I’d rather see him get close to even carries and a lot more catches. Corum isn’t the receiver Edwards is. Last year at least, Edward’s wasn’t the runner Corum was. Let’s play the best players

This is exactly right. Donovan shouldn't even want to play RB as much as Blake and get "even snaps" when Blake is at RB and Donovan is at a slot WR. He'll get more money in the NFL if he can get his designation as a true "athlete" that can do more for the team, thinking Deebo Samuel like.

I'm not saying no snaps at RB, but I would say half of what Blake gets and the other half at WR.

Let's think about the numbers therein.  If Blake gets 20 carries per game, and Donovan gets equal touches, then that's 40 plays per game between those two players.  In 2022, Michigan ran 70.5 plays per game (ranked 61st out of 131 teams).  Is 30 plays per game spread amongst all the other players meeting the standard of "spreading the love"?  Or do we try to run more plays and go more up-tempo?

EDIT:  I don't have an opinion, just stating a hypothetical mixed in with facts from last season's offense.

I honestly feel like we were building up to that last season for the OSU game and playoffs, but then Corum got hurt.  I think in one of our red zone trips that worked we ran something with Mullings and Edwards, but with the two of them in the backfield opposing teams would be screwed.  Especially since Corum can catch screens and make you pay (as can Edwards) but Edwards can flat out run WR routes.

I think we will see some packages during Big Ten season where Edwards is in the slot and Corum is in the backfield, but for the biggest games (PSU, OSU, msu) we might see some really exotic packages.  Would love to see on second and short a package of OL and JJ, Corum, Edwards, Loveland, Barner, and a WR (Wilson, Johnson, Cleamons).  Good luck.

I think even carries makes sense for most of the competition on the schedule.

Even touches makes more sense against PSU, MSU, OSU - Blake is still the best down to down back, and Edwards can be a home run threat as RB and WR.

Embarrassment of riches.  Let’s put teams away earlier please so these guys are well rested for the toughest games and avoid injuries

In the michiganinsider article that came out this weekend, he stated that he plans on leaving next year.

The article said “I’m just trying to go to the League after this year,” he said. “Trying to get drafted first round after this year. It’s in God’s plan for me — whatever that may be. If I have to come back another year, that’s God’s plan for me. My plan right now is to go to the NFL after this upcoming year.”

It's refreshing to see someone so upfront with their plans.  Certainly not required, but it helps when planning for the future.  It does concern me though, if Don's plan is to be a first round pick after next season there's gonna be a lot of pressure on the Michigan staff to give him enough touches to be in that category.  It's extremely difficult to be drafted in the 1st round at RB these days and the ones that have recently (only 4 in the last 4 drafts, all picked 21st or later) were clear-cut number 1 RBs in college.  I don't doubt Edwards has the skills to be a 1st round pick but not sure if the opportunity will be there next year.  I think he was clearly hoping for Corum to go pro after this year.

I don't think it will be an issue next year as Edwards and BC seem tight but it will be something to keep an eye on as the season advances.  Thankfully they are both different style RBs and can be used situationally and on the field at the same time.

Can you?

Title of article:  "Michigan RB Donovan Edwards updates injury, wants ‘even’ carries next season"

Actual quote in article:  “I can’t speak for what’s going to happen, but I could see it being more even,” Edwards said.

Edwards clearly expresses confidence in his abilities throughout, and thinks he merits playing time, but the title is just baiting you into "reading between the lines."

“I’m excited (for him) — but at the same time, it has its positives and negatives,” Edwards said of Corum’s return. “I wanted to see him go to the NFL; I didn’t want him having another 250-plus carries on his body. That’s putting stuff on him. I don’t want to see that. I want to see him get paid right away.”

To me, this is the part that is open to interpretation.

And that’s a great plan. Run Corum next year like this and he may go undrafted, or at best a last day guy. In todays landscape there’s no need against the likes of Indiana or Rutgers to wear a kid down like that. Not to mention the shit show that transpired against TCU and Harbaughs pissing contest with the rush. JJ flinging the ball all over hells half acre should be plan A, then impose your will running them over.

