Dylan McCaffrey, 2017 QB prospect, talks about M, Harbaugh

Submitted by M Dude in Portlandia on

Yep, Christian's little brother, who may yet get his 5* rating as a pretty mobile drop-back Pro QB type IIRC, seems pretty positive about JH and especially the A2 atmosphere. A lot to love about this kid, hoping for the best.

Sorry bout the link to these other guys - but he had some good things to say and I haven't seen the interview elsewhere.

He would be a HUGE get for the 2017 class, especially if he commits earlier in the cycle like some believe. With how he speaks highly of Michigan, he could be a great recruiter on his own.

Older brother Max plays for Duke, so it is not a clean sweep for Stanford. If Dylan wants the best place for QB development then Michigan is the place!

Either way, Michigan or Stanford, he will have tough competition ahead of him with Peters and Costello.

would have noticed Stanford's turnaround under Harbaugh, and what happened to the 49ers under Harbaugh and after.  Wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh didn't have a lot of contact with the McCaffrey family while out there, or at least with Dylan's Dad.  And who would he rather have to tutor his QB son?

His film is UNREAL for a kid hsis age.

He's the top Michigan QB recruit I've seen in recent memory. He's got the arm, the touch, the accuracy, the vision to find guys open. He adjusts plays presnap in high school. He's got athleticism.

Just love what he brings to the table.

He supposedly wants to decide early and recruit...I look for him to be a Wolverine by Easter. Stanford is looking at 2 other TOP QBs in next years class.

Harbaugh has been in on McCaffrey for awhile now, IMO, it's not a done deal...but I'd put it just like Rashan Gary where it's Michigan and then everyone else. But with high profile recruits, anything can happen.

kinda unfaithful looking at other QB's so soon after getting Peters so soon. But JH believes in competition and I'm sure he can develop more than one QB at a time.

I imagine we're going to upgrade in the future in a lot of our recruiting if things keep going at the present trajectory.

That kind of mentality got us the Shane Morris Recruiting Strategy: anoint one guy before he's played a down, and recruit no safety blanket. Poor Shane - he's the poster child for so much that went wrong. Regardless of what QBs are on campus, QB recruits are probably taking notice of what Harbaugh did with Rudock. One year as the starting QB ain't bad if that one year sets records/is statistically the second best year a UofM QB has ever had, and gets the guy NFL possibilities. I'll take all the top recruits, thank you.

two years to make his claim to something great. Won't go down as the greatest qb at UM but he could still do some serious damage. I'd love to see it. He can for surely zip it around like Henne did. No taking anything away from O'Korn either because I hope he whoops some serious ass as well.

Agreed. He has a lot he could be bitter about: under-coached, not given adequate chances when "named the starter", concussion-face all over the news, and then immediately surpassed on the depth chart by no fewer than 4 new faces. He's handled it all with admirable grace. OTOH, he wouldn't have stayed if he had no chance to start, or if Harbaugh didn't want him. A little QB whispering, and he could be right back on top. As a QB, he reminds me of a nicer version of Ryan Mallet...much nicer.

correct - depth (and talented depth) is necessary at all spots across the board in order to consistently compete with the best.  not knocking morris but hokes handling of QBs.

cant afford to overlook a position during a recruiting cycle (unless serious contingencies are in place and even then its a risk).

all positions and all 85 / 115 are key to teams success but none more so than QB.  thankfully harbaugh understands the significance of the QB position and acts accordingly (and with an eye always to future).

weve all seen numerous great overall teams littered with future pros suffer due to less than stellar QB play (recent examples of lsu, fla, etc and some of bowdens fsu teams might be best examples - with osu and their 3 QBs in urbans system as the opposite), and plenty of teams seasons have been upended when reserve QBs fail to pull their weight.  naturally theres separation bw 1st and 2nd string but its vital to enter seasons with multiple guys capable of moving chains and winning games.

bring on 1-2 legit QBs each year

None of this bodes well for Gentry, but...

'16 starter: JR O'Korn; backup FR Peters

'17 starter: SR O'Korn; backup RS FR Peters

'18 starter: RS SO Peters; backup RS FR McCaffrey

'19 starter: RS JR Peters; backup RS SO McCaffrey

'20 starter: RS JR McCaffrey (Peters to NFL)

'21 starter: RS SR McCaffrey, assuming he doesn't go to NFL after just one year starting.

'22 ... this is where it gets a little tricky because an '18 blue-chip QB is going to get to start one year at the most. McCaffrey would only have one year as well, if Peters stays five. Stanford may offer a clearer path to more years starting.

But this pattern does bring us back to the parade of solid starters and co-starters of Moorhead, Slade, Franklin, Leach, Wangler, Smith, Harbaugh, Brown, Taylor, Grbac, Collins, Driesbach, Griese, Brady, Henson, Navarre and Henne. The only serious blip in that string was Demetrius Brown going 0-fer against OSU, MSU and ND in '87, but he won his bowl game.

It's a beautiful thing to think about.

but as history shows, O'Korn could end up playing awful and Morris takes over and gets us to a bowl win this year. does that throw a wrench in things? if not, what if Peters turns out to be a bust (God forbid)? I like your break down, it is a good problem to have but talking years into the future is assuming too many possibilities

Of course it would be awesome... but realistically (leaving the homerness behind) I'm still thinking that Stanford is the leader in the clubhouse. Perhaps I'm just self-protecting against disappointment.
