Frustration level with “spring game” & lack of fan interaction?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on April 12th, 2019 at 8:51 AM

I’ve seen a lot of people voicing their grievances about tomorrow’s “spring game” and the fact that there’s no tailgating allowed, no TV coverage except a $20 stream to watch a practice that’s not even a spring game

Does this bother you? Are you frustrated with the lack of fan appreciation/interaction shown by the program?

I just want to take the temperature of the fanbase right now.

I don't care but does anyone have a feel for WTF is actually going on with the coverage?   BTN ratings for Michigan players lifting weights would be better than they get for an actual game for half the league.

I don't understand them not covering the game even on tape delay unless Michigan is blocking them to test out the streaming thing.

If I lived in Ann Arbor and wanted to attend I might care, but I don’t. Even when the spring games were televised I’d hardly ever watch them. Usually would just catch the YouTube highlights the next day.

The team doesn’t owe me anything, or any of us fans. So however they want to handle this is their business.

No sour grapes here. There was never any information to really glean from the "spring game". I'd happily be proven wrong if anyone can tell me the last time we learned something significant from the spring game....? If people want to be frustrated by that, you are welcome to your feelings. I just don't see the point in being butthurt about it. I just want to see them play in Indy and make the CFP, that is all I care about.

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but this is the first year I am not counting down the days until the football season.  I don't come here much anymore, don't follow recruiting, only broadly know of the changes in position coaching.

Somehow, after all these years of losing to OSU, last year did something.  I don't mean to be a downer, and I'm not upset or anything.  I just don't have that burning excitement to see another season of college football that I have had every year since I was a kid.  I guess you get kicked in the nuts too many times, and you'll start to be a little more guarded.  I'll be watching this fall and cheering for them, but I am not all-in like I have been for the better part of 3 decades.

So if I am not as enthused about the actual season, I could not care less about a spring game.  Unless they start scrimmaging another team in a friendly like soccer, it will probably stay uninteresting.

I'm still excited for the college football season in general, and am excited for Michigan to play again.  The game is fun to watch. But I have zero expectations about this program making the playoffs. Or beating OSU.

After last year's edition of the OSU game, I just can't envision us beating them again until I physically see happen. I don't care if OSU comes in 0-11 and we're 11-0. OSU has been living in Michigan's head, rent-free, since the day Jim Tressel walked onto OSU's campus. I don't know how else to explain that OSU played like shit all year and barely scraped by mediocre teams, we got better almost every week, and then we get into Columbus and it was as if the previous 11 weeks for both teams were a mirage. OSU's awful defense was ferocious and living in our backfield. Our defense, which was arguably the best I'd ever seen at Michigan last year, I don't think even touched Haskins all day. The guy could've set up some lawn chairs in the backfield, invited his family over for a BBQ, grilled out, cleaned up, and still would've had enough time to go through all of his reads and throw downfield for a TD.

I've said this a few times in other threads, but I believe it down to my bones: OSU has a massive psychological advantage every time it plays Michigan. They don't just come into that game believing they can win. They know they will win. It's a foregone conclusion. They know that no matter what the score says at any one point in the game, when it reads all zeroes at the end of the fourth, they will have more points. And that carries them to victory just as much as their crop of five star athletes does.

Hard to get truly excited about your season when you know how its going to end.

I understand the frustration of folks who want to see in A2 what they do at OSU, Nebraska, Bama, etc. For me, though, I just don't really care that much these days about the spring game or whether it's an actual game or just stretching and punting practice. For the first time in 13 years I won't have season tickets and I expect my fandom to wane just a tad as I won't be in attendance for every home game. Life changes happen that restructure your priorities and you adjust to those new realities. It is what it is.

I personally do not care at all about the level of fan interaction as it pertains to events like a Fan Day or Selfie Day or whatever. If those events happen, that's great. If they don't, meh.

I'm fine with it. They've had some coaching staff changes and are in the midst of making some changes in their philosophy. I would rather them keep that secret and continue to hone in on it than be able to watch them showcase it in a meaningless scrimmage 5 months before the season begins.

The team is too injured to actually put a game on this year.

The University is doing everything it can to discourage people from coming because they can't give us more than a practice.

I'm entirely unaffected.

I guess I'll take the contrary opinion vs most of the responses so far.

Does the team owe me anything?  Nope.  Can they do whatever they'd like?  Of course.

But living in Austin, I'll definitely miss the opportunity to see them play a televised spring game, especially as the various networks start showing all the other spring games.

I never read too much into it, but I enjoy seeing some of players that didn't start or get much pt last year - and it would have been interesting to see any new wrinkles on offense and defense, especially with the coaching changes.

