General Sports and Holiday Discussion Thread

Submitted by goblu330 on December 18th, 2023 at 11:12 AM

It is a very slow day on the blog, and just a slow day, period.  We have arrived at the week of last minute shopping, awkward Christmas parties, and awful bowl games.

What sports and sports topics are holding your interest right now?  I have a couple of things on my radar.  Obviously it is an exciting time for the Lions.  Quite a return to form on Saturday.  But, wow, what to make of the Pistons?  Whatever is going on seems really serious.  To describe the word "collapse" does not suffice.  It seems to be a franchise on absolute life support.  The players are not even acting like they are trying anymore.  I feel like Gores has to sell the franchise or I'm not sure how much longer there is going to be one.

Other things of note?  Interesting holiday tidbits?  What are you watching... ?

Golfed on Friday.  Christmas golf is interesting.  Clearly played terrible and pulled an abdominal muscle I think but it was golf... kind of.

Saw Wonka with the kid yesterday.  Not terrible.  Mindless and fun.  Bring or buy chocolate to/at the theater because you will definitely want some.

Anyway, happy almost holidays and hopefully a good catchall thread for a slow day.

OP, if you're anywhere near SE Michigan, congratulations for getting out there and golfing in December, and best wishes for a speedy musculoskeletal recovery. It might pay dividends later if you go early spring golfing. (You'll be closer to your last outing and maybe more in the groove.)

The only golfers I appreciate are those willing to golf in the snow.

Nothing personal but golf seems like a big waste of space that could be dedicated to something more practical.

That being said I'm probably missing out on that once in a lifetime high of actually playing it well.

Call me an oldster, but I am not a fan of sporting events on December 25th.  Can't we go 1 day without televised sports?  Not just for the fans but for the players and their families.

I completely get this sentiment. However, the reality is that for many people (including many who celebrate Christmas) by mid day, there isn’t much to do. Everything is closed and you are stuck home. Having some good sports to watch, give his families something to do. Ultimately, I guess ratings, will determine if this trend continues

When I lived in NYC my friend and I used to drive to AC on Christmas morning.  The casinos were packed with Jews and Asians. (We're Jewish. )  Around 4 pm the Gentiles started pouring in.  It felt like most of them were just waiting for the minute they could bolt the house for the casino without incurring the wrath of the spouse.

Besides waiting on JAN 1

Some hate watching for sure.

As I live in KC many of the 25-40 crowd wants to anoint Patrick Mahomes as the GOAT after going 2 out of 3 in his first 5 NFL seasons.  I watched this in the 90's with Tiger Woods before he was even close to Jack "GOLDEN BEAR" Nicklaus.  Time was the enemy of Tiger as the pressure overwhelmed (as well as the torque on his body) and he fell short.  Tom Brady is the GOAT not very excited to see the locals forget so soon.

As a BEARS fan not very excited to see this mediocre Lions team in a crappy division act like they won a playoff game.  Would be very nice to watch the Lions get drubbed out of the first round and lament that until Goff is replaced they are what we thought they were.

Great movie:

This past Saturday was the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, so that's cool.

If you have lots of Christmas parties to go to this week (work, family, whatevs), you might want to stock up on this to help with all the indigestion that's sure to come:

The movie offerings are very lame this year. We were going to go see a movie the other night and could not find one that's interesting. Might go see the Chicken Run sequel because the first one was spectacular.

However I'm super excited to see "The Boys in the Boat" next week. Inspirational sports movie, set in the the Depression, George Clooney directing. The book was fantastic. No Oscar buzz but these days that's probably an affirmation.

Honestly, I'm happy to use this time as a dead-period for sports.  It's been a long football season, with high highs and low lows.  The same is true regarding my soccer team (go Newcastle!), not to mention my own kids' sports.  Even the Lions and Red Wings are demanding attention.  Some down time before the Rose Bowl is just what the doctor ordered.

We missed at the end of last week that the outside investigation into the MSU leak making Brenda Tracy's name public has concluded.

The Det News (and WILX and WKAR and that's it from what I can tell) reported the following:

The Michigan State University board did not leak the name of a prominent sexual assault survivor in the case involving former football coach Mel Tucker, and an outside firm's investigation will demonstrate that soon, board Chair Rema Vassar said Friday.

The State News interestingly only says that Vassar (per Vassar) has been exonerated.

Both stories note that the findings will be put into a written report that will be made publicly available...some day.

What no one has bothered saying in either article is if the investigators actually concluded how the leak occurred.

And if you need a refresher, I did document a timeline way back in the diaries. The main takeaways from that (in light of this "news"):

  • No one ever actually accused the board of being the source of the leak. At most, Tracy's lawyer accused "someone associated with the board" (what that means is unknown, but does not necessarily mean a board member) as the source of the leak. And she made that accusation in an unreleased draft statement, so that particular accusation was never actually made.
  • No one ever actually accused anyone from MSU (let alone a board member) as being the source of the leak. However, Tracy, her lawyer, and USA Today go to great lengths to make you believe the source of the leak came from MSU.

Yeah, I guess it never elevated itself above "fine" though I don't really think it tried to.  Not sure what that says.  However, one thing that I like about the Wonka movies is the theme of "pure imagination."  One thing I can say for it is that for its entire run time I was in that world and not this one, and there was absolutely no overlap.

I did not read the comments to below:

Why isn't there a game recap on the front page?

about Saturday's EMU men's hoop contest.

and did not want to start a new thread on my reaction.

It sort of fits your topic in that it is a time off work, with family, for most of us.

Oddly enough, Brian, Seth, Alex, David, also have families,

In the spirit of the season, let us all not post stuff complaining about the MGo writers content posting - or lack thereof.

Back to the topic. Attended my fabulous (large Irish Catholic) family gathering Saturday Taking 93 year-old mom, who lives across the street, to youngest (of 7) sister's for Christmas Eve.  On December 25, headed to Kentucky to stay with Daughter #2 before Rose Bowl round trip.

I am blessed beyond measure.

Attended the awards ceremony last night.  All the MV/best-whatever category winners stated it was really a team award.

I LOVE THIS TEAM!

Team #144 and the MGo staff and community rank high on my blessings list.

Happy holidays to all.

Heading back to TC Wednesday to pick up daughter from Seattle flight into there and two days for her to see our new place and then we come back down state for xmas with us four and also my 87 year old Dad who we bring over xmas day to the house for a crackling fire and a meal with company.

Bowl games on a new 77 in OLED with sound bar. Super excited. Never had anything nice like that. Daughter catches up with friends and then taking her off to Metro for her flight on the 27th back to Seattle.

Back to TC for us then on New Years weekend and family up there coming over to see the new place on 31st. Good food and treats. The wife has been manic but thank god for her. With her it's a home. With me it's a house.

I haven't done it in a long time, but I would frequently go night skiing Christmas Eve at a local ski hill within an hour or two of wherever I lived at the time. My theory was that I'd probably have the slopes to myself with no kids around, I was probably going opposite the flow of traffic to and from, and I'd be back home in plenty of time for Santa's arrival. Other than one time at Alpine Valley Wisconsin (yeah, I know, where SRV died in the helicopter crash) when the wind chill was  about -15, it always turned out great. Thinking about doing it again... what's open in Michigan now?

Here's the latest conditions

https://www.skimichigan.org/

Besides what's listed here, most ski areas have been able to make snow since the start of the week because overnight temps have been favorable. Unfortunately, though, things are likely to deteriorate over the weekend because of rain and temps well in the upper 40s- mid 50's.

Good luck and enjoy your skiing!
