Also in WR recruiting: Michigan just hosted Roman Wilson, a 4 star WR out of Honolulu, HI. His parents are both from Michigan and are huge Michigan fans so that's the connection driving his interest for Michigan. He is 6'0, 175 and ran a 4.37 40 at regional opening camp.

Speed in space.   I love it.  When RR was at UM it was the spread and everyone hated it.  Now Harbaugh calls it speed in space and everyone is onboard with it.

Fast covers up a lot of technical errors. You know, the sort of errors that college football players make.

You can teach solid technique. You can't teach fast. I'm not going to dump on this kid, but it's pure stupidity to demean someone for pointing out that faster is better, all else equal.

Of course you’re right, but “all else equal” is never the case. Are you saying you wouldn’t offer Mario Manningham a scholarship?

Can we also remember that a kid can get faster after he’s 17?  Not every kid who runs a 4.4 at the combine was doing that as a HS junior.

What did I say to suggest that "I" wouldn't offer Mario Manningham a scholarship? A scholarship to what, I don't know.

Given this kid's dad was a NFL WR, one could assume that he's more polished than average in his technique. The fact that he's still not a high level prospect suggests that he has limited upside. Does that mean he's not going to be good? No. Is it a predictor of future success? Definitely not.

Remember Denard? He was an extremely technically limited QB who did a great job for Michigan... because he was fast. Fast makes up for a lot of technical deficits.

Jerry himself would probably be a generic 3-star by today's standards.  Meh speed, size, etc.  He would still probably go to MVSU.  He was WR version of Tom Brady of his day . . . nothing suggested he's be the GOAT.  Some extremely rare guys just have it at game time, and especially big game time.  He also had the luxury of being on the receiving end from 2 of the best QBs ever, one of whom (Montana) fits in that same Rice/Brady mold.

Cool story bro time.  My office building in Phoenix had a little snack/breakfast/lunch place on the first floor.  One morning in ‘06 I found myself in line behind Jerry Rice and I didn’t say a word to him.  I had a poster of the guy on my wall in high school.  Anyway, found out later that his attorney practiced in the same building and pieced it together that he was probably preparing for his divorce.  Glad I didn’t bug him.

This is intriguing. I teach at Mississippi State. Jerry grew up about 15 minutes East of here. He comes to town at least a couple of times a year to golf at Old Waverly and visit with family. I have a friend who is part of his regular foursome. Somehow, I have never managed to meet him. I don't know the backstory of his college recruitment but he must not have been highly regarded in high school for the SEC schools to miss out on him.
