ESPN: "MSU Reopens Competition for Starting QB"

Yes, this is relevant to Michigan, even before one of you mouth-breathers says, "Um, derp, why are we always talking about MSU. What iz this, RCMB er sumthing?"

I think there are possible pros and cons to this, with our game with them just 18 days away. This kind of decision made mid-season (especially since it's based on poor performance) is obviously good for us, and it's hard to imagine Terry or Lewerke being fully-ready as a starter in 18 days. But it adds a layer of complexity to prepping for them, I'm sure. Plus, what if Lewerke wins it, we have little to no tape on him, and he sucks way less than the other two options?

Discuss...

EDIT: Sorry for calling everyone mouth breathers. That was uncalled for, I have grown since writing that, and I sincerely apologize...

O'Connor is their best option. He can't overcome bad play calling and line play though because he's very average. Terry can't throw the ball and Lewerke no doubt sounds like a good option to them due to the fact he hasn't proven he isn't good. It's a mess no matter who wins that job.

I kind of think Terry is their best option. The offense has shown that isn't going anywhere with O'Connor, whether that's his fault or not. Terry is probably less accurate and efficient than O'Connor, but he's a better runner. So why not take a chance at chaos and making something out of broken plays, if the plays themselves aren't working with O'Connor?

Although all OCs suck when your Line is a sieve. Terrry gives them the best chance to win against our D because he can make something of nothing on a broken play. Lewerke if they are playing for the future. My guess is Dantonio sells out for his best chance to beat Michigan. Watch for Terry.

Is Terry a better runner? TOC can run a bit too. He ran the option successfully against OSU last year, at TOC and Terry had literally the exact same rushing stats against OSU last year. And if neither back up QB could beat out TOC in camp...well feels like the mid season Gardner/Morris swap under Hoke. Basically scapegoat the QB when the team has holistic badness. They can't run, give up sacks, can't rush the passer, can't cover WRs...lots of badness going on. Terry threw a terrible INT his first drive in against BYU and Lewerke did against UW as well. And TOC is a captain. I think nothing changes, but this is used as a motivational tactic. If they do make a change...ooo boy, that's a gamble with bowl eligibility this year for hopefully better results next year.

The question is what their goals are. If the goal is to try to win this season, you play O'Connor - much as he's sucked, he's better than Terry and you know he's better than Terry, which is why you were starting him over Terry in the first place. If the goal is to say the hell with this year and build for the future, you play Lewerke (or de Weaver), since obviously O'Connor can't be back next year. Unless you're worried about the freshman getting Tim Couched (being ruined mentally by absurdly bad pass protection).

I don't think Terry is a better idea either way because he's not a QB that works in their offense.

He is athletic and is the fan favorite. Don't like his matchup against our defense for Sparty. I think Don Brown will have a very effective plan against him. We will see.

Terry is mobile in the exact same way O'Conner is mobile.  And in the same way Morris is mobile.  Except those guys are white so people assume they're not mobile.  Terry is no Barrett as a runner (in college at least) from what we've seen.  A switch from O'Conner to Terry is adding a few inches in height and less throwing ability to basically the same person as QB.
