wow, if he leaves then my excitement for Michigan football which is only at a 2/10 will officially be at a 0 because something is very wrong with the program for him to leave that quick

I'm more confused why people seem hell bent to try to infuse logic into this conversation. He already stated that he's a 2 of 10. Obviously he's just looking for more disaster trolling. The idea that an assistant coach would take an HC position is so unfathomable and outside of the realm, that the only response is to take that 2 and make it a 0 and declare it to be something "wrong" with the program.

Let him go. I'm sure Clemson needs more "fans".

I am still always gonna be a fan and root for Michigan. Not to be a negative sally but I am sick of getting my expectations up for Michigan football just for them to not be good which is why I am not excited for football season. I would love to see the team take steps forward but it seems to always take steps back instead

Being a positions coach and co-coordinator isn’t a destination job though. That’s the issue with your statement. This isn’t a lateral move by any means. He has the opportunity to run his own program and really make a name for himself.

Who in the hell has the career aspiration of being in the shadows of the playcalling DC and coaching corners at Michigan?

Yeah I understand what your saying but look at someone like Saddi Washington who didn’t go back to be the head coach at WMU his alma matter and instead stayed to be an assistant for Michigan. That alone speaks volumes in the different in culture and the problems. Who knows if it has anything to do with Mo and probably doesn’t after finding out he used to be an assistant there. Good luck to him if he takes the job

But it doesn’t. You’re comparing two completely different sports and situations. Saddi turned down the Western job because it’s easier to get a higher profile job than Western as an assistant in basketball. It happens all the time.

There’s not a higher profile job than Buffalo that’s willing to hire a position coach that is a co-DC that doesn’t actually run the defense.

You choose to pick a random outlier in a completely different sport instead of just admitting the reality. A guy who had zero schools interested in giving him sole possession of a DC role, let alone a head coaching job, was given an opportunity to be a head coach out of the blue. You want to compare that to Saddi, who is recognized as one of the better assistant coaches in the sport and as a result, he has the ability to sit and wait for the right job to fall in his lap.

Yeah true that isn’t the best example. My original take was bad and more just frustration for where the the football program is heading. Not particularly in Mo case but it just seems other coaches have not wanted to coach here and have left for lateral moves without a pay raise like Partridge and Washington going to OSU (not sure what he got paid but its still our rival) so that is my first instinct when I saw this. I think those examples go to the culture at Michigan.

A coach leaving for a head coaching gig indicates there is something very wrong with the program? Some of you need to take a break from the team/internet.

While I agree, it's also not hard to see why people are frustrated.  It's been a struggle to retain good assistants and the excitement about getting Mo is being quickly squashed by him leaving.  I think it's more frustration rearing its ugly head rather than logic.  People just want to see the football program win some big games and this sounds like a hit to that.  It's really as simple as that.  Good for Mo if he get it, but people will be disappointed they weren't able to keep him around longer.

I do think when you are hiring a coach, a factor to consider is how likely he is to leave in the near term.  You may want your second best option if he is more likely to stay longer.  Should JH have seen this coming?  I have no idea, but now we have a poor position group with no coach again.

Agree with this. McElwain was short term; we knew this was his soft landing before moving on. Linguist, in my mind, was probably expected to come and stay probably 2 years minimum, would be my guess. I feel like Harbaugh has 2 more years to make a splash before they look to replace him, at which time the assumption would be a new HC means an overhaul of the staff. If things went well and Harbaugh gave a good reason to stick around, then some of this defensive staff could easily be poached, and probably rightfully so.

Either way, I don't think there is a single person that expected Linguist to be staring at a HC offer without ever fielding a unit here.

Also, was Linguist on anyone's radar as a candidate before he came to UM? Legitimate question

I'm not sure how you could manage to do that.

What would be the profile of someone who wouldn't leave for a better job, in this case a much better job? Someone too old to be considered for a HC job or someone not good enough? Even Mattison left for a big raise and a promotion. Hoke used the second approach and it worked like he should have expected it to.

I think we should just accept there's a risk to hiring the best assistant coaches and it's worth taking. If we were losing assistants to lateral jobs that's another matter. It does make sense that could be more likely if you hired coaches from outside the region over nearly equally qualified coaches with closer ties to the area. But if you hire all local coaches that stifles your national recruiting. And even if we thought that was a good tradeoff, would we expect Mike Hart to turn down that job offer?

Losing Chris Partridge in what ended up being a lateral move was bad.  Losing a guy to a promotion is the cost of doing business.  Turns out when you hire talented, ambitious people they take their chances when they get them

Also, this has zero to do with Michigan football from a ‘what’s wrong with this program standpoint’.

it actually falls squarely on Kansas for hiring les miles...or on lsu for not firing him with cause so Kansas wouldn’t have hired him.  Kansas hired Buffalo’s coach and Unfortunately this has set off a domino effect which could ultimately negatively affect Michigan’s coaching staff.

Rarely does a HC get fired for sexually harassing college students in March, leading to a MAC program losing its head coach in late April, thus opening up an unexpected HC opportunity in May.

Linguist is a hired gun thus far in his career; that's not a problem but it was the reality when UM hired him.  Had this job at Buffalo not opened up he would have stuck around at least a year and then likely taken a shot at available HC jobs.  You're reading way too much into the state of UM football because a guy known for jumping around is jumping around.

But wait everyone. I have a feeling that if Linguist stays at UM and our defense sucks this year - which it very well could - CFor88 will be back in December saying how he "knew" JH should have let him leave to Buffalo when he had the chance...

Lol, sorry im not enthusiastic like the rest of you guys about the football program which has been spiraling in the wrong direction. Yeah if we were Ohio state or bama it wouldn’t be that big of a deal but reading the things that are said about the program there is clearly something wrong. Him leaving might not have anything to do with it but you guys are blind if you think its all sunshine and flowers within the program.

King Tot

May 7th, 2021 at 1:20 PM ^

I do not think a single person argued that the program is "sunshine and flowers" but instead that your take is bad and you should feel bad. It is reasonable to be upset at losing a promising young coach but he is getting a promotion and that, if anything, only indicates that Harbaugh identified a good coach. Be mad about the things that are worth it.

If you read my last comment I clearly stated that him leaving might not have to do with the issues at U of M so I don’t understand how I am moving the goalposts. Yeah my comment might have been premature and mixed with emotion of how the football program is currently a dumpster fire but like many fans I am sick of continuing to take steps back
