Just got back from TC. Successfully managed to talk my wife into buying property up there. We're headed back to the Glen Arbor area in a few weeks to start shopping. (Humble-brag-bang)

Good move, Traverse City is an absolutely gorgeous place! I spent a lot of time as a child at my sisters house in Petoskey, just a couple of blocks from the beach. I love that part of the state, if there was any kind of business to sustain my current way of life I'd be there in a heartbeat!

Nice! Whereabouts? We rent a place on Long Lake every August. Great little lake. If I can turn working from home into a permanent thing I'd absolutely consider moving up there.

hatter and EYB up north, in striking distance? be still my beating heart.
glad you guys had good visits. hatter, you missed out on little hatter petting the sheep, playing with the chickens, and chasing cattle around. maybe next year.

If the three of us ever got together I think Hatter and I would be extremely lucky to have a lawyer present.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:10 AM ^
....and a security force???
September 4th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^
what is the line in the old song, "send lawyers, guns and money!"
September 4th, 2020 at 10:25 AM ^
That made me think of another trio for some reason:

I can provide the security.

We're open to anything in the Leelanau Peninsula as long as it is either on the water or very close and has access to a private dock, but we prefer Glen Lake as our first option. It really is a great area because of the endless outdoors activities, as well as being so close to Traverse City, which is basically Ann Arbor Up North without the major university. (College town feel without the college)

Good for you. My wife and I have been actively looking up north too for a cottage, preferably on a lake, but more in the Petoskey region. But just a warning, the market is VERY tight up there for buyers. Not a lot of quality places available (especially on the water) except at high price points. And when good properties come along, they often sell quickly with multiple offers. I've called our realtor up there a number of times asking about a property that just came available and she'd say they already had several full price offers. I guess a lot of people have suddenly decided they want to stay closer to home and vacation where they can just drive to! The best of luck to you.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:46 AM ^
We are thinking of buying a vacant lot and building a house. We (by that I mean she) tend to be picky about houses and layout and it seems more reasonable for us to do it that way. Plus there isn't as much pressure or dealing with competing offers, as you have had to do. But plans always seem to make sense until you put them into practice, so we may change things once we actually get up there and start seriously looking.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:54 AM ^
squirrel this away in the back of your brain, but if you and dr. EYB actually get to wanting a builder you might want to contact me. i do a ton of work in that industry, teach the required licensing continuing education classes, and a bunch of other stuff. i know the folks in NW, including leelanau, that do that type of build and can probably help you.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:57 AM ^
That would be amazing. Trying to find a good contractor is like trying to find a chocolate fudge bar in a sewage pond.
On another note, is there anything you don't do? Lol
September 4th, 2020 at 10:32 AM ^
Have you seen XM's youtube series on DIY heart transplants? Simply brilliant.
September 4th, 2020 at 11:24 AM ^
i actually testified in a trial in that county as an expert in construction years ago. i got my builders license when mrs. xm and i got married so i could build us a house since we had no money. it worked. built other stuff, too, but its not my day-to-day gig.

I've got a guy... Vincent Ludwig.
September 4th, 2020 at 10:12 AM ^
In that case, it will be somewhat easier for you. There still seem to be a decent supply of good vacant waterfront lots up there. And building will enable you to get exactly what you want. We're getting closer to going this route ourselves given the market for existing homes being so tight.

Good move. Sitting on my deck on Arbutus Lake, listening to the loons, watching Vega light up overhead and Jupiter and Saturn to the south....simply beautiful. I wish you this dream fulfilled.

A couple of weeks ago I had plans to put a couple of stuffed chickens on the pit with a few other items.. but my entire house was destroyed by the hurricane that happened down here in Lake Charles that decided to drop a tornado on my house. So sadly.. I'll not be doing that. Instead I get to work 6am to 7pm 7 days a week. Anywho.. I miss all the good times on this blog. Shit went sideways and downhill quick.
Y'all have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the holiday for me. It's much appreciated.