Most of all it's just a long time until fall football starts and it's nice to get a little taste of Michigan football to hold me over.

So I'm not really frustrated or bitter about it, but all things being equal I'd definitely rather they had one.

Cheers.

Yes, the football program is completely out of touch right now. Fact is they have the ability to do something fun for people like OSU does every year. They've done it before...they had locker room tours once and even in 2016 the parking lots were packed with people before the spring game. But even those years it was like they didn't put the word out until the week before. They could market it weeks in advance, charge $5 a person to get in, and donate that to Mott.

Now it's like they've stopped giving a shit all together, no real spring game, no fan day, no women's football academy, oh but we're upping ticket prices this Fall by the way!

I'm not too upset because I live out of state now and couldn't make the game but when I was a kid (mid 90s) the spring game was fun because you could go on to the field and get autographs from the players after. It really was a special event. Now it almost seems like we're getting the finger from the AD.

I'd like to see a televised Maize-vs-Blue spring game because it's a fun glimpse of the upcoming season, but it doesn't actually affect what happens in the fall in any way so it's not a big deal.

I'm over these spring practices.

1. Not actually a game and super vanilla even when it is.

2. A lot of meaningless hype when a guy makes a decent meaningless play.

3. Injuries limit the participation.

Other than that, it looks like its going to be a great day weather wise.

I'll be fishing.

Everyone is excited about Katie Bouman's black hole picture. How many people are pissed that they didn't get to watch her write her dissertation? We talkin' 'bout practice!

Guess I’ll be in the minority but the whole thing just epitomizes why we’re not being as successful on the recruiting trail as we’d like to be.  Spring Games are for the fans and to generate excitement for potential ‘croots.  Ohio State never misses a beat when it come to creating buzz and excitement for their program.  Penn State has also recently stepped their game up in that regard.  We seem to be doing whatever we can to dampen any enthusiasm for the team and the season.

This alone won’t help us over the Ohio State hump, but when you add up a lot of these opportunities together, it makes a difference.  And what’s worse is Harbaugh did all the right things initially (like signing of the stars and such) his first few years, and our recruiting reflected that.  I know we’re still top 15-ish on a regular basis, but to beat Ohio State, we have to average top 5, or hell top 2-3.

Did you actually read my comment or just post something snarky to show how much you don't care?

I think his point is that having a no atmosphere spring game is an example of the huge cultural difference between the UM and OSU football programs. OSU has a clear cultural edge over us in football and that seeps into many aspects of their success, including attracting more elite recruits.

The Homie J

April 12th, 2019 at 12:44 PM ^

Thank you, that was exactly my point.  The culture around a program is a big part of a recruit's decision.  And having grown up smack dab in Ohio State territory most of my life, they have such a ridiculous advantage there.  That city/state lives and breathes for their football program.  And their Spring Game is just one small portion of that.  Penn State is quickly catching up to them in that regard.  As much as we rag on Frames Janklin, he's a savvy marketer, and it shows in their ability to attract 5 star 'croots despite not having the history or prestige that Michigan or Ohio State has.

Another example is the home field advantage, Ohio State and Penn State has some of the best home field crowds in terms of noise and atmosphere during gameday.  Our crowd is large, but due to the older portion of the fanbase and lack of a noise-trapping element like an upper deck or overhang, we simply aren't that intimidating a place to play.  All of that factors into a recruit's mindset.

Used to take the kids to the Spring game, in part to watch the lacrosse game afterwards and hang out in AA.  Then they became cool high school kids and didn't want to do that anymore because it took the whole day and that's one less day of hanging with friends.  Now they're college kids, think the spring game sucks, but love going to real games.  Long story short, idgaf

No. I don't care about the Spring Game.

I've gone to plenty. I've taken my son. It's nice to see the players and see them run plays I guess. But it's practice. There are no stakes. I don't care what happens. Any play worth celebrating is simultaneously worthy of scorn for the other side of the ball. In general, the event bores me to tears and I wouldn't care if they never held another one.

I could care less.  Let them practice in pads or tutu’s.  I want to see wins during the regular season.  I want the real thing and not a facsimile thereof.

Apathetic.

The spring game has never been a big deal to me, the only time I attended was 2015.

That said, it's a missed opportunity for the program.  You only get so many chances to connect with the fanbase.  It's a chance for people, especially locals, to see the team live at a modest cost.  For kids to develop their fandom.  For recruits to see a great atmosphere.

The lack of coverage is a bit annoying, but it isn't like when NBC cancelled "Quantum Leap", something for which I still haven't fully forgiven the network. Other than that, whatever.