I think it’s both.  One, concern for corum , but two, he’s definitely making it clear he expects more carries and at least 1-A rb if not co 1 instead of 2 like he was this year.

agree he can and should be used more receiving than past but he wants his carries as well.
I think the team is good enough and the culture strong enough to get him what he needs and keep everyone happy.

TBF, the Don wasn't THE DON! until the last part of the season - and not just because of opportunities.

His patience really improved last years as the season wore on.  I remember thinking in 2021 and early 2022 that he left a lot of meat on the bone on some carries and often rushed into the lanes or his cutbacks.  He definitely started to see the blocking better around the PSU game last year than anytime prior (tbf those holes were absurd), and the patience was key.

I'd expect a lot more of a shared load next year and it has been earned.

I'm no power 5 head coach, but I'll never understand why we were running Corum so late in the Nebraska game. You can't equate 1:1 that Corum running in garbage time on the hollow shell of the Cornhuskers led to an injury later...but also there's zero reason to put those miles on him

Hopefully both Jim and Mike Hart can learn from overworking Blake Corum. Donovan can get more carries and then Cole Cabana can get some meaningful snaps. What the coached need to learn is the season is a marathon, it's 12 regular season game plus the B1G game, assuming they get there and then there 1 or 2 CFP games for a 15 game season.

It will be important early in the season when the game is at hand to give both Blake and Donovan a rest. There's enough plays for both of them to eat. They can both be stars and have gaudy stats this coming season.

"Hopefully can learn..."

This is like saying I hope they learn they need to open up the offense for more passing yards, or hopefully learns to pick up the pace near end of first half on drives etc.

These are features of Harbaugh, not bugs.  He is 60 - this isn't changing.

Yes, and I don't think that Corum's coming back because he wants to be ground into oblivion. Edwards showed some signs that he CAN be a heavier-duty back than had maybe been assumed, and they're both a year older and smarter next year.

What I hope to see is a really diversified offense that demonstrates a) the creativity of the staff and b) the talent across the squad.

"a) the creativity of the staff"

From a run game standpoint, that's awesome.  But from a pass game view, ugh...  There is no pass-centric coach on staff, so this worries me some.  Both Moore and Weiss are run game specialists.  I think only Bellamy - having been a WR - has any pass experience, and he doesn't seem up to coordinating a pass game.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I haven't been overly impressed with his WR's yet - I like 'em all, but there isn't a standout at any position.  Maybe that's the player, maybe its the coach.  Lot of players have come around since he became the coach...

I do think they missed some of the cohesion between run and pass they could've had with a pass-coord.  It's too bad that Gattis couldn't work with the guys, he had some really fun concepts that have never really been developed.  (Heh - they weren't developed at Miami, either...)  Hopefully, a pass game coordinator will be added prior to Spring practice.  I'd love to see a well developed passing game integrated into the awe-inspiring run game.

It was insane to keep running him in games like MSU & Nebraska once it was out of hand. Like I get that the defense is showing two high so you just run the ball. But like maybe throw the ball every now and again so JJ can get some reps (so he isn’t throwing pick 6s in the CFP) and you keep wear off Blake & Edwards. We have no problem running into stacked boxes but allergic to throwing the ball on any sort of deep safety look.

1VaBlue1

January 17th, 2023 at 12:14 PM ^

You don't have to throw deep, though!  There are so many ways to throw the ball while avoiding 2-deep covers...  Short throws - slants, outlets, screens.  There are intermediate throws down the seam, curls, drags, wheels...

All of these are available with JJ's arm - and they can be thrown to any WR, slot ninja, TE, or RB Michigan routinely puts on the field!  Integrate those concepts with the run game, run them from running formations and run from throwing formations.  This offense - the parts that JH has assembled - would be straight death if he opened it up in a controlled way.  No need to go 'bombs away' all the time, like a Big 12 outfit.

I'm not sure I like the tone here but get it.... I think it will sort itself out with Edwards in the slot a lot and Wilson moving outside. The odd man out and one to watch out for being unhappy going to be Henning. Edwards plays more snaps then Corum on season but Corum more at true RB.

Proposed plan:  SCORE MOAR POINTS

Implementation methodology:  Use Corum.  Use Edwards.  Use JJ.  Use CJ.  Use Wilson.  Use Loveland.  Use all the other WRs.  Deploy OL of doom.

I think it could work guys.
