Friday Blizzard, BBQ and NFL Playoff Picks Thread

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on January 12th, 2024 at 7:30 PM

Mates,

If you live in Michigan, particularly up north or most anywhere on the west side of the state is a blizzard out there.  Some places are looking at 20" of snow, which healthy, but the real dinger is this:

Snow amounts aside, the greatest impacts from this system will likely be driven by strong winds. East-northeast winds continue to ramp up this afternoon, reaching max strength this evening and overnight. Wind gusts ranging from 35-55 mph are expected across much of the area through this time frame. Combination of falling/blowing snow will lead to blizzard conditions at times.

55 mph winds?  Fun!  Power is going to go out and we all need to thank LSA2000 and his co-workers in advance for getting it back on.

Beyond that, it is indeed Friday and hopefully you are home, safe, and possibly going to enjoy a meal and a beverage.   What's on your plate and what, pray tell, is in your cup?

Lastly, the NFL playoffs start tomorrow and us long-suffering Lions fans actually care. The Lions are in the playoffs.  Have a home game.  And are favored vs. the Stafford-lead LA Rams.

Saturday games:

Browns     1.5   @ Houston

@KC         4.5  Miami

Sunday

@Buffalo   9.5   Steelers

@Dallas       7    Packers

@Detroit      3    LA Rams

Monday Night

Philly           3     @Tampa Bay

Who you got for your NFL picks, especially the Lions game?

Have a great weekend.   Be smart about the weather if you are venturing out.  Barn chores were a challenge up here tonight, especially with 4 lambs born last night/this morning.  Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to get 'er done.

Oh yeah, in case you hadn't heard, we are NATIONAL CHAMPIONS in football.  Not everyone knows.  Tell people, particularly your sparty and ohio friends.

These celebrities graduated from the University of Michigan, football's ...

Dinner of italian sausage with all the trimmings has been consumed.  Enjoying a Miller Lite and pondering breaking out something more robust.

I have too many years as a Lions fan to have any confidence in picking them, so I won't.

This storm has been a little underwhelming so far.  All the schools closed today, along with a number of other places, and ... it was perfectly fine for local travel.  Started getting worse after 5:00pm and I wouldn't want to be out there now that it's dark, but c'mon.

Yep.  Live west of GR and didn’t cancel any meetings or plans for this afternoon.  The wife thought I should because according to the weather peeps it was all going down at 10 this morning.  Can’t fool me!  This is not my first rodeo here in W Michigan.

Now….once the lake effect kicks in we may be in for a doozy. That stuff can get crazy and unpredictable.

Invested all my NC and Rose Bowl winnings on KC.  Locked in on Tuesday, KC -3.5 and -185 on the money line when I saw the forecast.  Now -4.5 and -225.  Go Chiefs.

Love LA but cannot bet (root) against the Lions just to win a wager!

Hmm - I can’t remember a Monday night playoff game in the past. Is that new? I have Houston, Kansas City (I think they’ll get all the calls at home), Buffalo, Dallas, Detroit, and Philly. Would love to actually watch that KC-Miami game but I refuse to pay for Peacock. Wind chill is supposed to be -23.

I think they started having MNF playoff games when they expanded the playoffs and only the top seed gets a buy.

Agree on Peacock.  Didn't buy it for college football and not buying it for a playoff game.  Buying Peacock to watch games just means NBC will try to get more games on the Peacock.

Going out to dinner to an Irish pub here in AZ for fish & chips.  I will see what they have on tap.  It was chilly for here, 57° today, 32° tonight, which is below average.

And I will wear my Michigan hat and hopefully someone will comment, because I'm still basking in the fact that we won the whole fucking thing!

Image of Win the whole fucking thing.

I was in Florida for the national championship game for work and had the wife come down after meetings finished for a little get away. Wore my Michigan gear out and got a lot of congrats and compliments even from Buckeyes. The only guy who made a negative comment was a Sparty who yelled go green at a bar we were having dinner at. I just made a wanking off motion to him and laughed him off. I was in Orlando proper and saw a ton of Bills gear too, strangely enough.

