Friday Night BBQ, Adult Beverage, and What Are Your Memorial Day Wknd Plans

Submitted by xtramelanin on May 22nd, 2020 at 9:46 PM

Mates,

After four straight days of snow up north last week (not kidding), winter ended this week (only partially kidding).  The weather has been gorgeous up here and the BBQ is lit.  We have had a spring we'll remember the rest of our lives but hopefully some normalcy is returning.

The interweb tells me that Memorial Day started out in 1868 or thereabouts, not as a veterans day, but for this:

In 1868, Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic issued General Order Number 11 designating May 30 as a memorial day “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.”

With honor to those who fell so we could live in this great country, I hope you have good plans for the weekend.  The questions are:

1.  What's on your BBQ/plate/in your cup?

2.  What is on the schedule for the weekend?

Be safe, Go Blue

Wife and I are taking a trip to Nashville next weekend! Never been before so if you have any restaurant or activity suggestions let me know.

Thank you Veterans! ??

Plans for the weekend include a reverse sear on a London Broil and some Heady Topper in a can.
FINALLY can enjoy some time on the deck after a winter that seemed to never end.

All the best to you and your family XM!

Getting some ribs tender down here in Louisiana for a BBQ tomorrow, sipping on an Old Fashioned w Buffalo Trace bourbon.  Gotta say - pretty fucking good start to weekend!

Hope to get a little sun, listen to some good Blues and southern Rock, and leave TV off for 3 days.

Go Blue!!!

1.  Might try smoking a pork shoulder.  I hear they're pretty idot-proof as long as one can control the temp pretty well.

2.  I'll be doing a rain dance.  We haven't had a drop of rain since our last snowfall in early April.  I'm scared to think of what my lawn is going to look like by September.

I use a probe thermometer with 2 leads one for cooking temp and one for internal.  I keep the temp at 250 until the internal is 203.  Bone will slide right out, and the ‘cue will be perfect.   We have rain today but tomorrow I’ll be smoking a whole pork belly, and doing a lobster boil on Monday.

So, my 30th birthday is Sunday. My wonderful wife had made plans for us to spend this weekend in Louisville visiting the bourbon trail. We cancelled those plans for obvious reasons. Tonight, I said screw it I should be in Louisville,  I'm having something nice for dinner, so I reverse seared a couple ribeyes. Turned out delicious. Then my brother in law came over with his wife to sit by the fire with us. He was kind and got me a bottle of New Riff Single Barrel for my bday. Now, everyone is gone or in bed, but me and the trusty dog are watching the last few logs burn, I'm finishing glass of aforementioned bourbon, and listening to the blues and spring peepers at the same time. Cannot and will not complain.

Yeah, not my best prose.  I sure there are many beverages that go better with grilling than WHOLE milk and I don't know of anyone that would grill chicken in WHOLE milk or any other kind.  To think I posted that on one of my non-drinking nights.  I drank a Centennial while grilling black & M Go Bleu burgers tonight.

Plans were to replace the deck boards on the deck, but Lowe's ran out of what we need. Now we are going to sit on the deck and see how many beverages we can put away before the sun sets. I have an amazing bride who supports my crazy.

EDIT: Monday is also squat days. I have 65% 75% 85% 80% 75% for sets of five. Then 40 40's.

isn't every day squats day? I applaud your workout...that's rough. All joking aside I truly do full body every workout. Monday is power Monday with heavy and bigs. Friday is death day...last week we did F.T.S...135 oly bar, deadlift into clean into press, into front squat one connected move...set of 20. Follow with 20 disciplined push ups, and end with 20 floor wipes at 135 oly bar...

Wife opened a cheap bottle of white for some recipe, can't let it go bad.

In-laws 50th anniversary is tomorrow, we are doing ribeyes.  Spend the rest of the weekend finishing building the adjustable incline bench for my power rack.

The wife found out about Drag Queen Bingo which we just participated in via Zoom.  The queen was in London while most of the participants were in the U.S.  300 people on Zoom.  Very entertaining.  This is where you realize your brain has turned to mush, but it gives you the feeling that we are all in this together as life in the age of Covid was discussed on the call.

Drinking a nice Helles from Pipeworks.  Making awesome BBQ chicken kabobs on Sunday where I make the rub and the sauce from scratch.

I'm smoking a pork butt this weekend. I've pretty much perfected doing so on a Weber kettle grill using the snake method. Currently brining the butt.

Drinking some beers from Outer Range. They're a great brewery out of Frisco, CO and specialize in IPAs. Also, having a side of nice indica and trying to prevent the army of moths that have invaded the Front Range from entering my apt.

Leftovers. Kentucky Owl (batch 3).

Not doing anything this weekend other than installing a roof rack on the truck cap and building a Lego death star with (for) my kids.  The longer I keep them occupied, the happier the wife will be. I'll be working on Monday as Tuesday is a heavy work day.

hillbilly,

how serious were you about splitting a side of beef with robf?  he doesn't need 1/4 of beef (1/2 of the 1/2) but would want maybe 25% of that, with you getting the rest.  if you think you really want it, and that you really will be out here in mid-to-late november, then lets make some plans.

regardless, good luck with the lego death star.  why so much going on tuesday?  are your courts meeting live, or are you 'zooming' on tuesday?

I'm serious about the beef. If my family can't make it up there, my brother-in-law opted in to make the trip with me.

Pseudo court all day Tuesday. An in person hearing in the morning then two different zoom hearings in the afternoon. Not a lot of consistency with court scheduling right now.

do you have some type of burner account or ph# that i can contact you direct, or would you be more comfortable maybe going through seth, who might have my contact info?

i had a prelim set for last friday which i won a motion to adjourn b/c they wanted to run a 'zoom' prelim on a hotly contested matter.  the court granted my motion and we tee off this coming friday, in an actual court room.  i have missed that, and will be happy to be back.  i spoke with another long-time practioner who had done a zoom prelim and the only non-four-letter words they used to describe it were 'nightmare'.  the other words were a lot more harsh.

No burner accounts so Seth may be best option. Or you may be able to message me on Reddit under the name WolverineHillbilly.

Will that be your first in person hearing since around March?  I've done about 6 zoom hearings so far and only had connection problems with one. All have been primarily legal argument or to the extent testimony was needed it only involved the parties. I have one Thursday where the opposing party has a couple witnessess subpoenaed so it'll be interesting to see how the court handles sequestration.

i've had a bunch of zoom stuff that was either arraignments or motions, no evidentiary stuff and i will object if/when they try to force that on me and a client.

as to your case where the witnesses will be on camera too, suggest you have them specifically certify that they are alone in the room and will remain so during the entirety of their testimony with the obligation to notify the court immediately if that should change during their testimony.  you might want to have the court and counsel on the same page and basically make it something like an additional part of the swearing in.  have heard of all sorts of mischief with witnesses via zoom.

will contact seth and copy/paste your comments.

25 yrs ago i went out there one july and golfed PGA west at la quinta with a bunch of buddies.  i 'invented' an award for the group and ended up winning it.  it was called 'closest to the temperature'.  IIRC, we teed off at about 10 a.m.   temp that day was 118.  i won the award with a 110.  hold the applause...
