Friday Night BBQ, Beverage, and Football Thread

Mates,

We haven't had one of these in a while because we've been spoiled by football.  But take heart, there is still football to be played even before the bowl games start in 10 days.  Tonight you have an FCS playoff game, and tomorrow not only do you have more of those, but you also have Army v. Navy at 3;00.  Love that game and love the end of the game when each team serenades their fans with the opposing team respectfully circled behind them.  That's such a cool tradition.

Montana is a 14 1/2 pt favorite over Furman tonight.

Army is a  3 pt favorite over Navy.  Both teams are 5-6.

So what's in your cup, what is (or was) on your grill?   Who you got tomorrow in Army v. Navy?

Our game is 23 days away, but we can enjoy some football until then.  Have a great weekend.

Go Army!  (As I recall was yours too, my dad was USAAF in WWII).

In Austin for a long weekend, so Stubbs tomorrow sometime for BBQ, and local beer.

My dad was a B-24 waist gunner.  He told me from the time I was 4 years old that I wouldn’t be here were it not for the Mustangs.  His closest call came on one of the last missions of the European war, when their P-51 escorts engaged ME-262 jets in a ferocious dogfight over Kiel.  My dad’s plane eventually lost all 4 engines though they did make it over the Channel to safety.

Not sure how much your dad heard “thank you,” but from my dad and his crew it was heartfelt and true.  8th AF had the worst attrition of the war.

So go Army, dammit!

Dad and his best friend went to flight school together.  His friend was a great athlete, a guy’s guy if there ever was one.  He got B-24’s when dad got P-51’s.  He used to complain (with a smile on his face) “your dad got P-51’s and i was a damn truck driver!”

Father-in-law was a chief mechanic for P38s in the Pacific theatre. He was initially reluctant to open up to me about his experiences, but we eventually found common topics talking about keeping big engines running. His opinion? Engines were the best part of "his plane". Good guy, gentle man, and I miss him.

Leftover cheeseburger washed down with Miller Lite

Might enjoy a hit of a recent-vintage win over Ohio State off the DVR.  Might even have to go for the triple over the course of the weekend.  That stuff is like crack.

Go NAVY!!!  And for the strawberry on top - Navy is wearing the submarine honorific uni's!  If you're not (or weren't) on a submarine, then you're a target.  An easy target, like OSU.

Nothing on the grill tonight, the vertical charcoal hopper on my smoker rusted a hole and flames shot through half way up - where no flame is supposed to be.  Instead of the chance to turn my entire house into a giant campfire, I chose to retire the grill.

So again - GO NAVY!!!!

Need to up my game with something in TC for Holiday guests to our new place around the New Year. Just learning my first gas grill (Weber) and year round grilling under a covered back deck. Doing internet searches for ideas now as a matter of fact.

Babysitting my Army vet Dad tonight, like every night anymore. Worse than a toddler. Senility is no joke. I worked him through his physical therapy exercises as I do every evening, but it has taken him an hour since then to get ready for bed, and that is typical. Mom has no patience for him any longer by this point in the day. I'm glad I have moved in to help keep her sane. Wish I was drinking, but not sure the impact of that on my own patience and tolerance. [Edited two hours later to add: parents have gone to bed, dog has been walked around the block, and now I'm enjoying a North Peak Blitzen Festivus Ale, to which I give a thumbs up.]

Looking forward to Army-Navy game tomorrow even more than usual--my son-in-law, a non-Academy Naval officer, is attending for the first time. Rather ironic, as he has submitted his resignation after more than a decade of service, in part because of Tuberville's shenanigans. (He was one of the more than 400 officers whose promotions were held hostage.) He can earn at  twice as much in the private sector beginning next spring, they'll get to choose where they want to live (stuck in FL right now and hate it), and the Navy is losing one of their best officers. Go Navy! Beat Army! Beat Politicians!

Also tomorrow: my annual cookie-making extravaganza begins! What are your favorite holiday cookies?

Thanks. He's had ninety great years, still has his sense of humor, and is very appreciate of my being there to help him. His father had the same symptoms (memory loss, physical deterioration, mild but increasing dementia; not sure if Grandpa also had obsessions about toothbrushes and flashlights, though), but a decade earlier in life, so Dad figures he's done pretty well. He admits that he shouldn't have even survived his first week of life on their rural west Michigan farm, but has gone on to serve in the Army in post-conflict Korea in MI, earn four college degrees, do significant research in climatology including co-authoring an important foresighted scientific paper on CO2 back in the 80s, and raise me.

Go Army.  My father served in a Pershing missile group in the early/mid 60's. So I was born in the Army hospital on the base.  I guess that means I should root for Army.

Been drinking some Bells Oberon Eclipse lately.  Not bad, but the original is better.

I'm drinking Yellow Tail Shiraz, which was on sale at the LCBO.

Tonight we had a stir fry with a bit of ham and leftover vegetables before they go bad (mostly broccoli and red pepper); tomorrow we'll have beef stew (with the twenty pounds of carrots we got from Costco).

Bought a couple 8 ounce cans of Frogichlaus at a bottle shop in Portland a few days ago. Having one tonight. 14% and tasty. Their Samichlaus replica. Brewed in Akron. One of very few good things I can think of that come from Ohio. Apart from football players that go north anyway.

Watching Furman and Montana. Got a chuckle out of a few Furman fans holding up big FU signs. My new second favorite college football team.

and it would be an honor to meet you, as i have enjoyed meeting in-person so many of the mgodenziens.  however, barring injury to one of our sons who plays in college, i would be at his game on saturdays throughout the fall and thus missing all of michigan's games as i did this year. he starts for his college team so my fall weekends are a bit of a yackity-sax overnight travel for me. i literally take my coach headphones off and run off the high school field on friday nights, jumping in my truck, driving all night to make it to wherever the college son's game is by kick-off time.

2024 is likely the last season for that with the timing of various sons' eligibility.  so, Lord willing, 2025 and beyond i will again be attending more michigan games in person.  so many good people here and they have been fun to meet.

I just read, A Civil War - Army vs Navy a Year Inside College Football's Purest Rivalry by John Feinstein to prepare for today's game (late post).

It was a good book but not one of Feinstein's best.  I am looking forward to the game as I know a little more about the background.