Plans to meet my cousin and his family for a feast at Al Ameer in Dearborn canceled. Built a fire and made gumbo here in Dexter. Next to Peach “Mountain” it’s a bit colder than Ann Arbor 12 miles south, so we may get snow all night and no rain.

My father told me in 1985 to never give my heart to the Lions and I have followed that advice. My son however, is not heeding that same advice that I gave him and is feeling confident about the Lions this weekend.

Leftover spaghetti and my favorite IPA-style non-alcoholic brew from Athletic Brewing for Dry January.  If you like IPA and you don't want to consume alcohol it's well worth checking out.  Michigan hockey game on BTN+.

I also have little to say about the Lions.  I want to see them win, of course, but if they do it will be only the 2nd playoff win for them in my lifetime.  That's saying something.

Getting snow tonight.  Not as much here on Colorado's Front Range as in MI but quite cold.  Getting all the way up to 3 degrees tomorrow.

Stay safe back there.

outside Cleveland it’s a mix of rain and snow. Slushy and ~33F out, but precipitation is gonna stop soon. Winds at ~20 mph with 40 mph gusts.

Started my typical Thu - Sat 48h fast at 6pm last night. Bells double cream stout, old forrester 1921, and of course, a brick of PBR tonight.

Cherry Kush in the bowl but will likely smoke that then switch to the gold standard, blue dream. Weed is legal in Ohio y’all

In the Thumb of Michigan, so the storm just started here about 4 hours ago.

Made General Tso's chicken and fried rice for dinner, now sipping on what most would consider a weird combination of Seagrams and Squirt.

On the Lions game, I said before the season that I would be thrilled with the division and one playoff win. This feels even more urgent now with Stafford coming back to town, feels like a must win. I'll take the Lions.

Otherwise give me Browns, Chiefs, Bills, Cowboys, and Bucs.

I was delighted to send a picture of the Maize and Blue lights atop the Empire State building to one of our M legacy son's chidhood friends who, tragically, is a Bucknut graduate. He lives in midtown Manhattan. My caption of the pic: "Hey! Look up! Thinking of you"

Our New England weather nonsense doesn't start until 1am. Generator is ready to go.

Cup is nothing but grape juice and seltzer. Dinner was decent Italian take out from our favrorite local place.

Stay dry, warm, and safe dudes, dudettes, dudellas, etc. And remember: 15-0. Yep, that happened. 👍👍

At first I thought you meant DQ Blizzard and I had a whole tirade ready about them removing the Nerds combination. But stay safe fellow national champions and…go blue!

Our main  dish is leftover scalloped potatoes and ham with three bean salad as a palate cleanser.

We had our blizzard Monday night-lost power and missed the game. A second run at us last night but we escaped with little snow-just cold and wind. Highs around zero the next three days-very cold for us. We're hunkered down and have the wood stove ablazing.

We are a very happy family, especially the youngest grandson, after the Michigan achievements. If the Lions would pull this off we will be beside ourselves.

My hope is that the power stays on and nothing hits the house.

NFL picks are Houston (ugh the Browns), KC (even though I'm a Dolphins fan), Steelers (Hate the Bills), Dallas because it's home, Detroit, Philly

4-hour round trip just completed that included a 90 minute wait in line to get a photo with the National Championship trophy at the M-Den.

Totally worth it.

Long week but still smiling!   Spicy shrimp and salami pasta.   Manhattan with Catoctin Creek Rye

Longtime Dolphins fan (like really longtime….fandom started in elementary school during the perfect season).   But a soft spot for the Lions as well.   Fins probably lose…not sure Tua’s ever been outside when it’s below 40.   Which means when the Lions win, Dolphins will have the longest NFL drought without a playoff win.

Just light rain here in Central VA.   Be safe in the ugly weather!

God bless Poncho’s for staying open for lengua tacos.

I wanna hit the Glenlivet but I should plow at some point and it’s probably best if I wait until after…

Good thing I waited. The kids left the 4 wheeler key on so I had to jump it. But you can’t just jump it and go, you have to let the battery charge long enough to run the winch without killing the engine, so it adds about 25 minutes of pita to the whole project.

Now I really need a drink.

Here in Grand Rapids we’re sitting at around 6 inches on the ground so far and expect another 6 more to drop by the AM.

