there could be night games at Michigan Stadium.”

Disappointing because the could have done Nebraska in '18 and then start making the Va Tech/Washington/UCLA/Texas games at night. Would have been a nice run through our second-teir marquee rivals in '14-'16''18 in the years when we do not have our two top-teir rivals on the schedule, with night games. Nice season ticket thing. But oh well.

Not too much stands out there in terms of early season marquee matchups at home, but then there is that Michigan State game in early October...

If not MSU...Cincy? Air Force? Minnesota?

Ohio State? ;-)

scheduling any of those but MSU/ohio at night would make us look desperate. We made fun of them for a night game vs MAC team, basically the equivalent of air force/cincy. You can't force these things or it's just a meh atmosphere, defeats the purpose I would not want arkansas or va tech or notre dame at night either, if they're coming off mediocre seasons. If they were 10-2 and ranked preseason, yeah, let's do it!

Nice change from DB obviously since he isn't mugging for cameras 24 7. Overall he seems to be focusing on making few waves and supporting the needs of M coaches. I think he is one of these people that waits a year or so before putting his fingerprints on the job.

Early grade:B The night game decision came down to his decision. -C The ND series can be seen as a positive and negative, but cancelling the Arkansas series was on him. B- Letting Harbaugh run wild at camps, recruiting, events are a plus. Plenty of support. - A Outreach to Alumni and donors - B+

Giving Harbaugh (almost seemingly) complete autonomy is the reason I'm OK with him.  Getting ND back is good but all three rivalry games away in one year is gonna be really tough.

I'll never understand not having one night game a year, but won't beat the already very dead horse.  Instead, I'll just admire the lights (and the 2M spent) at noon when I'm there.

I'm bothered by the Arkansas cancellation. Getting any SEC team to cross the Mason-Dixon line is a massive accomplishment, and I felt it was a stepping stone to more of these agreements. Furthermore, I cannot even begin to understand why we gave up a home game to go on the road, and paid $2 million to do so.

It wasn't an either or proposition especially since Michigan still needs another opponent for 2019.  Yes this increases the odds of getting a 7th home game for 2019 but it will likely be a directional school.  I don't know about you, but I'd rather see Michigan play six home games which includes a road game against Arkansas than seven homes games one of which will now include the likes of EMU.

As would I, but Florida is not leaving the South anytime soon. I'm not saying I agree with it, but they're not. I'm of the mindset that anytime we have the opportunity to play an SEC team outside of SEC territory we do so. Hopefully in time that will make the Florida's of the world consider leaving the South also.

florida hasn't gone on the road outside the state since 1980s. You want them to schedule them, gotta be one off. Same with alabama under saban LSU is realistic, having played at syracuse last year, except i'm not sure everyone is over the les miles non hire? Never know with egos in this business. Georgia or A&M for sure, playing ND H/H soon. TN probably too The rest are meh to me. But i think the important point is that so long as ND is on the schedule we will NEVER play other H/H against P5 teams. Not because we can't, but choose not to. The past 15 years proves this

Other than that, the scheduling of these games is bizarre.  Us starting the season at ND does not typically go well.  I don't think we won a road opener at ND since Lou Holtz first season.

Then playing the 2019 game in the middle of the conference season doesn't make sense.  Looking at the 2019 B1G schedule, I'm blown away that we would've had three straight road games (obviously done during the DB reign).  But in the middle of that, we now have ND.

The only reasonable thought I can find for these decisions is that in the event of losing those games, the CFP committee will like us playing a tough road game to start the 2018 season and in 2019, and we'll still have @MSU and @OSU on the schedule to recover from a midseason loss at home to ND.

I'm excited to have start the season with ND and also have an interesting mid-October matchup with them.  My concerns lie with making the CFP.

Michigan used to play Notre Dame in October and November, though the last time that happened was 1943.  Every game prior to 1978 was played in either October or November, every game since the resumption in 1978 has been played in September.

C

Not having a night game and he got fleeced for ND. I'm also very annoyed they got rid of Arkansas when they had open dates or could have got rid of SMU or something instead.

The only reason not a D is because he let Harbaugh do the entire month of camps. I'm sure it was quite expensive. A+ for that. It's an investment and it will pay dividends. Already has.
