Franklin gets dreaded vote of confidence from PSU AD

Submitted by Go Blue in NC on

As the title states, James Franklin received the dreaded vote of confidence from PSU AD Sandy Barbour. While she insists that Franklin "is not on the hot seat and won't be on the hot seat in December," I'm not too sure I believe that with PSU yet to play MSU or OSU this season, despite his steep $12 million buyout. He had back to back 9-4 seasons which most likely got him the Penn State gig.  But he's 1-15 vs ranked teams and 8-24 vs anyone over .500.  Not really a stellar record vs good competition I'd say.  I hope he stays put for a while.

And I give him kudos for winning 2 bowl games as well while dealing with the challenge of recruiting at Vandy.  He was competitive in few but not most.  He beat Georgia by 3, lost 2 games by total of 7 points, lost 6 by average of 25.  Competitive in 3, not so much in 6

Yep, exactly. And if you look at victories over conference teams with winning records, it's even worse. And that only team he beat that was ranked was UGA when they lost like half their starters to injury. Vandy caught them right when they lost everyone and UGA lost a bunch of other games and finished unranked. Franklin is the poster boy for the idea that it's much easier to go from bad to good than it is from good to great. There is no data to suggest he can make that great leap.

Isn't this the 1st year that he has a full roster? That should buy him another year, but with RU and MD (not to mention M) recruiting NJ well, maybe a new coach could spark some life into PSU

I'm fine with whomever they hire.  Although giving Franklin a 10 year extension would be best.

Please Les, don't take that job, even if they back up the Brinks truck.  Don't put me in a position where I have to root against you and hope you fail.

Go coach at Purdue or something.  Better yet, stay out of the Big 10 entirely.  Surely there's an ACC or Pac-12 team that could use your services.

Losing on the road to a National Title contender --- even a big loss, that is fine.

But he did signal to the team with that FG that "I'm qutting on you here."

Does the team quit back?  I think they still played decently hard even after the FG on Saturday.  But the longer-term answer to that question will be more known on Saturday (and beyond).  For Franklin's sake, he better hope the answer to this question is "no."

Is there another James Franklin coaching for PSU?  Because if they're talking about Head Coach James Franklin, whomever signed that contract in the AD should have to pay Franklin the money out of their own pocket.

When he was hired the program was in turmoil.  BoB had taken over and done remarkably well.  Sanctions had kicked in but weren't taking a bite yet.  Whatever coach took over was going to face some out of ordinary challenges.

Whomever took that job was most likely going to want a large buyout to insure they had some time to right the ship.  That makes sense and any good agent should have gotten that.  The problem is that there seems to be no improvement or hope of improvement under Franklin.

Now, if you want to discuss truly ridiculous buyout check what Iowa gave to Ferentz this year.

As long as he scrapes his way into a bowl by getting to 6-6, I could see him being around for next year.  But his seat will be scorching hot next year.  I think given the sanctions and the prolonged down spell PSU has been in, they may be more accomodating to Franklin than M was to RRod.  But I would be shocked if he steps into M Stadium in 2018 as the Penn State head coach.  There just doesnt seem to be any upward trajectory and I think 4 season of .500 football will doom him.

Belicheck?

Those delusional pedo enablers probably believe they have a shot with one of those coaches.

In all seriousness, which elite or even rising coach would join that shitshow?  They are deservedly tainted by the Sandusky scandal and even worse their Jonestown-esque handling of the fallout.  Just burn it all to the ground!

Would Brian Kelly go there if let go by Notre Dame?

Would Petrino leave Louisville again?

Would Tom Herman really want to leave Houston? - not if they get that Big 12 invite.

They have absolutely no shame, so I think Art Briles would be a good match for them, but I hope it doesn't happen because he is actually a good coach.

We have no idea about interpersonal issies within the Dept that can sink or swim a coach (eg Ted York). But from PSU fans, the ones I know are blaming outsiders (media, sanctions) on the teams performance and not Franklin. From that measure I do not expect him to go.

And a $12M buyout supports that notion. Egads who agreed to THAT?

I still think the hottest seat in the Big Ten right now is Darrell Hazell's - call me nuts, but I have to believe that even Purdue will not put up with that forever. As for Franklin, count me in the camp that thinks that if not this year for him then certainly next year is a telling year. Delusional athletic department, boosters and fans aside, they might very well be able to do better than Franklin and I have to believe he knows that on some level.

next year is penn states year. no more excuses, they already have a win penciled in against michigan. according to them we lose 90% of our starters and harbaugh is so stupid he is just riding the wave of hokes recruits.

He deserves 4 years, especially given the sanctions mess (which I know wasn't as bad as PSU fans think it was, but it still had a real effect).

PSU fans have been circling 2017 for a while (much like we had been circling 2015 as soon as Hoke's downturn started in 2013).

My prediction is PSU posts their worst record yet under Franklin this year (6 wins or less). Then  next year he improves to about 8 wins, but will that be enough in year 4? Especially if they lose to all three of MSU, OSU, UM again? That'll be the question.

Why wouldn't Miles take the Purdue job? I doubt he gets another shot at a blueblood program, especially since he's 62 years old. He has said that he wants to coach again, and he's a pretty youthful 62 so he might have another 5-6 years left. I could see a bottom-of-the-barrel Power 5 program that's looking to turn itself around like Purdue taking a chance on Miles. I think he would be a great hire for Purdue if Hazell doesn't get it together.
