Just got back from TC. Successfully managed to talk my wife into buying property up there. We're headed back to the Glen Arbor area in a few weeks to start shopping. (Humble-brag-bang)

Good move, Traverse City is an absolutely gorgeous place!  I spent a lot of time as a child at my sisters house in Petoskey, just a couple of blocks from the beach.  I love that part of the state, if there was any kind of business to sustain my current way of life I'd be there in a heartbeat!

We're open to anything in the Leelanau Peninsula as long as it is either on the water or very close and has access to a private dock, but we prefer Glen Lake as our first option. It really is a great area because of the endless outdoors activities, as well as being so close to Traverse City, which is basically Ann Arbor Up North without the major university. (College town feel without the college)

Good for you.  My wife and I have been actively looking up north too for a cottage, preferably on a lake, but more in the Petoskey region.  But just a warning, the market is VERY tight up there for buyers.  Not a lot of quality places available (especially on the water) except at high price points.  And when good properties come along, they often sell quickly with multiple offers.   I've called our realtor up there a number of times asking about a property that just came available and she'd say they already had several full price offers.  I guess a lot of people have suddenly decided they want to stay closer to home and vacation where they can just drive to!   The best of luck to you.

We are thinking of buying a vacant lot and building a house. We (by that I mean she) tend to be picky about houses and layout and it seems more reasonable for us to do it that way. Plus there isn't as much pressure or dealing with competing offers, as you have had to do. But plans always seem to make sense until you put them into practice, so we may change things once we actually get up there and start seriously looking.

squirrel this away in the back of your brain, but if you and dr. EYB actually get to wanting a builder you might want to contact me.  i do a ton of work in that industry, teach the required licensing continuing education classes, and a bunch of other stuff.  i know the folks in NW, including leelanau, that do that type of build and can probably help you.

i actually testified in a trial in that county as an expert in construction years ago.  i got my builders license when mrs. xm and i got married so i could build us a house since we had no money.  it worked. built other stuff, too, but its not my day-to-day gig.

A couple of weeks ago I had plans to put a couple of stuffed chickens on the pit with a few other items.. but my entire house was destroyed by the hurricane that happened down here in Lake Charles that decided to drop a tornado on my house. So sadly.. I'll not be doing that. Instead I get to work 6am to 7pm 7 days a week. Anywho.. I miss all the good times on this blog. Shit went sideways and downhill quick.

Y'all have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the holiday for me. It's much appreciated.

I took yesterday off to get the kid to a reading assessment at school.  He's slightly above grade level (4th), which I expected but it still awesome to hear.  Taking today off, also, for a long weekend.  I think we'll cook some chicken and baked beans over the fire pit Saturday night because its supposed to really cool down.

I'm leaving at 2 for Bradford, PA. Girlfriend really wanted to get out so were going to doing some hiking in Allegheny National Forest. It will probably do us a lot of good to get away after being stuck in our tiny 1-bed apartment all summer.

I'm hoping to go golfing, I'm new to it and it will only be about my fifth time ever but I really enjoy it so far! Probably cookout with my parents and brother at some point too. Also thinking about switching cellphone carriers to Xfinity mobile, anyone have experiences with that good or bad yet? I'm switching from Sprint so can't imagine it would be worse but I don't enjoy the thought of giving Comcast more of my money.

Probably head to the Oakland County Farmers Market tomorrow morning for some fresh produce and breakfast at Red Wood Grill. I found some heirloom tomatoes last weekend that totally rocked - I will be doubling up this time around, and making plenty of fresh biscuits, salads, and maybe another tomato pie (if you've never had one of the South's hidden cultural treasures, get thee to Southern Living's website and download the recipe).

I might make myself a cocktail as well. It's been a while ... a loooooong while.

here's a picture of robf as he cleans up the board in the middle of the night:

Paul Bunyan - The Beginning of the Journey

my weekend better include a visit from you, OP, and robf, assuming he's not too tired from swinging his ax all night.
