Good, another "Harbaugh thread" -- lets talk about food.

I am an In N Out zealot. I have had Fatburger, and it is probably better quality. But In and Out burgers -- if you get the right meat-to-cheese ratio; I do a 4x2 -- just have that melding of flavors that makes them amazing. 4x2, grilled onions, no tomato, with well-done fries. That's the way.

So far I've heard nothing but rumors and no one who will go on the record of something solid. I'm not saying he's not going anywhere, but I'm not taking anything at face value until a press conference is called.

These posts are frustrating.

No one will go on the record with something solid, because there is nothing solid to go on.  If one assumes the article is true,   Harbaugh still hasn’t been offered (or seemingly interviewed for) the job.   As Sopwith has pointed out, if he interviews, we will hear news.   If he takes it, we will here news.   If he signs a new contract with Michigan, we will here news.   Pretty much other than those three events, it is all speculation.

If we learned anything from the 2014 saga (and reading Bacon's book) there's likely 2 or 3 people outside of Harbaugh's immediate family who know what he's thinking of doing, and dozens of people around him who think they know but actually have no clue.

I hate this. All of it. That said: isn’t promoting Gattis akin to Marcus Freeman getting the bump at ND? He is young, and presently well thought of (following his Broyles win). He is an excellent recruiter (look at our WR room). I fear a novice taking the reigns but Harbaugh wasn’t calling offensive or defensive plays. If Gattis can keep the staff intact we have a chance to have a very good year right away and momentum is key in a transition like this.

hey now, i always qualified it with words like 'there's a non-zero chance' or 'i'll be surprised and disappointed if' he'd leave.  don't you go trouncing on my posts, mister.

for the record:  i get that it is possible he might leave, but he's home, he bleeds maize and blue more than any of us, he doesn't need the money, he's hiring new coaches, going to hockey games, his mom and dad live next door, etc. - he's not leaving.

so there.  if i'm wrong i will freely admit it.

I wonder how much the family issue comes into play here.  His parents are in their 80's and are currently living very close to a large portion of their grandchildren & great-grandchildren.  There are precious few years remaining for quality family time together.  If Jim goes to the other side of the country (with John already on the east coast), there will still be occasional visits but it will likely be just the holiday/special occasion get together... maybe a handful per year.  Jim could try to move them all out to Vegas (or wherever) along with him, but that might not be easy sell.

I don't know about Sarah Harbaugh's family - so this could pull almost as hard the other way if they are all in the Vegas area.

Because he’s already under contract here.
There’s no rush to get a new one signed.

Realistically, he could have decided he’s coming back (or never have considered leaving in the first place) and they’ll work out the details of the new contract over the next few months and get it signed in the spring/summer.

He doesn’t have to sign a deal to come back and the terms of a new deal don’t have to be set on January 20th for him to stay. Ultimately he will get a new deal, but this notion that if he’s coming back he would have signed already is extremely played out.

Just depends how much money.  Maybe for $10M he wouldnt even consider it, but for $20M he definitely would and raiders are trying to figure out where in between they want to offer him.

Don't know what's so puzzling about the simplest explanation for why they're taking so much time to hash it out.

If he leaves, it will suck to lose our coach but he isn't the only one who can win here. He had one big ten title and one win over the Buckeyes in 7 years, a losing record against both MSU and OSU, one bowl win in seven years, and zero top 5 recruiting classes since 2017. There were some coaching issues in the Georgia game with trying to run the ball on Jordan Davis and not enough shots taken/playing Cade too long. Maybe the next coach is a dud but I think it's far more likely than not that they can at least replicate that success. At the very least it's a wake up call to Warde that we need to get serious about NIL.

Normally, I don't mind Feldman, but he's really trying to make entire articles out of a lot of guessing here...

I'll go with John Bacon's Twitter assessment of all this - nobody actually knows save one person.

Just seems like everything is lining up for Harbaugh to coach the Raiders: longtime friendship with the owner; met his wife in Vegas; used to be a coach for the Raiders; has apparently always wanted to coach in the NFL again; has all the leverage he needs to get a big deal.

