Gary still with a bum shoulder, per Ian Rapoport

Submitted by Larry Appleton on April 23rd, 2019 at 9:51 AM

LINK.

A labrum tear that happened during the season.  Apparently, the goal will be to put off surgery until after the 2019 season.

This may cause a drop in his draft stock, but could wind up being a gift for a playoff team in the latter part of the first round who can take the risk and maybe have him go easy his rookie year.

Why is this like the hardest shoulder injury of all time to recover from?  If I am not mistaken he had some version of the same injury for the 2017 season as well didn't he?  Not questioning his work to fix and heal it, it just seems like it is an issue for longer than one would expect.

It still has one very limited purpose.  If I am meeting a friend literally for the sole purpose of wings and beer for a limited period of time with some kind of sports on in the background.  The last time I went to B-Dubs was for the Michigan v. Purdue basketball game in the afternoon this last season.  Two hours, in and out, no distractions or surprises, parmesan garlic and a couple of tall beers.  Very simply - a fast-food bar.  Certainly not the best option, but it gets that done.

But like "eating" there or going there for any reason other than the specific circumstances above, not a chance.

Love it, I'm similarly snarky with friends (many of whom are Buckeye fans) in that whenever we pass an Applebee's I yell "O-H".  Doesn't matter if it's in Akron or Times Square, you'll invariably get an "I-O" shouted right back.  Likely works to equal effect at B-dubs or Olive Garden.

Labrum tears never heal on their own. The only way to repair it is through surgery. While easy, expect to be out at least 6 months..although likely a year with rehab, etc.

It's why players try playing with them if they can endure the pain. I had one, but never got surgery. During the first few months of the injury, opening a door or putting on a jacket hurt. The pain went away as scar tissue formed. However, I am sure if I was playing sports or lifting weights, it would flare up immediately.

Me three!   Huge respect for Rashan playing with that injury.  Been walking around with mine for about 8 years.   Thinking I should get the surgery, because the upper half of me is turning to disgusting mush.  Any resistance work with my arms is very painful.  Bench pressing?   Impossible.  Anything where my arms are over my head is especially excruciating.   Has anybody had a repair and is willing to share how everything turned out, after all the therapy, etc.?

Every scout and mock draft have, Nick Bosa, Ed Oliver, Quinnen Williams, Josh Allen, Montez Sweat, and Devin White going before him. If you add Devin Bush who is shooting up everyone's draft board (Louis Reddick thinks he the best player available) that doesn't leave a ton of spots.

Finding out he scored at illiterate level on the Wonderlic is stunning. It will hurt him in the draft, and may explain why he never developed a repertoire of Defensive End moves beyond the Bull Rush.

I think you're overestimating his stock. The lack of production (for someone rated as highly as he was) and the injury history are really hurting him. Really the main thing he's got going for him right now is his pure athletic potential.

Now of course there's no way in hell he slips out of the first round. Someone will draft him in the first round based on his potential alone. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him fall out of the top-10 and go more towards the 15-20 range. May even be in his best interest to fall a little bit further in the first round and have a playoff contender pick him up. Someone who can insert him into games as a rotational guy next Fall and bring him along slowly, but they don't need him as a starter logging an inordinate amount of snaps on a bum shoulder.

Was anything ever released on what issue he had with his shoulder? Don't remember that ever being discussed in any official release...

well that explains the wunderlic test, too.  couldn't move the pencil.

seriously, i thought he took care of the shoulder already.  i bet that bench press test was a lot like painful.  ouch.

Unpopular opinion but if I’m a fan of a team in the top 20 I wouldn’t want my GM to pick him. Too many red flags, not enough production in college and he seems to have lots of other off field interests. I hope he just takes the time off he needs to get surgery and completely healed up.

He certainly does not appear to be a "slam dunk" draft pick.  His physical attributes would certainly make it hard to pass him up but I don't think you draft him without at least some pause.  I would "define" Gary as a "Physically gifted edge lineman who could also rotate into the interior.   Possessing a high motor, impressive strength, and good instincts but a lack of pass-rushing explosiveness and a hard to time staying on the field due to lingering injury issues."

That says first round, I am not sure it says Top 10.

Because he doesn't want to give his money away to an agent? This is something he went to school to study and try to build and develop so he could prepare himself for life after football...

I swear to God if Gary was an All-American who led us to the CFB playoff that people's outlook on him would be so much different.

Between Gary and Peppers, you all are the fucking worst.

Let the man live his life...plenty of people start their own businesses. As soon as he gets a signing bonus he can pay someone to run his company if his work/work/life balance is so damn bad.

Cart before the horse, lol...if he had a national championship ring you all would be talking about "The Michigan Difference." #FACTS

This kind of response is so over the top.  If I were the owner of an NFL team, I would want to know whether a player is more interested in the business side of sports than he is in actually playing the game.  It might be nothing, but it might be something.  It is certainly a question that I would want to ask before I invested first round money in him.

Simply put, it is unusual for a player to create a sports marketing company before every playing a down in professional sports.  It is also not particularly uncommon anymore for football players, even good ones with bright futures, to decide that the physical toll of the game is not worth it to them and go a different direction.  Would it be so crazy for an NFL team to want to pry a little bit deeper into the kid's aspirations in the game before drafting him?

Nobody is hating on the kid, that is outrage for the sake of outrage.  It is simply a discussion.

That's right. I liked Rashan and was glad he played for Michigan. I was just saying that the whole logo/agency/self-marketing thing had a bad look to it (to me), especially since many people felt he didn't play to his potential.

A big distraction, how? Please enlighten the board?

How is starting your own sports agency a bigger distraction than doing almost anything else with his time? From weed, to commercials, to social media, to public appearances and building his brand...why is THIS the distraction?

It's out of the norm. It's a risk. It's a challenge. It's not a distraction.

northernmich

It is a distraction whether you want to admit it or not. And lots of other players have outside interests too, but maybe after establishing himself after a few years and proving to his team and people paying him lots of money that he was worth the investment is also pretty important. If he flops in the NFL (I truly hope he doesn’t) not many aspiring pro athletes want to be represented by someone who didn’t pan out in the NFL.

Why should the burden of proof be on him?

He says it's not a distraction, others say it is - you are "not saying it is or is not a distraction".

Usually, the burden of proof would fall on the person making the claim (i.e. that it is a distraction)

I drafted my post before northernmich took it a step further and said it was a distraction.  Nobody on here knows if it is a distraction, I only said that I would guess that NFL teams have inquired about it.  If he says it is not a distraction, I just want to know what he is relying on to support that.
