Dave Brandon on Attack Each Day podcast

Submitted by crom80 on August 20th, 2019 at 11:43 AM

currently listening to the recent Harbaugh's podcast with Dave Brandon as an invited guest.

I though JH didn't like Brandon? or maybe just as an AD.

haven't finished listening and haven't got to the portion talking about Brandon's time as AD.

but surprised to see Brandon to be invited to the podcast.

I don't recall anyone (in Endzone, or not) saying JH didn't like Brandon.  Just that JH didn't think Brandon showed him enough respect, nor did he think DB would have let him run the program.  It's generally believed that Harbaugh just didn't want to work for such an egotistical jock strap like Brandon.

Seriously - if Warde Manuel wanted to watch every film session with Harbaugh, and offer critiques and suggestions, how long do you think Jim MF'ing Harbaugh would be Michigan's coach?

I would buy a ticket to hear that conversation.

Warde: Hey Coach, I would like to sit in the film session with you and the boys, maybe I’ll be able to help.

Coach: [not sure what he would say, but it would be both biblical and Tarantino at the same time.  The end result being Warde would not be sitting in]

If we are entirely honest, 90% of DB’s problems at Michigan really go back to Brady Hoke. The implosion of the football program under Hoke ultimately amplified Brandons negatives and negated his positives. He went from a vaguely dislikable person with a questionable management style to a cartoon villain primarily for that reason.

Hoke had nothing to do with most of Brandon's antics.  It's not like he put up the Rape Noodle (among other things) because it gave Borges a tactical advantage.

Hoke helped get Brandon fired, sure, but Brandon was anything but "vaguely dislikable" or "questionable".  The guy's leadership style checked off every warning sign of a dysfunctional sociopath fiefdom.  If anything Hoke was a blessing because it made Brandon's faults impossible to hide, but it was inevitable because Brandon hired Hoke for all the reasons that ensured his demise.

i respectfully disagree- Brake Hoke and the Shane Morris incident was just the nail in the coffin

Other than being a completely tone deaf AD here is what comes to mind/why i personally was ecstatic to see him go.

-Brandon jacked up student tickets by something like 70% causing thousands of student to just drop their tickets

-the whole quit drinking and go to bed emails
-The coca cola promotion that was completely bogus/pulled

I feel like i am missing a bunch more but this is just off the top of my head.

The emails as well as the Coke promotions were directly linked to the failures of the football team. And no one would even remember ticket price increases if the team had been successful in that time frame.

I wasnt happy with Brandon, but none of that crap detailed in Bacons book would have become a major subject of discussion beyond staff inside the university if the team had won 11-12 games and beat OSU.

They did ...one year out of three. And Brandon didnt really become an issue until results tanked.

All the internal organizational stuff involving Brandon wasnt known or discussed by fans. 9 out of 10 times people know and care little about the work of an AD.

It exploded in terms of its perceived importance when it became obvious Hoke wasnt the answer and it didnt look like Brandon was in tune with the fan base on the next steps to take. Lets be real here, Hokes tenure went from “Michigan is back” to “holy shit we are in trouble” almost as fast as the Charlie Weis tenure in South Bend. The consequent near panic about Hokes future, the possibility of him being retained or replaced by a subpar option places Brandon in the crosshair of the torch and pitchfork carrying fanbase.

Those emails Brandon responded to weren’t written to complain about Brandons organizational approach..they were written by upset football fans.

Dave Brandon did a lot of good things here but he screwed up the most important part of the job.

He is responsible for the facilities building boom of the 2010s here. He extended Beilein when many wanted him canned, hire Bakich, Dr. Marcelo Leonardi of Water Polo, Mike Bottom as W Swim coach, Chaka Daley of M Soccer that eventually did work out after a bad start.

I would say the Big Ten Network and other TV money is what drove (and drives) the building boom.  Guys like Brandon (to his credit) Martin, Hackett and Manual are spending the money, not creating it.  A nod also to the administration and trustees, who allowed this to happen,

Was DB responsible for the Car Wash in the football locker room? If so, they should name it after him.

Honestly do not give a flying fuck what this chucklefuck as to say about anything, let alone football or the University of Michigan.

This guy is a giant bag of dicks.

Some dudes in life seem to constantly be fuck-ups and yet somehow fall upwards.   How he sucked Toys R Us dry to the tune of millions of $$$ while the company itself burned around him is beyond me.

Everywhere he goes, everything dies - except him.  He leaves enriched and unscathed.

I'll say it again - screw Dave Brandon.

Toys 'R' Us CEO David Brandon receives a base salary of $3.7 million, but according to bankruptcy records, the retailer wants to put more money in his pocket.

Not only did the Wayne, New Jersey company look to give Brandon a $2.8 million retention bonus just before filing for Chapter 11 protection in September, it also asked for court approval of up to another $12 million in incentive bonuses for Brandon.

explain it to me though clown- seeing as it’s beyond me.

I can’t wait for you to regale me with your brilliance and your amazing business mind!

