ESPN evaluating ButtCam feedback
Failed camera activation
“The ‘floor seat’ camera angle during (Tuesday’s) ‘Super Tuesday’ Michigan-Ohio State game was a new and creative way to show the athleticism and speed of the talented players of the Big Ten Conference by giving viewers different access to the game,” Rachel Siegal, a spokesperson for ESPN, told The News in an e-mail. “We will review all feedback after the game and continue to learn and provide fans with the best possible viewing experience.
“ESPN was built on trying new things and taking risks, and tonight is just another example of that.”
"best possible viewing experience"

I don't know about everybody else, but personally I'm impressed that you managed to capitalize the 'T' while typing one-handed.

To be fair, Michigan's play was far more horrendous than the camera angle.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:03 PM ^
True, maybe they did us a favor
February 17th, 2016 at 2:31 PM ^
I didn't watch the second half. So ESPN spared me watching a horrendous half of basketball.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:03 PM ^
What if ESPN had planned to only use it sparringly, but since Michigan was crapping the bed they decided to keep it going figuring they couldn't possibly make it any worse?
February 17th, 2016 at 3:20 PM ^
Do you really want to give them that much credit?
February 17th, 2016 at 1:02 PM ^
Once again, I take back everything bad I've ever said about BTN.
They have better camera quality and they've never prevented us from concentrating on a game.
Do you know how nuts that thing last night drove people with OCD? I could not concentrate.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:11 PM ^
And they don't have Dan Dakich doing color. I cannot stand him. I used to not like him but it's to the point of straight hate now. Just STFU once and a while!

How many times do I need to hear about how you coached Donnal!
February 17th, 2016 at 1:35 PM ^
Maybe he should stop coaching these guys.

My wife thinks I'm some kind of freak genius at predicting what announcers are going to say. She seems to think I could do it as a career. (Please nobody tell her it's just because they're completely predictable morons.)

Trash, that's all I have to say. If they ever play a game on that camera angle angle, I can at least conclude that they lied about listening to viewer feedback.
February 17th, 2016 at 12:57 PM ^
With all the different ESPN channels and even the CFP NC game offering a bunch of different viewing types, why couldn't they just had a regular broadcast and then promoted this addiitional camera angle all week, and have it available on ESPN3?
EDIT: Someone else said it first.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:39 PM ^
And to boot, why on earth would they blindly commit to a full 40 minutes of this? I would have expiramented with one 4 minute block. Let's try it until the under 16 break. That would have been fine, and it would've given them all of the feedback they needed. From what I saw on Twitter, it took viewers an average of about 5 seconds to realize this was the biggest disaster in televised sporting history.
It was such a bad decision, I'm still not convinced there wasn't a last-minute technical issue that forced this.

should work fine by the time they roll out open mike sideline announcers on both sides of the field for the M/OSU football game Nov. 26............

but yet James Franklin doesn't understand clock managment and ESPN doesnt understand camera angles. Maybe people should invest in an xbox.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:01 PM ^
Theu could have done it for a couple of possessions and still accomplished their goals. After 5 mins of it, we got it.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:06 PM ^
Or had it as an option on ESPN 3. See what feedback they got using it as an option on a web feed without disrupting a national TV audiance.

That quote singlehandedly sums up why people detest marketing folks.

All the money in the world says they don't do that for tonight's UNC/Duke game.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:03 PM ^
Someone may have died if they had the rights to and pulled that stunt during the Iron Bowl.
February 17th, 2016 at 1:06 PM ^
I hear they're institutin a Dickie V cam for that one. No footage of the game, just a close-up of Dick Vitale's face for the entire broadcast.
Innovation!
February 17th, 2016 at 2:31 PM ^
Fox thought of that first with the Khaki Cam.

Well, he also isn't going to submarine his employer live on the air. I'm sure a number of ESPN employees knew how dumb it was and said so after the game.

It was actually the play-by-play guy who kept pimping it...for get his name, Bob something something. Dakich seemed to have the "well, yea it seems neat..?" when mentioning it.
February 17th, 2016 at 2:01 PM ^
For the sake of his soul I hope that Bob was seething on the inside every time he had to pump up that abomination.

the entire unwatchable game.

that means it's done for and whoever came up with and then approved the idea is getting an earful this morning from an ESPN exec
February 17th, 2016 at 1:06 PM ^
Putting a Go Pro on Jake Butt's helmet and broadcasting the game from there on ESPN3 would be a great idea.
In all seriousness, who ever considered this as an even plausably good idea has run out of just that. Innovation my ass. More like a hair-brained concept hatched in the Dave Brandon Family Laboratory of Horrible Marketing Ideation.
On the good side, at least we didn't pay baller prices to sit courtside only to watch the ref's asses. It may have saved us a few dollars down the road...

Sneaker cams? Or maybe play the game on a glass floor with the action being caught from cameras underneath the floor?
