DC: Promote from within & keep the chemistry

Submitted by massblue on

I prefer to promote  from within.  You will never know how an outside DC would work with the rest of the coaches.  Jackson should be promoted to DC and then bring a top notch LB coach.  Manning would be fine.  There are many others.

looked great until they gave up 26 points and almost lost to Hoke and Ball State, then had tOSU run right up the middle for substantial gains, followed by USC and Calvin Johnson embarrassingly hammering Morgan Trent and UM in the Rose Bowl. I liked Ron English too, but there are many other candidates with far less baggage and equal or better qualifications that want the job.

Sounds great if Jackson has the x's and o's ability and experience needed to be a great DC.  It's likely that none of us knows, so maybe we should just look forward to whoever Jimmy brings in.  For some reason, I am not dreading his choice.

on a defensive staff that has only been together less than a year and none of them had ever worked together before. They seemed to handle that just fine. Jackson has a very thin resume to be a DC. Why not hire a proven DC or someone clearly ready to move up?

Promoting from within sounds neato and all, but it diminishes a major strength of this staff and does so with at least one but potentially two positions simultaneously. Excepting Zordich and Jaybaugh everyone on staff is until now supremely overqualified for their position. Why sacrifice that "just because, like, niceness, man?"

Putting Jackson at DC puts someone merely qualified at that position. And then what are the odds we find another excellent NFL DB coach to replace him? I suppose former NFL DC G-Matt could be overqualified for DC, but not as overqualified as he is for DL coach, and which former NFL DC will you find for that job?

Think that Mattison will be named interim AD for a year. I think the players respect him and will play for him. I don't see the need to introduce another voice into things right now. We have the personnel to have a great defense next year if healthy. Roll with him until 2017. I don't know about recruiting ramifications though.

I think he's done fine here coaching DBs, but if you're looking for a young DC that won't leave, you're aiming too low. Hire good young coaches that will be in demand like Durkin and replace them with someone similar. Just hope they stay a little longer. Either that or find an older proven DC that is likely to stick round.

Or because the defense was decimated by injuries, playing with a legitimate talent/athleticism/development gap relative to their last opponent, and the coordinators tried a scheme experiment that failed. D looked good against all teams but 2 this season and included 3 shutouts. Yes, the scheme for OSU was bad, but man, I'm pretty happy with how Durkin did his job. If he did a good enough job to get invited to an HC position in the big ten, that's great. Glad we have assistants that do a good enough job to be sought after. It's a refreshing change.

Zordich has 6 years of experience at DB coach. Greg Jackson has 13 years of experience as a position coach, but he was an assistant DB coach for Harbaugh at SF before coming to Michigan. I don't really see either of those guys being considered qualified enough to take over as DC for Michigan next year. Mattison could do it, but I think he'd have been coordinator this year if they thought he was the right guy for the job. At this point, if we promote from within, I'll be slightly disappointed.

Sometimes the people on your staff aren't as good as the last guy and you need to bring in someone with experience running it before. Greg Jackson and Zordich haven't been here long enough for us to know whether they would be good enough to run the entire defense. Look at the drop off in MSU's defense from Narduzzi this year to people already on their staff.

at Larry Johnson at OSU. He's a tremendous DL coach and recruiter. Taking him from OSU would be nice. We could move Mattison back to LBs and he's available to help out a new DC.

I prefer to trust in Harbaugh and not random internet guys preference.

I prefer the BEST possible candidate, and I'm sure Harbaugh does too which is why I think he will go outside the program and I think he should.

I'm not really worried. He can only poach people for his offensive cordinator or defensive cordinator position from our position coaches because coaches aren't going to leave Michigan for a lateral job at Maryland. Jim Harbaugh will upgrade from those he loses.
