Did Don Brown change game plan for Hudson?

Submitted by Yessir on

Is Hudson coming on related to Bush slight drop off? I'm not a big X's and O's guy so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bush was playing off the charts for the first part of the season.  Hudson playing off the charts now.

It seemed like Sparty Offense schemed Bush out of the box a little bit and other teams found ways to block him.  So did Don Brown adjust and get Hudson in the backfield more? Did DBrown adjust what he's doing with Hudson after Bush's slight drop off?

Or is this just football where Bush had some great games early and Hudson is having some great games now?

I'm glad you brought this up. That comment was the absolute turning point in my hatred of the announcers. My 10 year old daughter asked why I was making fun of the announcers at that point. I said, "Well Hudson is about 6 foot, 205 and Clowney is about 6'5" and 270 pounds." I didn't need to say anything else... my 10 year old understood.

I know they said a crapload of dumb stuff that everyone has cited including the Kinnel-Mettelus kerfuffle, PJs cool new kicks with all 23 of the MN Ws in the series, a bunch of other Fox BS but Brando & Tillman didn't get me as aggravated as some others.  I guess the bar has been sufficiently lowered for me that unprepared, inaccurate and ignorant announcers are the norm instead of the exception.

I did notice Brando owning up to being a dumbass about the depth chart.  Once the game was out of hand and many may have tuned out.

I mostly muted them. I unmuted and I think I heard Brando talking like he knew Bo really well?  I just muted again.

I can't listen to 3 hours of nonsense to get a couple of gems of decent info.  I watch game and then hit the interwebz for analysis.

Others are far more competent than me to speak to this, but since you're mostly getting (well-deserved) announcer snark, I'll step in with a few thoughts:

1) 4 DL vs. 3-3-5. Earlier in the year, 3 DL was set up to allow Furbush and others to attack the line and create holes for Bush. With 4 DL, it puts Hudson in the same situations that Peppers had last year but one less unknown attacker to help Bush thrive.

2) I saw a lot of Bush blitzing up the middle against Minn, and Minny was trying to avoid that by running outside--straight into Hudson. It's a pick-your poison situation.

3) On many of the runs, Hudson was left unblocked--again, a pick your poison. It may be that the hope was that they could run away from him, get him caught up in the wash, or he'd miss tackles. They bet...poorly.

and again, Brian should get into it in the UFR, but the past two games even as we've run mostly 4 man fronts, Hudson has largely been taken out of the run game because he's been covering TEs.

That had been a concerted effort by PSU and Rutgers to get him out of there by sending TEs on routes even on running plays.

I don't know if we took Hudson off TEs in coverage or if Minnesota just didn't use the threat (or if we ignored it since they have no passing game).

It was either a change in assignment from DB or the opponent not forcing him into coverage like previous opponents have done.

EDIT: In the game summary column, Brian says "Don Brown loves Hudson's blitzing so much that he was willing to put linebackers on the outside to keep him in the box. That is no longer possible."

So yes, DB was willing to put LBs in coverage for this game because the pass was barely a threat.  I assuming he also says that's no longer possible because there will be a threat in the future, but given Maryland's passing game, I would expect a similar gameplan.

Unfortunately, OSU's TE's and RPO game is good enough that we don't want McCray out in coverage.

This only worked bc Minny had no TE or RB passing the threat. I checked the UFR for PSU and best I can tell we couldn't do this bc PSU had 3 WRs and often RB or TEs going out. Somehow, OSU was able to send in extra guys at the mesh point vs PSU and destroyed there zone read for the most part. Not sure why we could not.

At the beginning of each week, before the defensive game plan is installed, they draw one name out of a hat. That individual is told he wont have any responsibilities, and is excused from all game prep. "See ya Saturday " Don Brown yells as everyone cheers them out of the meeting room.

and much less coverage responsibility.  minny wasn't accounting for him with blockers either, thus his big, big day.

I was very curious about this as well. I have to admit, I think Bush and Hudson are practically symetical in style and play but ARE undersized for "traditional" LBs. I felt that Rutgers and Penn St saw this and planned around size mismatches (look at the tape, several times Bush or Hudson get moved out of the play or pushed back). I think Don is showing the versility this defense has and let Hudson loose this past game. Will be interesting to see how Wisonsin and ohio state game plan for the Dynamic Duo of Bush and Hudson.

Question. I don’t know shit about online betting, but Michigan opened at a 14 point favorite over Maryland. If I bet 100 dollars on Michigan to win by more... how much money would I win?

Thanks

Typically point spread games are on a -110 basis, meaning that you'd win $100 on a $110 bet (or $90.91 on your $100 bet).  Some online books may give you -105 after the point spread, meaning you'd win $100 on a $105 bet (or $95.24 on $100).

It's more common to see these numbers on the money line, which is wagered without a point spread.  I'm currently seeing -670/+530 on vegasinsider for this game.  That would mean that you'd need to be $670 to win $100 on Michigan to win straight up (no point spread), whereas a $100 bet on Maryland would win $530 (again, no point spread).

Anytime you're looking at odds and you see a negative number, it's the amount you'd have to wager to win $100; if you see a positive number, it's the amount you'd win on a $100 wager.

People are starting to run trips on one side to neutralize Bush from rushing the QB and filling the holes.

Mich St did this and now all teams are starting to do this somBush has to cover a Wr/TE
