Convinced Gattis got ranked by Harbaugh when adversity hit. Nothing else explains the sudden dinosaur nonsense we saw in the 2nd half.

Talk about a way to compound a problem. The offense should solve their issues with aggression. Take a page out of the Brown playbook.

If you think Harbaugh doesn't have final call on all offensive plays you are crazy and naive in my opinion. No way Jim Harbaugh is letting A young former Wake Forrest DB call plays for his Michigan team. I believe Gattis has heavy input and makes suggestions.

What is it that people don't understand?

It's very likely things are deliberately held back to save for the regular season...sure, it got away from them, and they didn't execute well vs a very disciplined Army team, and the playcalling was influenced by Shea's injury.

If you see the same shit vs Wisconsin then I'll admit my error.   But I have to think the best here.

Why does it seem like our wide receivers can’t get open anyway when we do pass?  I still get the unsettling feeling when I see our offense line up that the play is not going to work.  The play looks doomed at the snap.  Still, with a new OC, our offense continues to look structurally deficient.  All over the country teams are going bonkers on offense with less talent.  Getting a first down against Army looked like a nearly impossible task for us.  I just don’t get it.

This is my question as well. Every play Michigan runs looks really difficult and seems to take forever. I refuse to believe that on any given play against Army’s D backs, Nico, Black, or Bell weren’t open on a short route for 5 or 6 yards.

I don’t understand it either.  Every year it’s the same thing.  Why couldn’t UM take advantage of their bigger receivers against smaller Army  DBs?   Are the UM receivers overrated?   The entire game UM’s receivers were blanketed by Army DBs.

I agree.

Not counting the end of the half drive, 3 out of 4 drives ended in turnovers. 75% of offensive drives ended in fumbles. And we’re only down 14-7.

I think Harbaugh made the decision at half we were not going to lose this game because the offense continued to screw up and turn the ball over. This game was going to be ugly and won with Don Browns defense in the second half, and the offense’s job was to not make things hard on the defense.

I'm inclined to think that's the case, but we threw it 3 straight times to start 2nd OT. I don't think Harbaugh would have done that to be honest. I can't explain why Gattis would call runs up the middle on 4th downs when they weren't working, but I also can't explain why Harbaugh would supposedly call 3 straight passes.

Those 3 straight times were all incomplete.

When we mixed in runs in the 1st OT we scored a TD.

Shea was off his game.  The blitzing from all different directions all day gave him the yips.

This is going to be a problem all year.  Teams are going to blitz us like crazy if we don't come up with some quick-release blitz busters that our QB's can execute reliably under pressure.

The part that drove me nuts was when it was 3rd and 2 and the Army DBs were giving a 10 yd cushion to the slot WR. Take the damn free yards and get a first down.  Instead we ran the same inside zone that had already failed 15 times in this game and shockingly failed again.

Show of hands, who was at all surprised that Harbaugh retreated to his personal comfort zone, being the play calling OC, at the first sign of adversity?

Harbaugh may not have been technically calling the plays, but I can imagine conversations with Gattis offering up a play, Harbaugh saying he doesn't feel it.  Gatiss offers an alternative play, Harbaugh says, nah, give us something else.  Gattis then says give the ball to Charbonnet and let him bull through the line.  Harbaugh says, now that's a plan, let's go with that.

Yep.  He sounds as frustrated as the fan base.

It’s not an RPO if the QB has no option to run!

It’s not an RPO if the QB has no option to pass!

Reminds me of a tennis player in no-Man’s-land; either you play baseline, or go to the net. We’re trying to win with half volleys at the edge of the service box.

Add on the fact that shea is missing open receivers, and (assuming it’s not injury driven), definitely time for a QB Change where at least you have the dual option of RB run or QB run, and that may indeed open up the passing game.

Clemson switched QB’s last year mid-season, maybe time for Jim to sack up and make the change.

This offense is the exact same as last years from the gun. Still two TE’s 2 WR.  Nothing’s changed. The first FUMBLE Ryan Hayes completely dwarfed on picking up a dude who was running for a solid 3 seconds before he hit the LOS. Patterson needs to hold on to the ball but damn.

STOP PLAYING SERVICE ACADEMIES.

But if Shea is hurt, why is he playing?

Either:

  • An injured Patterson is better prepared than the backup McCaffrey, or
  • Harbaugh has some reason to keep McCaffrey out which is not related to McCaffrey's ability to play football

If it's the first, then shame on the coaching staff for not having an adequately prepared backup QB.

If it's the latter, then it means Harbaugh is using criteria other than the best 11 men on the field, and that's a very bad sign as well.

If you don't give a QB playing time or hope to play, he's going into the transfer portal - plain and simple. Perfect example: OSU. Everyone of their QBs on the roster were transfers. Don't want to see that happen to us. QB depth is a concerning issue going forward with ALL CF rosters.

I'm with you.  I'm all about giving your starter every chance to establish himself, but there was a point that this reasoning no longer made sense.  I believe Harbaugh should have brought out McCaffery to start the second half, and given him the entire half barring something truly unexpected.

Klatt is one of the best in the business.  I agree with Catchafire that Patterson must be injured.  It was plain to see that they were not going to let him option to run the ball even he could have picked up huge chunks of yards because Army realized he wasn't going to run.

I rewatched every offensive snap.

I agree. It’s clear Patterson is injured in the rib/oblique area. It’s why he’s likely being TOLD but to keep the ball (foregoing all those yards both MTSU & Army were giving him). It also explains the inaccuracy in some of the passes, usually later in games (maybe soreness sets in by then).

Some of the stuff will be fixed once Runyan (pass protection) & DPJ (those routes where Bell was *just* a tad slower than the 3 amigos) return.

Some may never be fixed (Shea waiting too long to  confirm the WRs get open in zone defenses).

Much of the call security & turnover stuff will get fixed too. It isn’t Shea throwing bad picks.

Going turtle at the end of the game also would make sense GENERALLY against Army to preserve defense (they were gassed at the end of the game) and because Army cant run a 2-3 minute drill, IF WE WERE AHEAD.

What I’m still baffled by is—once it was still a dogfight in the 4th, why not risk Shea injury & have him scamper for a score or two? Or at least have McCaffrey (who we all know is capable of pulling & running) do it?

Bottom line is, after a rewatch, it’s not nearly as bad as I felt during the game if you assume the TO/sloppy play gets cleaned up & you assume the strategy was to get Shea to the bye week to be fully healthy by Wisconsin.

What still freaks me out is the apparent willingness of the coaching staff to STICK with that plan once we were still behind in  the 4th quarter.

The only reasonable thing I can think of is this:

In the grand scheme of things, they were willing to lose to Army because it’s a non conference/non rival team & Army will likely end up being ranked at the end if the year. They felt that keeping Shea & McCaffrey healthy by having them NOT pull the ball was more important to boost their ability to win the Big Ten, beat MSU/OSU/PSU/ND, than it was to risk losing one to a more serious injury just to beat Army.

At this point I’d take Milton..at least he can run. Shea can’t pass and Dylan looks like he’s regressed throwing the ball, we don’t know if Milton can pass but we know he can run.
