I don't think it's far-fetched to think that in healthier programs some OC/DCs think their future is brighter staying at the program in question than hopping to Buffalo in less than four months. I mean; do we think that the University of Buffalo or other similar programs wouldn't happily hire away the OC/DCs at Clemson, OSU, Bama, or a myriad of other less but still solid Power 5 programs, and they just haven't asked?

I get that. I think Saddi Washington turning down his alma mater, Western Michigan, was probably evidence of the strength and direction of UMBB. Similarly, I don't think this reflects great things with about the strength and direction of UMFB, but oh well.

Washington makes pretty much the same money as an assistant to Howard than the old head coach of Western was making.  He said he stayed at Michigan as a "quality of life" decision.

Also, the last coach of Western was there for 17 years, so it isn't exactly known as a launching pad to a P5 job.

Can’t wait for this come up as an excuse for Harbaugh when this season goes badly.  But...but...he lost his co DC to Buffalo and ADMISSSONS blocked the mass of elite talent that would have transferred in...and Gattis is still young...and it’s the DC’s first year....and you can’t expect to just beat Mel Tucker with less than eight years of recruiting!

This site is crazy, I bet if you go back a look at the comments when Durkin left for Maryland job, it would be praising Harbaugh for having a HC assistant farm. It is what is. A HC good program in the Mac is a great opportunity. But man does it suck to loose a rising position coach before he even gets through a season.

Actually, there was a great deal of anger here directed toward Durkin for supposedly interviewing with Maryland shortly before the OSU game in which our defense got punked.

Many if not most people here inferred, rightly or not, that Durkin's attention was elsewhere when it needed to be 100% focused on OSU.

This is a really big deal. Michigan has been playing football for 142 effing years without this guy. And we should be upset about him leaving?  Why is that?

If I was Buffalo, I would prefer a coach that doesn't leave every two years (unless I thought he was something really special.)

If I’m Buffalo, my HOPE is that I hire a coach that is gone in two years. That means he had huge success in those two seasons. At a small program like Buffalo, you take that success and you build on it with the next coach.

If a mid-major is holding onto coaches for long periods of time, that means they’re producing middling records. That’s just the way it goes.

Call me old school, but Linquist has a job and made a commitment to our program which includes our players and all of his recruiting efforts thus far. Mo loses my respect for looking for the next job before he does at least one season over here.

Nonetheless, I hope he stays here. If he's successful here and this team exceed expectations in the win column then he's welcome to grab the next opportunity down the road.

If you accepted a job, and then we’re offered a different job leading your own department with a significant increase in salary while also being able to choose your own staff and the direction your department would be moving, you’re saying you would turn down the increased salary and increased role?

Fat chance.

So no other job could possibly open in the next couple of years that he could take? Any more its loyalty to self above everything, schools, players, etc.  And people scratch their heads and can't figure out why Sports is tanking

I live in Buffalo and have an MBA from UB so it would be exciting to see Linguist come here (though not excited about the name jokes.)  I'm with MRunner73 to a large extent, you make a commitment and you stick with it.   That said, if Harbaugh really is on the hot seat and he has a bad year at Michigan does that set him back 2-4 years on the head coaching opportunity?  Leipold was here 6 years.  Sort of a unique opportunity to shine.  Solid base program with moderate expectations where you were a coach before.  There have always been carpet bagger coaches, but I miss the days when guys like Lloyd and Bo might have a job or two getting a resume together and then would stick with a program whether Texas A&M or whoever came calling.  It's like Aaron Rogers trying to get out of Green Bay.  Yeah he's good, but he comes off as an entitled douche bag.  To me Brady and New England is different because he was a free agent and it seemed like both sides wanted to see what they could do without the other.

Well this sucks.  Good on Linguist for finding a HC opportunity, but man it stinks to lose a guy with NFL experience - and with no reported buyout on his contract.

I’m all for upward mobility and looking out for yourself but count me as a guy that thinks when you take a job in this business and start coaching and recruiting kids you owe everyone a season.

If I had my way, I'd shuffle off to Buffalo
Sit by the lake, and watch the world go by
Ladies in the sun, listenin' to the radio
Like flowers on the sand, the rainbow in my mind

Balls. Wolverine Football is turning into what Detroit Lions football is to me. A baseline sad apathy is no fun.
