Drive Chart: O'Korn vs. Peters

Submitted by DM2009 on

This is mostly a duh, but I wanted to post the drives for O'Korn and Peters in the Rutgers game.

O'Korn:

  • 7 plays, 27 yards, punt
  • 3 plays, 11 yards, INT
  • 13 plays, 80 yards, TD
  • 3 plays, 1 yard, punt

Peters:

  • 8 plays, 77 yards, TD
  • 7 plays, 49 yards, TD
  • 4 plays, 54 yards, TD
  • 11 plays, 47 yards, missed FG
  • 2 plays, 61 yards, TD
  • 11 plays, 52 yards, downs
  • 3 plays, 7 yards, punt

Rutgers caveats, obviously, but that is a huge difference. Only drive Peters had were we didn't get a first down was the garbage time drive at the end. Every other drive besides that led us into a spot where we should get points.

Peters' final stat line also reminds me of the stats Speight was putting up last year when we were bludegeoning teams. Enough to keep the defense honest and let the run game go wild. Considering our improved run blocking, all our QB needs to do is keep the safeties from sprinting downhill at the snap.

I'm really having a hard time not getting excited about his performance. It was exactly what we needed.

Peters did what he needed to do in order to extend drives, which was not much. O'Korn did not make those plays and killed the drives. The running game was the reason for the win, but Peters was the key to allow Michigan to run so much.

Harbaugh pulled the plug on him and put in Peters. The offense came to life and Rutgers had to respect the passing game. We’ll see how he does against Minnesota and Maryland. Things look encouraging and I expect he will do well. Harbaugh gave JOK a fair shot at being the man. It just didn’t work out well for him.

As I don’t read other team’s fan blogs I don’t know if other fans do the same, but man o’man can Michigan fans turn positives into negatives. Yes, it’s ok to question Harbaugh, and no he’s not “our god.” But, if you’re going to question someone’s job performance, it might be good to have a) at least some similar/relevant skill; b) some data upon which to base one’s critiques; and to expound upon b) something other than emo fan lamentations. I don’t think anyone would be shocked to find out that Harbaugh has wanted to get Peters into the starting spot as quickly as posisble. He his guy and he’s got the higher ceiling. But, as MM said on the broadcast yesterday, there’s nobody in the business who knows his roster bettter than Harbaugh. Did he make a mistake in not inserting BP into the MSU, was IU, and PSU games? Only based upon hindsight — and even that is far from difinituve. It’s equally plausible to see the opposing view: i.e., the mistake was the decision to put him in, not keep him out. We have to defer to the expert. As he said, nobody thinks about this more than him and his staff. Further, nobody has more experience and first hand data than him. Does that make him infallible? Of course not. But coach’s comment, “it’s time ...” is telling. It points to the fact that there was finally a confluence of factors — BP’s performance in practice, JOK’s performance in both practice and games, and the schedule — that made it time. Before that, one of more those factors being different made it not time.

My only concern is that O'Korn also charted way better than Speight against Purdue, so I'm concerned about whether he'll sustain that success against better defenses. I think he will but I'm going to reserve judgement until Minnesota.
