Dantonio Being Mentioned as Possible Les Miles Replacement

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

LSU is about to go through its own version of "It's Happening," and I've been spending the day looking at all the speculation on who will replace Les Miles. Houston's Tom Herman is at the top of the list, of course, just as he will be for Texas, Auburn and USC. Bobby Petrino is also getting a lot of run.

What I find interesting, though, is that multiple LSU reporters and national guys are speculating that Mike D'Antoni could be in the mix. Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports had my favorite explanation as to why Dantonio might be the guy - to get away from Harbaugh.

This columnist from the Baton Rouge newspaper also lists Dantonio among the 10 candidates for the job.

I think Saban and Miles have elevated the status of the LSU job considerably.  Agree with you on LSU not being that great pre-Saban.  Lately though rhe state of Louisiana has become a recuiting hot bed.  Take a look at the make up of LSU's roster - the vast majority of kids are from Louisiana.  On top of that Houston is only about a 3.5-4 hour car ride away.  If you're an above average recruiter, you should be able to pull in darn good classes year in and year out without having to travel very far.

LSU was a middle of the pack, SEC team, with an occasional flirtation with glory - Billy Cannon years and a few others. Youngsters today think they are a Blueblood. Not the case. If they want to maintain the level of play they've enjoyed under Saban and Les in his prime they best be careful.

Why would LSU offer someone who

  • Is 61 years old with documented heart problems
  • Has never coached in the SEC West
  • Has never recruited a player out of Louisiana
  • Has never beaten Bama
  • Has two daughters enrolling at the school he is coaching at

Joe Alleva is signaling to his constituents that he will leave no stone unturned.  Dantonio's agent is trying to get a conversation with Joe Alleva to pitch one of his clients.  Mork is lending his name to satisfy both fronts.

I think the question of who's on LSU's list is a hard one to answer. Lots of improbable names get mentioned because everyone past Herman and Fisher is improbable. LSU is willing to pay for a big name coach, but in order to get one they have to flip someone who's probably content where they are. Either that or hire Art Briles.

Not going to happen. Mork is going to die at MSU (many years from now). He doesn't appear to have aspirations beyond MSU and it's a safe job for him to hold on to. LSU isn't worth the risk, look at Burt and Arkansas (vs Wisconsin). Once you're in a power 5 job, you really shouldn't move unless it's your dream job. Even then, it rarely works out. Just ask Lane Kiffin.

I actually had this conversation with a friend today about LSU/other programs for Mark D. Having a daughter at MSU complicates things, but IMO things are just going to get worse at State for him. He's going to have trouble competing against Jim/Urban. Now he's stuck competing with Wisky/Penn State/Nebraska/Iowa. His program doesn't seem to have a good QB in waiting, he lost Narduzzi/his great secondary. If he doesn't leave soon his desirability will sink.

I think he goes pros. Plays a lot of sets, runs a pro offense, looks like he has a pro attitude. Could maybe get Narduzzi to leave and be his D coordinator.

LSU - he's stuck trying to compete against Bama, UGA, Florida etc... (same Big10 problem).

Interesting - ND. If Kelly gets fired he can take an independent team and use the Catholic HS network/catholics to get better classes than MSU. Won't need to compete against Urban/Harbaugh and ND has a lot of money compared to MSU. (Also doing my grad school at ND I honestly would prefer Mark D over Kelly).

Pack my bags and head to LSU as soon as I could. It's a chance to get the best athletes and see if your system will work work with them. LSU is going to be in a good spot when it comes to finding a coach. Here is what I see maybe happening.

LSU - Chip Kelly, Herman, Briles, RR, Dantonio

If I was LSU I would hire Herman but that's me. LSU is quite possibly a better job then USC and Texas, and Saban is gone sooner then later, back to the NFL he will go. Petrino or RR would be great hires for LSU...

Some of these comments are absurd. Dantonio has been much more successful than Saban was at MSU and is recognized widely, outside of Ann Arbor, for it. He's a candidate for many other more prestigious jobs, but it's well known he has no interest and plans to retire in East Lansing. Further, people on this board have been predicting his doom every new coaching hire from RR, to Hoke and now Harbaugh. Now Harbaugh will win more than lose going forward but it's time people deal with the facts and that Dantonio can pick and choose and he's already chosen to retire in EL.

I say this as a Michgan fan and alum but also a Michigan man who can respect and acknowledge the success that someone like Dantonio has had at a place like MSU.

That was RR and Hoke though. It's hard to see him winning more than not against Harbaugh. Michigan should have won last year, look like the much better team this year, and play next year at home. Nobody's saying he's going to all of a sudden go 5-7 just that if he loses 2/3 in a row to Harbaugh people aren't going to be happy in EL.

I don't think his cry-baby, disrepekt shctick will fly in the bayous. Especially after his 38-0 beat down vs Bama last season. He would be a hard sell to the Baton Rouge faithful starving for offense.

The guys not leaving. There's a weird east Lansing thing that I won't ever understand but Izzo and Dantonio are there until they retire. I honestly never want him to leave, especially with a 7-2 record against Michigan. The turn is finally here, time to beat him.

Not seeing Dantonio go and not seeing LSU want him.  This is going to cost LSU a fortune in buyout money.  They may have trouble finding someone who wants the job...not sure this is the destination job that LSU thinks it is.  Besides why would they pay out $13-18 million in buyout to hire a guy in his 60s with a heart condition?  Makes zero sense from a risk management point of view.

Louisiana in the summer is one of the most miserable, bug infested, muggy & hot places on earth.  I can't see anybody in their right mind wanting to live there.

In my opinion It's media smoke. Very nearly clickbait.

