Dueling Daily/State News Columns

The tradition of Michigan Daily v. State News duelling columns continues.  The content is more about the annual touch football game between between the two staffs and the quality of the papers than the game Saturday night, but as always there's some entertaining trash talk.

It feels like every year the Daily one is at least semi-coherently written and has some punch to it and the State News one is just online gaming-level insults and the constant reminder that MSU has a journalism school and UM doesn't, as if UM doesn't produce a ton of people who go into journalism and perhaps belying the irrelevance of a degree to actually being able to perform the job.

Curious. I've read these columns the last couple of years, and they both seem to really go at each other. Are these all tongue in cheek, haha all in good fun columns that the Daily and State News are laughing with each other over as they write them? Or do these people straight up hate each other as their respective columns indicate?

Both columns struck me as overly mean spirited, neither was particularly good (or funny).  Disappointing.  I feel like The Daily column used to rise above the morass.

I thought they were savage but fair, with notes of affectionate razzing. I'd like to see one year where the Daily showers praise on everything the State News is doing, but in a patronizing, "little brother" fashion. I love this series, even if the columns are better some years than others. Incredible that the Daily has won every football game since 2004. Wow.

Don't love the Donovan Edwards jab. That seems like something that should be treated soberly, not mentioned for chuckles in a rivalry piece. And yes, I'd extend that same principle to anyone on the UM side who was making jokes about Nassar or on the MSU side making jokes about Anderson/Bo.