Taco salad and apple slices for dinner (feel like I’m 8 years old) and sans alcohol until February. Can’t remember the last time I didn’t, or didn’t need to, consume alcohol when watching my precious Lions.

I think Stafford and the Rams will pose a huge challenge Sunday night and it could be a shoot out with whoever has the last possession pulling out the win. That said, I think there is just so much hype and emotion on the Lions sidelines right now to pick against them. I see Laporta playing and the ground game limiting possessions for LA. Final is 31-24 with kneel downs for Goff and Co.

Snow hasn't started yet here in MN, but we're finally down to single digit temps at least.

Pork enchiladas and cheesy rice with cilantro sour cream. Black Cherry Vernors in the glass.

As for this weekend's action, I like the following (all picks against the spread):

Browns, Chiefs, Bills, Packers, Rams, Bucs

Another inch or two of rain expected tonight in Virginia, so we're sitting in...  Dinner was left over tortellini with a butternut squash sauce.  Just water for now, maybe a little wine with the wife later.

I'm pretty sure the Lions will beat the Rams.  Stafford will get his, because Stafford, but the Lions offense seems pretty good.  I heard LaPorta had an outside shot to play, which honestly stuns me.  Even if he can, I kinda hope they let him rest a little more.  Watching his knee flex the wrong way was reminiscent of Grant Newsom's knee doing incorrect things.

Met a Bama fan in the grocery store tonight and asked his thoughts of DeBoer.  He's a little worried about him following a legend.  I wished him good luck with it and he asked who I'm cheering for.  A simple "Go Blue" was all it took.  He smiled, said congrats, and thanked me for not rubbing it in.

No worries, dude - I've lived through my share of dong punches.  I don't rub in tough losses anymore.  Except for OSU or MSU nutjobs...

Just finished snowblowing the driveway.

Mgowife made orange chicken earlier and now we're packing as we're supposed to fly to Florida tomorrow morning. Allegiant says the flight is still on. Guess we'll see in the morning.

Go Lions 🏈🏈🏈

Edit: Winter storm Gerri decided we can't go to Florida today. Had to reschedule for two weeks from today. Hopefully the weather is better then.

DTE blows. It’s gone out multiple times for days on end three times in the last two years. I expect that it will again even with the alleged improvements. Not looking forward to dealing with Covid while having no power. At this point I am calling for public ownership of energy grid in Ann Arbor.

Lions will lose. Secondary is bad and Rams have significantly more playoff experience. Stafford will go off for 400 yards and 4 TDs. 31-24 Rams.

Fascinating storm from a meteorological POV (Meteorology actually was my undergrad major).  Incredible dynamics and the type of storm that tends to only effect Northern Michigan the way this one will only once a generation.

It's been cold everywhere --- shoot, it was 34 in Pasadena earlier this week.  Morning frost at the Rose Bowl.

Home teams will go 5-1 this weekend, with Dallas losing straight up to GB.

As a Lions fan, I'm trying not to get excited, but LA was gifted a cake schedule to end the season. I have to believe their 10-7 is a little fraudulent.

FYI: if the Lions beat the Rams, they're going to the Super Bowl. I know it.

See, my wife bought plane tickets to Portugal and I agreed without looking at the calendar. Odds are good that I am not going to be able to see any hypothetical Lions playoff games after this weekend. And if the Lions are going to go the Super Bowl, it will absolutely be in a season in which I have trouble watching the playoff games.

Will the Lions beat the Rams? Hell if I know. I like Campbell's aggressiveness--even if he should have kicked the extra point against Dallas after the first penalty--and it is a home game. I don't think the Lions have played a playoff game at home since Erik Kramer, and their one (1) playoff win of my lifetime came at home.

(I'm just grateful that the plane tickets weren't for last week. We could have changed them, it would have cost money and been a pain in the ass.)

Little or no wind here in A2 at the moment. Snow turned to rain and the weight of all that moisture was bending my shrubs to the ground so I had to go outside to knock the heavy wet snow off.

Shoveling that stuff tomorrow is going to be a damn good workout.

I’m going to pour some Talisker 10 shortly to continue celebrating 144.
