Dueling Daily/State News Columns
The tradition of Michigan Daily v. State News duelling columns continues. The content is more about the annual touch football game between between the two staffs and the quality of the papers than the game Saturday night, but as always there's some entertaining trash talk.

The Scott Bell column in 2006 will never be beaten.

Found Scott Bell's account.

I'm just impressed somebody at the Daily transcribed the Staee News from its original crayon format.

I swear there was one some years ago where the Daily had to put a disclaimer at the top that they had published the article as submitted to them and the misspellings and incorrect grammar weren't their fault.

haha i remember that!

I thought I remembered this being a bit more light-hearted in past years. They were not taking prisoners in this one.

All of America is, unfortunately, at drawn swords.

i don't think that's really true. 99% of the people i meet or encounter on a daily basis are good people just trying to live the american dream, more than willing to help strangers, kindhearted, etc.

I agree the nutso are amplified, but I think 99% is a bit optimistic. And that doesn't mean the small number of extremists aren't making things awful. Just today some lunatic tried to kill Nancy Pelosi and beat her husband in his home.

scary business. berkely born, castro nudist, 'hemp' salesman. as bad as that encounter was, it could've been worse. yeesh.

what does Berkeley born, Castro nudist, hemp salesman have to do with anything?

Oh, and he was found in his underwear apparently. It has to do with the fact that the guy was absolutely, according to what we used to call the California Penal Code 5150, bat guano crazy. Very glad nothing worse happened.

Why can’t we go back to the days of hurling killer jokes at our political enemies, that way at worst some feelings are hurt and at best SNL has good material for their cold open…

It feels like every year the Daily one is at least semi-coherently written and has some punch to it and the State News one is just online gaming-level insults and the constant reminder that MSU has a journalism school and UM doesn't, as if UM doesn't produce a ton of people who go into journalism and perhaps belying the irrelevance of a degree to actually being able to perform the job.

Curious. I've read these columns the last couple of years, and they both seem to really go at each other. Are these all tongue in cheek, haha all in good fun columns that the Daily and State News are laughing with each other over as they write them? Or do these people straight up hate each other as their respective columns indicate?
October 28th, 2022 at 1:48 PM ^
I think mainly the former with shards of the latter...
October 28th, 2022 at 3:33 PM ^
I suspect it's tongue in cheek. Someone of the alumni of the papers get into on Twitter this week, and it seems like they have fun with it on both sides.

Both columns struck me as overly mean spirited, neither was particularly good (or funny). Disappointing. I feel like The Daily column used to rise above the morass.

I thought they were savage but fair, with notes of affectionate razzing. I'd like to see one year where the Daily showers praise on everything the State News is doing, but in a patronizing, "little brother" fashion. I love this series, even if the columns are better some years than others. Incredible that the Daily has won every football game since 2004. Wow.
October 28th, 2022 at 3:02 PM ^
Agree, both honestly terrible this year.
October 28th, 2022 at 2:38 PM ^
I thought they were a reasonably fun read. You could really tell which author is in college and which one is at staee.

Don't love the Donovan Edwards jab. That seems like something that should be treated soberly, not mentioned for chuckles in a rivalry piece. And yes, I'd extend that same principle to anyone on the UM side who was making jokes about Nassar or on the MSU side making jokes about Anderson/Bo.