Well, this is shitty ass news for a Friday morning POSBANG. I hope you're able to get your house rebuilt (or replaced), and so sorry you lost whatever it was you lost. I can't imagine that happening... Here's an upvote in the slim hope that it helps in some way.

Sorry to hear about H Laura - that was a beast of a storm. I'm glad you and your family are safe. I have braced three times for the eventuality you find yourself and have been spared thus far. I chalk it up to the cost of paradise. Love from Houston

Heading up to Hubbard Lake for a family weekend. Lots of barbecue, bourbon and cigars.

If there is a heaven I'll know it because I will find myself suddenly in that room pulling a t-shirt over my head.

Gustave per your, and a couple others, recommendation last Friday I'm trying out the injected pulled pork tomorrow.

I took yesterday off to get the kid to a reading assessment at school. He's slightly above grade level (4th), which I expected but it still awesome to hear. Taking today off, also, for a long weekend. I think we'll cook some chicken and baked beans over the fire pit Saturday night because its supposed to really cool down.

Baseball tourney for my oldest near Orlando. Gasp and swoon - they don't wear masks.
September 4th, 2020 at 9:08 AM ^
Outdoors? No big deal, right? You could get it but the odds are low. AFAIK there haven't been any meaningful spikes post-Sturgis. It's prolonged exposure to stagnant indoor air that's worrisome.

Headin to our Shanty Creek cottage...golf, boating on Torch and Shorts! Love it up there.

Yes the board is not in a good place. But points are back, they’re meaningless yet we all love them. Don’t deny it. Just bang me. Upvotes and positive vibes!

I'm leaving at 2 for Bradford, PA. Girlfriend really wanted to get out so were going to doing some hiking in Allegheny National Forest. It will probably do us a lot of good to get away after being stuck in our tiny 1-bed apartment all summer.
September 4th, 2020 at 7:27 AM ^
I'm hoping to go golfing, I'm new to it and it will only be about my fifth time ever but I really enjoy it so far! Probably cookout with my parents and brother at some point too. Also thinking about switching cellphone carriers to Xfinity mobile, anyone have experiences with that good or bad yet? I'm switching from Sprint so can't imagine it would be worse but I don't enjoy the thought of giving Comcast more of my money.

Gonna watch JJ play on ESPN tonight! Do some riding after work Saturday and Sunday. You guys enjoy Michigan. Wifey and I plan to be back the mitten October. Go Blue!!

Also who’ll be in Beulah for their HTTV pickup? I might stop in around lunchtime to say hi to Seth. ( he really is an ok dude).
September 4th, 2020 at 9:14 AM ^
I'm temporarily roosting in the NW Lower Peninsula. I may stop by with my brother-in-law. Time TBD. Super-cool that Seth made the opportunity available.

Probably head to the Oakland County Farmers Market tomorrow morning for some fresh produce and breakfast at Red Wood Grill. I found some heirloom tomatoes last weekend that totally rocked - I will be doubling up this time around, and making plenty of fresh biscuits, salads, and maybe another tomato pie (if you've never had one of the South's hidden cultural treasures, get thee to Southern Living's website and download the recipe).
I might make myself a cocktail as well. It's been a while ... a loooooong while.

Erin Moriarty. Turn off safe search and enjoy.
September 4th, 2020 at 11:02 AM ^
What if my "safe search" is never on?
September 4th, 2020 at 8:15 AM ^
Yeah, currently working my way through The Expanse (middle of season 3- probably has already entered my top 5 already), so I'll have to put that on hold just a bit for The Boys.
September 4th, 2020 at 10:29 AM ^
I finished season 1 last month. Now that you remind me I may start season 2 this weekend if I have time.

here's a picture of robf as he cleans up the board in the middle of the night:
my weekend better include a visit from you, OP, and robf, assuming he's not too tired from swinging his ax all night.

I’m sleeping at Interlochen S.P. other than that no set plans - give me time window.