At this point, I've already accepted that Harbaugh is leaving and am now wondering who we should hire to replace him. I'd be fine with any of these choices: Gattis, Mike Hart, or Matt Campbell. Gattis and Hart would likely keep our staff and recruits in tact and allow us to continue to build off of the successful recipe to last year's success. Bill OBrien doesn't excite at all.

Nothing personal, but I do not understand how Mike Hart can be considered a reasonable choice for the next (as in, very near term) head coach at Michigan.

What's going on? Is it the "Michigan Man" thing? Suggesting that any other RB coach college football should get the Michigan job would get lots of laughs.

Right? I love Hart, but it doesn’t make any sense. He may very well end up a head coach someday and it could be in Ann Arbor at some point, but guys simply don’t go from non-coordinator position coach to head coach at a major program.

I do think they’d want to keep the staff together at this point if Harbaugh leaves though so Gattis, on the other hand, does make sense. He’s been a coordinator, is coming off a really good season as a coordinator, and has received some head coaching interest from other P5 schools. I’d imagine he’d still have a large part in running the offense with Moore getting prompted from co-OC to OC (and maybe Hart gets a co-OC promotion.) That’d probably be the easiest transition as we approach February.

Or Jim could just stay and make everyone happy.

You should be a little more optimistic than this. If the Raiders knew JH was their guy all along, they would have let him know that before Black Monday or at least before they got bounced from the playoffs, i.e. "Don't take any other offers, Jim, you're our guy. Just be patient, let us finish the season, do our obligatory Rooney Rule interviews, and then we'll come to you." All I can tell you is that didn't happen by end of last week. What's happened since then, beats me, I got nothing this week.

"Everything is ling up for Harbaugh to coach the Raiders," except:

1.  They currently have a coach;

2.  The players on the team are openly advocating for him to keep the job;

3.  The Raiders have not requested to speak to Harbaugh nor has he interviewed for the position, which is currently not open and being held by a guy who coached them into the playoffs;

4.  Harbaugh has expressed exactly no interest in coaching that team or doing anything other than run around the country recruiting for us;

5.  Harbaugh is telling recruits "not to worry" (i.e. he isn't going anywher); and

4.  The Raiders would be a terrible place to try to win the Super Bowl as they have two of the top 3 best young QBs in their division and have no chance of winning the division in the near future'

This. The Raiders might be in the best position of the open jobs (if it's even open at all), but I don't know why people think they have a realistic shot at the Super Bowl anytime soon. They're clearly in a tier below the Chiefs, Bills and Titans. Quite possibly all four of the AFC North teams have more upside (Ravens still have Lamar, Bengals are rising, Browns have stockpiled talent, Steelers have been held back by an aging Big Ben they now can replace). The Colts have shown promise, the Chargers have Herbert. Etc. The Raiders aren't a team playing below their talent level, i.e. ripe for a quick fix turnaround (think Tampa with Jameis, or the 49ers team Harbaugh took over). They're a team with the talent to compete for wild card spots, but needing upgrades across the board to be a serious Super Bowl threat. There's a reason people consider those pro teams that hover around .500 to be in purgatory: not good enough to be championship contenders, but too good to get the high draft picks needed to truly rebuild. That's the Raiders in a nutshell...

“He also has family ties to Las Vegas, which is where he met his wife.” This an actual quote in support of this story. With a tip of the cap to Talking Heads, my God, how did we get here?

I won’t believe anything until I hear an announcement from either Harbaugh or the University that a contract has been signed or he has stepped down to accept a position in the NFL. Even if Adam Schefter tweets that Harbaugh and the Raiders have reached an agreement. Until it’s in writing and official, I’m not believing it. Anything less is speculation.

Michigan has had 6 head coaches in my lifetime, and it seems like every year there was either a rumor of one of them retiring (Bo and Carr), being fIred (Moeller, Carr, Rodriquez, Hoke, Harbaugh), or going to the NFL (Harbaugh).  SO yeah, this is just another typical Michigan football offseason.
