Exit: Ben Mason

Off to the Senior Bowl. This was one player who I thought might take advantage of covid eligibility although maybe it wasn't his choice.
He could carve out a role anywhere on special teams or even catch on with teams like the 49ers or Ravens that still utilize a fullback.
Godspeed, Bench.

Additionally, the teams that are part of the McVey/Shanahan coaching trees all use players who can shift between FB/H-Back/off-set TE as part of their heavy play-action sets (Rams, 49ers, Packers, Titans, etc).

He is ready for the right pro team

Was a pleasure to watch. Best of luck and appreciate your intensity!

Loved Bench, from my perspective seemed like the ultimate teammate! Best of luck!

If he doesn’t stick in the nfl somebody should get Vince McMahon this kids #

He’s going to be so good for the Ravens offense next year.

Did Mason even play after the first game?
December 23rd, 2020 at 12:54 AM ^
Yeah, he registered a stat against Sparty and that's it. Don't be a slapdick.
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:25 AM ^
He sacrificed more for this team than any other player I can think since Devin Gardner.
He's got a hell of a future ahead of him.
December 22nd, 2020 at 6:02 AM ^
Maybe he can catch on as a defensive tackle in the nfl.

I'd love to see the Steelers take a chance on him. He could fill the Derrick Watt role.

"With the (insert day 3 pick #), the New England Patriots selected FB Ben Mason from Michigan." BB knows his family and been following Bench since Pop Warner.

I want to see Ben Mason run short yardage plays right through people on Sundays. Those plays were....satisfying when they were allowed to occur.

how much fun would it be to sit in on ben mason's interviews with pro teams as he gets ready for the draft. and i'd be shocked if he didn't nail the wunderlic. i have a feeling those two things will move him up a bunch of draft boards - his intangibles will be sky high. seems like a great kid and has intellect to back up all the fun quirkiness. seen here with his 'you want to interview me? go ahead, give it a shot....' look.

Taxi driver on steroids!
"You talkin' to me?"

Love Ben for his attitude and contributions. Would love to see him get a job in the NFL but I don't share everyone else's confidence. There just aren't that many fullback positions and I think he lacks the speed/versatility to really be an NFL special teams player.
I do think his drive and mindset will lead to a successful career outside of football.

I think Bench's talents were squandered - how he wasn't the every down H-Back is a miscarriage of football coaching. We only saw limited evidence, but the couple of times he ran a route/caught a pass, he looked pretty good at it. God knows his blocking was significantly better than any other H-Back/TE we've had on the roster since, well, I can't really remember anyone better than his natural ability. Panda was good in 2016, but not as versatile as Bench, IMO.
Unfortunately, as with nearly everyone else on offense the last 4 years, he got pigeon-holed into certain plays that became readable by people like me - watching on TV. When he came in, drifted right during the snap count, I knew the RB would take a handoff 5 yards deep and follow Mason through the A or B gap for a 1 yard gain. There was no diversity in how he was used (which is too often used in conjunction with Michigan's offense for the last 4 years).
I hope he finds an NFL team that can figure out how to incorporate his talent into a useful role. He's not just a fullback and/or special teams player.

Kids a stud. Just not the right era. I don’t know what era we are in anymore and don’t remember quality Michigan football.

Good Luck - he will be a good special teams player in the NFL I am sure.

An all time great player in another era. A very entertaining and productive player even in this one.
I hope he gets drafted and has a long career as a specialist in the league.

bummer, but i'm really happy for him. he's going to get a degree from a *great* business school and might have an nfl career. good luck, Michigan Man.

It's a crime what we did to him the last 2 years. This man never complained publicly, and just did whatever the team asked him to do.
Good luck in the future young man, you will be well remembered for how you represented this program.

Go get paid Ben! Good luck! I had a lot of fun watching him play.
December 22nd, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
Mongo sad ...
But now we will get to see Ben on Sundays. Versatile on special teams. In the right offensive scheme, versatile out of the backfield as a classic blocking FB or the multiple-purpose HB. Just defines football, and at every level, but especially so in the NFL where the toughest thrive.
MORE BEN MASON !
Thanks for being a Wolverine. Make us proud in the NFL.

Gotta love The Bench. He wasn't used properly the past few seasons. Maybe because he had a goal line fumble early 2019 season, I don't know.
He also has leadership skills that will be missed.
December 22nd, 2020 at 1:18 PM ^
He may have fumbled because of the switch to...checks notes...fucking DT?! I can’t imagine he did a lot of ball security drills at DT rotation.
December 22nd, 2020 at 11:54 AM ^
I'm not sure where on the list he goes but he's definitely on the list of most over-hyped player in school history by this blog.
December 22nd, 2020 at 1:17 PM ^
He’ll play in the NFL. Harbaugh loves him and I do too. He’s a badass and will find a team that needs a murderface.
December 22nd, 2020 at 1:38 PM ^
Great example to the team - still remember his clinching TD at MSU after the pre-game turf and logo destruction.
Hope he finds the right team in the NFL, whether as a late round pick or OFA.
