This is simply ESPN trolling for clicks. The FBI has been involved in this investigation for months.

The ESPN story also unsurprisingly buries the lede in the last paragraph that there is no relationship between Weiss and the signals story.

You can’t know there is no relationship between the two stories, it would be surprising if they weren’t.   You don’t think Weiss would rat out the school that fired him?  The FBI investigating him makes it more likely, not less likely, that it is related.  Tattoo-gate started over an investigation into a business, the players trading their trinkets for tattoos was unrelated to the original investigation.

Yes, that’s what they said.  Several years ago they also said the investigation into a small local business was not related to exchanging personal trinkets for tattoos.   It was an unintended byproduct of the original investigation.   Do you honestly believe OSU hired a PI and Michigan just willingly gave them access to their computers?
If OSU is involved it will only be if the rumors of Michigan trying to hack into their practice film are true.

This is super old information - it was public information back in February. It has been discussed extensively.  No clue why it is coming up now other than social media frenzy.

So did 11 Warriors and RCMB, they have used the FBI investigation against Michigan for months.

Adam Rittenberg is trolling for clicks.  That's what's going on.  This story is not about a new announcement or a break in the case.  It is about Rittenberg asking if the FBI was still involved, and UM's Deputy Chief of Campus police confoirming that it was, indeed, still involved.

Note the wording:

Deputy chief Melissa Overton confirmed the FBI's involvement to ESPN on Thursday, adding that the investigation is "extensive, ongoing and is of the utmost priority," and covers multiple states.

Note how the reader is left with the impression that Melissa Overton (not otherwise identified) is with the FBI.  Note that she is merely confirming the FBI's involvement, not announcing it.  Note that Rittenberg hides the fact that the case is "extensive, ongoing and is of the utmost priority" TO THE CAMPUS POLICE, not to the FBI.

Then note how, in the first paragraph, Rittenberg writes that the FBI "has joined" the case but doesn't actually say how he discovered this (because he can't, because the FBI joining the case happened months ago).

Shit journalism.

Can you imagine the scrutiny we would be under if we dominated recruiting? Imagine all the "investigations" if we werent the composite average 12 to 14th best team. Hell our school lead in recruiting in one sport for one year (fab 5) and got nuked to oblivion. Maybe Jim recruits under the radar guys for a reason.

Honest question but if we were ranked 20th with 2 losses right now would they of sat on all this shit until "needed"?

Yeah well our AD isnt hocking his shit on facebook marketplace to raise funds to start a smear campaign against them either.

This isnt Harbaugh giving himself the business while on the phone with a SA victim.

This is a coordinated attack with just the right combo of a dipshit AD and a bloodthirsty NCAA thrown in there.

It’s funny how the msu and UM seasons have gone. Shit team and program like msu is pretty likely getting urban as next coach and the wonderful season we’re having will see us getting rid of Jim bc of some nonsense shit. What a joke

sparty getting urban?  be serious.  that is a hole too deep even for that bottom-dweller, not to mention at some point someone in the administration is going to steer them to hire their football version of brian ellerbe to calm the waters and right the sexual assault ship.

there is no smoke.  he has been saying 'rival' ever since his time at ohio, won't call us michigan, etc.  he is a snake, but not a dumb snake.  when put on equal footing in the NFL he got his head handed to him.  when he can cheat, he is good at that.  with NIL and always being second fiddle to our school, he's not going to sparty even if they offered him $15MM/yr, assuming they have alums that are stupid enough to do that for a second time.

Before we get all hot and bothered...

The FBI has been working with the University of Michigan police department “for months” to investigate computer crimes committed by former Wolverines offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia reported Thursday. The university fired Weiss in January after a criminal investigation started.

This is not a new development.

But that's more about Weiss himself remember "what" he was being accused of?  Don't fret about was has already been started.  It's useless.  Remain steadfast like our young players.  If they can do it, so can we!!!  Michigan Wolverines stand up!  Be thankful some of this is over and be strong.  We will eventually be fine.  The bad seeds have not taken root.  You cannot change destiny!

I know this is old news generally & I'm not looking to derail the thread, but can anyone tell me exactly what Weiss was accused of doing that would get the FBI's attention?

When that info came out awhile ago, every source I read was very vague about exactly what the substantive issue was that he was doing w/ the computer. I know the general thing was he had hacked into another person's university account, or was posing as some else by emailing others via that person's email account or something. But I don't recall ever reading what the substantive topic was about that caused him to be basically turbo fired & then investigated by the FBI.

Everybody is blowing past Weiss as the most obvious internal culprit for "sign gate."

I think there's a decent chance this was at least known inside Schembechler Hall and Weiss helped pass the goods on.

Well, not to cast more fuel on the flames, but one could imagine a scenario where the two cases would be unrelated, but someone connected with the case--say Weiss himself--knew about the other and offered up info. Weiss himself, just to conjecture wildly, could himself offer up the knowledge to curry favor in his own case. Not remotely suggesting this is true, but just examining the logic of the assertion.
