Even Pete Finebaum Himself is Defending Jim + OSU changed signs last year before game

Submitted by nickelsarcade on October 20th, 2023 at 11:19 AM

Caught this on ESPN today. When Finebaum is essentially arguing this is a NCAA witch-hunt, you can tell just how widespread whatever Michigan is being accused of doing is.

Also, love this point buried in the newest Yahoo reporting on this situation:

Reading 11W, they are pinging between two equally goofy arguments: this explains Michigan's second-half dominance and this explains OSU's two losses last two years. The funniest thing is when one level-headed 11W points out the obvious (why would this lead to second-half gains rather than Michigan beating them from the jump), the 11W masses are responding that UM purposely didn't deploy the signs until second half to cover up the scheme. You gotta give it to them for idiocy.

In the end, winning cures all.

Yeah right, just really good at stealing signs.

So good at stealing signs the refs called back-to-back holding and unsportsmanlike penalties that absolutely killed a really important second half drive for them.

When Mike Sainristil found himself having to make up a measly 7 yards to get to the end zone and shit on Cade Stover...yeah, obviously he must've known what was coming because it just looked way too easy and he was in perfect position to make that play the entire time.

There must've been something really nefarious about the way UM was getting their information. I simply don't see any other way they could figure out how CJ Stroud would not, under any circumstance (except against UGA), run for a first down (or scramble at all). There's no way of knowing that kind of thing unless you're cheating.

Fuck off with that. Your team played shitty football and that's why they lost.

This is exactly where my brain went when all of this dropped. Even if teams have signs stolen, it's still on the players to execute.

These people would rather believe that Harbaugh is some sort of evil genius, playing 3-D chess with a vast network of spies and conspirators and that he's managed to hide it and keep it under wraps this entire time, rather than simply admit that he's a good coach that's helped turn a program around. It's almost comical that in this day and age, when everybody seems to want a villain everywhere, that they've somehow settled on Jim Harbaugh to fit that role, as opposed to all the other sleazebags out there.

Just wild stuff.

I'm shocked but pleased to hear Finebaum give an honest assessment of the latest anti-Harbaugh crusade.

Aside question: Who wins the conference if..

OSU beats PSU

PSU beats UM

UM beats OSU

I think it comes down to combined records of the teams played in the west division. OSU also plays Purdue and Minnesota, but they play Wisconsin instead of Nebraska. So, unless Nebraska can start winning some games, including @Wisconsin, that would seemingly eliminate Michigan. PSU played Iowa, Illinois, and Northwestern, so it really depends on how those last two do compared to Purdue and Minnesota (since Iowa and Wisconsin are likely to be similar).

This is starting to feel like “Roger Goodell punishes Patriots for the laws of physics.”

Harbaugh is going to be harassed until the NCAA feels like they have sufficiently “gotten” him. Yesterday, he was punished for picking up the tab on lunch. Today, he’s being punished for either 1) adequately scouting opponents ahead of time, or 2) adequately scouting opponents during the game

Tomorrow he’ll be punished for telling his players to get enough sleep. The day after that, he’ll be investigated for substituting too many fullbacks during the game

NCAA - “From here on and henceforth, let it be known that Michigan may not employ, or appear to employ, more than one TE on the field at a time. This includes but is not limited to players starting from the traditional fullback position or traditional TE alignments, WRs lined up or blocking in a manner most commonly related to TE blocking, nor actual OL beyond the traditional 5 OL on the field at the same time.”

Well I can only think of one way to respond. Play the starters more.

How many points did Brady score in the second half of the deflate- gate Indy game versus the first half? Little bitches want to bitch then release the hounds. Scout this M'fers!

An honest assessment of the situation by Finebaum.  It was shocking, but refreshing to see to see him call this out for what it essentially is.  Piling on by a petulant institution.

Do not make the mistake I made this morning.  Do not read Pat Forde’s “article.”  Instead, trust my following in-depth review:  shit sandwich.

This is exactly what I said the MSU fans would say. I guess stealing the signs made two buckeye defenders pause in the UM backfield while JJ was handing off to the Don instead of following their assignments and tackling both guys and getting a TFL on the long run(s). And I guess the sign stealing made their DB's miss tackles and get turned around, leading to some long passing TD's. It definitely wasn't that their dudes missed assignments and whatnot - which if they would've just did what they were supposed to would've resulted in bad plays for UM - nope, it was the sign stealing.

Yeah, as a Columbus resident now, I can see this. They are the strangest combination of still thinking they're superior to Michigan, and hoping they don't get blown out again in November.

Actually, I really enjoy the latter when I talk to OSU friends - I've heard several iterations of "we might not lose by 30 again this year."

But yeah, they're a ridiculous fanbase overall.

You should be changing signals/signs week to week, half to half, even series to series if you feel like you're tipping your hand. The qb and 1 defensive player should also have a headset for direct communication with the coordinators. The signals/signs should mostly be a ruse. This is all very stupid.

I hope this is all distilled in increased resolve by Jim and the players. As fans, I think that the right move is to ridicule and make fun. For the team, the emphasis should be on not getting derailed for a second.

Hey guys, I've heard they are opening up a new investigation against all UM opponents. Apparently, since the beginning of time and especially during the Harbaugh era, teams, coaches, fans, and media have somehow figured out that Michigan is going to run the fucking ball and run the fucking ball a lot until the other team stops it. The investigation is ongoing as to how everyone has the information.

I think a better argument (if I’m playing devil’s advocate) would be that Michigan needed a half to confirm the set of signals they’re using, then in the second half they’d have all the calls figured out.

Irregardlessly, if you really are stealing signs, yeah it’s an advantage, but you’re not really learning that much beyond tendency and situational stuff. The same way Romo can telegraph several plays in a row during a broadcast based on scores, gametime, down and distance.

The Jimmies and Joes still have to make the play even if they know the X’s and O’s.

The NCAA has egg all over their collective faces after Harbaugh a) got away with a 3 game suspension b) made his old man an interim coach and c) got all kinds of good will from the national media by rotating up and coming coaches, giving young talent great opportunities to wear the head coach headset. Now the NCAA is digging around for anything. Partly to get Harbaugh this time, but more so to slime him, so a 2023 Michigan national championship is "tainted".

It is petty and small. Take the L, NCAA.