You have to pay that kind of money for execs to oversee a sinking ship.  Otherwise, nobody worth their salt will sail that ship and a rudderless bankruptcy doesn't go over well in court and even worse for creditors.

It sucks.  The appearance of making $3.7MM for tanking a company is a horrible look.  But without continuity at the C-level, things go sideways really, really, quickly.

Vinny The Microwave

The $3.7M salary is one thing

It’s the $14M in bonuses he took as the ship sank and the hourly workers got nothing (until they finally won a lawsuit recently and will all share a pot of $2M)

The multi-millionaire could have redirected that $14M to the workers to help them, but nope, he took it all for himself.

Dave Brandon branded himself as man of all michigan fans (aka the WOW factor) all while fucking us over the barrel with exponentially increasing ticket prices, concessions, and eroding fan environment. Then when anyone provided him with Brandon with some constructive criticism, they were fired if/demoted if they were university employees or told to quit drinking and go to bed. People like him never admit failure and blame others for their failings.

Plus he applied the same heartless,  heavy handed slash and burn tactics used in the corporate turnaround textbook in the Michigan athletic department. He instituting large quotas of turnover simply for the sake of doing it, eliminating droves of quality people who made up the fabric of the Michigan athletics family, and replaced them with morons who embarrass the university with skywriting stunts.

My take on Brandon has always been that he was both good and bad as an AD and as a person. He is undeniably arrogant. He focused on the bottom line too much at times while running a department that's only partially a business. Anything that relies so much on donations and has to spend its profits is not a true business. Anything that takes in that kind of money has to be run somewhat like a business. He's far from the only AD to struggle with what's clearly a difficult job.

Brandon didn't focus on his own bottom line. He sacrificed a lot of money to take the AD job and he truly cares about the school. I think he was actually a pretty decent AD, not great mind you, with one big exception. He wanted to be way too involved in the football program. I wonder if that would have been different if he hadn't been a former player. In any case, he meddled too much and not too well. You can't be the AD at Michigan and screw up the football program, even with a better personality.

I am confident that if Brandon had stayed as AD, the Big House would not still be (uniquely) free from advertising.

I was at the Barcelona soccer game and they had small, portable video boards ringing the field with ads on them. They were fairly unobtrusive but it was definitely jarring to me. It really highlighted how special our usual ad-free environment is, especially compared to certain stadiums (cough...Spartan Stadium...cough) where every square foot of space seems to be festooned with ads.

In my opinion, his blind nepotism combined with huge salary increases for his hand-picked cronies sticks out the most to me.  It was consistent and clear from the very beginning.  He would fire people who had been in the department for years, were loyal, and were likely underpaid, just because they disagreed with him.  And he would replace them with people who were from barely comparable backgrounds, didn't care if this was Michigan or Ohio State, and for a much higher salary.

Bacon's last book detailed so, so many of these situations.  Brandon's bully "agree with me or else" attitude did more damage to that department than most other things, in my estimation.  That type of leadership makes me sick.

I agree with your first point, but I think the second point has been twisted a little bit. He fired a lot of old-time staffers who got way too comfortable in their jobs. I have direct experience that the old AD was too "old boys club," and not very progressive.

Not saying that about everyone, but he did try and make the AD more 21st century too quickly and too corporately. Being loyal and there for a long time doesn't mean that you get tenured on your position. The idea that they handled it poorly in some cases though, I absolutely agree with--his handling of Jon Falk though was deplorable and I'm glad Michigan righted that wrong.

I do not care to get into the weeds of exactly what Brandon did or not do. Most people are complex and do both good and bad things.

If you were paying any attention at all at the time, you would plainly see that Dave Brandon was (and probably still is) an unpleasant individual who does not deserve much regard or respect.

I am surprised by the number of comments on here trying to either be revisionist or make excuses on his behalf.

For those saying that we should begin to accept him as a former player, AD, regent, alumni, etc., I would be fine with that, but he has to take the first step. Did he apologize for his persistent, offensive behavior on the AED podcast? No?

Then there is no rehabilitation to begin.

Interacted and met with him several times and he definitely bleeds Maize and Blue. Actually, I was there for the last week on his job when he knew he was going down. He had a very different private persona that he never showed. Never really understood that the job wasn't about him and his love for Michigan-- was too forward-facing and acted like it was his fantasy camp. But he fundraised like crazy and spent a ton of money to improve all sports, not just football.

The problem is that he flexed his powers in weird ways and was too corporate when he knew damn well that Michigan was never going to kowtow to corporatization. He was too reachable to some folks, but oddly distant from others. He meddled in stuff that no AD needs to be doing, but let other departments reign unchecked.

At the end of the day he was a terrible fit for AD, but he still can be a proud Michigan alum. Michigan fans don't need to forgive him, but no need to tapdance on his grave. He's got a boatload of money so he'll be fine, but he loves Michigan and it broke him that he failed so epically.

How we escaped his tenure without that beautiful football stadium getting tagged with some hollow corporate moniker is beyond me. He was a mediocre AD at a place that does not take well to mediocrity. But, he’s gone, let’s all just move on.