Dantonio is an excellent coach. But he's 60 something, and highly revered in East Lansing. Why would he leave to do a rebuild job sonewheee else where he has to deal with asshole fans while he does it?

It makes no sense to me.

It is one of the best jobs in the country and is definitely a destination job. Recruits from Louisiana stay home as much or more than any other state and with the fertile recruiting area next door in Texas, proximity is a selling point. They are in one of the best divisions in the best conferences in the sport and it is a high paying job. Anyone who thinks they will have a hard time finding someone who wants the job is a little off. They don't give a shit about the buyout money.

He's too old to start over and he would trade bumping up against Wisconsin, UM & OSU for Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, et al.

The notion that it will happen because Nick went to LSU ignores one crucial fact:

When Saban went to LSU in 2000, he was 49 with no significant health issues.

Dantonio will be 61 in March 2017 and has had recent heart problems.

It's just plain dumb to think for five seconds that Dantonio will end up in Baton Rouge.

I'm not even sure they'd want him as a first choice. Don't get me wrong, I think he's an outstanding coach. MSU was a tire fire under bobby williams and only 'stable' under J.L. Smith.  But his age and health are major issues for a program looking to build lasting success and not be in the same spot in 5 years.

I think it's doubtful, for reasons mentioned already.   I could see it happening in one particular case: if Dantonio really, really wants a national title to feel like his career is complete.  The beatdown at the hands of Alabama could have convinced him that it's not going to happen in East Lansing.  But I think it's more likely he just retires in a couple of years.

Maybe now is the best time for Dantonio to move on. If you combine his ability as a coach with the recruits he can land at LSU, well, just think about what he could possibly do there. Nobody expects it to happen, but this would be a home run hire for LSU if it found a way to pull it off.

While Dantonio could certainly bring to them something they desperately need at LSU - that is, a system that doesn't require Leonard Fournette to be healthy on every single play - there is one big that I think someone like Dantonio would resent which would be a fact of life in the SEC, and that's the politics of the average SEC athletic dpeartment.

Michigan State has allowed him to build that program as he wants and more or less in his image, and that's exactly what he's done. I don't know that he would ultimately get that freedom if - by some fluke - he ended up in Baton Rouge. That, and has others have mentioned, he's 61 and basically has the green light to be coach for life in East Lansing - to leave that now and start over would take an offer that LSU probably would not be willing to cough up.

I want it to be after we beat them in EL this year, so it looks like he is afraid of UM/JH...

But realistically, there is zero chance he leaves that couch fire

Would call it small to modest. Last year every single star aligned for MSU and they still got waxed in the semis. He has no legitimate upside at MSU - he'll never win a title there. If he cares about winning and being remembered as a really great coach, LSU is a great place to go to scratch that itch. If he prefers to be good, he stays.

Perkis-Size Me

Not a good choice forfeiture party involved.

Dantonio would have to go and rebuild an entire program from the ground up. And at his age, and with recent health issues, I'm not sure he'll want to do that. Expectations at MSU are now at a high level, but they're reasonable. At LSU, every year is title or bust. I'm guessing that's stress he can do without. Add in the fact that now you have to contend with Alabama every year, and Dantonio has shown that even with his teams at full strength, he is no match for them.

Finally, Dantonio has built his entire life and reason for living into playing and beating Michigan. The guy will have no reason to exist if he leaves.

I don't want Mork to leave East Lansing. I want Harbaugh to beat him into sumbission and then keep beating him just for fun.

BUT

I think Mork is a helluva football coach and I think he would do very well at LSU.

his ties are Ohio. can he recruit in the south? he is a good coach, but he's msu greatest all time coach now, why leave....

I had that thought shortly after the Miles new broke. It won't happen, but it would be hilarious. Can you imagine the reaction from Sparty after Saban dos the same thing? I think getting away from Meyer and Harbaugh is the last reason why he'd leave MSU. Having that high competition and being underestimated is what fuels him. Although maybe the opportunity to dethrone Saban would be tempting.

Ran into Connor Cook's mom at the Titans-Raiders game yesterday. She said Dantonio told them he's going to retire from MSU and will be in the next few years. Having a daughter graduating makes sense as well. She said he wants to enjoy retired life a bit and spending it more with family when they have more time (not in school) makes sense as well. He's not looking to take on a new task rebuilding.

TheTruth41

That the family would know how long he plans on staying (as sure as any coach knows how long he's going to stay at a school).

I would believe what she says would be accurate, that if he leaves on his own terms it'll be in the next few years from MSU and that'll be it for him, which I know others have gotten that gist off the MSU boards as well.  Seems to be a lot pointed in one direction.

Probably one of the better sources you'll come across anyway.  Much better than anything a beat writer could get out of him.  Believer who and what you want, I don't really care.  All I know is what she told me jives with what others have been suspecting as well unless the entire MSU fanbase and former QB moms are all in a conspiracy together to throw out bogus information.  You're right, that's probably more likely.

1) He has no reason to tell her his true career plan - true or otherwise - unless it is some version of "I'm a spartan for life".  Do you seriously think he would say anything contrary to "I am a Spartan for life" to her, or Connor?

2) It is probably more likely that she has zero inside information at all, but just tells anyone who asks her opinion of his future "I talked to Mark myself and he told me he is a Spartan for life!"

3) "the entire spartan fanbase and former QB moms are all in a consipracy..."  Is that supposed to be irony or hyperbole? Obviously spartan fans and QB moms have a stake in promoting that "spartan for life" narrative.  Like... duh.

4) I actually think he IS a spartan for life - but to use Connor Cook's Mom as a source is just silly.
