Dantonio Being Mentioned as Possible Les Miles Replacement
LSU is about to go through its own version of "It's Happening," and I've been spending the day looking at all the speculation on who will replace Les Miles. Houston's Tom Herman is at the top of the list, of course, just as he will be for Texas, Auburn and USC. Bobby Petrino is also getting a lot of run.
What I find interesting, though, is that multiple LSU reporters and national guys are speculating that Mike D'Antoni could be in the mix. Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports had my favorite explanation as to why Dantonio might be the guy - to get away from Harbaugh.
This columnist from the Baton Rouge newspaper also lists Dantonio among the 10 candidates for the job.

Tressel didn't leave, he was fired. I'm sorry, I meant to say "retired".

If he were to go, he could still play the disrespekt card vis-a-vis alabama.

Any coach not named Saban, Meyer or Harbaugh would be a fool not to have his agent contact LSU. Dantonio probably already has nis name in the hat.
He knows his window to take advantage of Michigans eight "missing years" is over. He knows he could amass the second-best talent in NCAA football due to location and "friendly" boosters. He also knows his reputation will never be better than it is right now and LSU would probably pay him at least 5 million if he asked for it.
Dantonio won't be going to LSU, but it won't be because he didn't put his hat in the ring. It will be because LSU is looking for a coach with an "exciting offense." There is a lot of speed down here and they want to take advantage of it with a spread offense. Boring and conservative isn't going to cut it this time.

Agree, he'll look but won't get a call unless a few others don't answer first. I dunno that LSU wants a spread offense, but they more than 'Miles on protein supplement' - which is what they'd get with Mick Dan'tonia.

If that's the case there's a certain coach that might be ready to come in from the wilderness of Tuscon for the swamplands of Baton Rouge.

I'm sure the LSU boosters would help with moving the whole anabolic steroid operation to Louisiana.
The couch burning operation may be more difficult to move. Most of the folks selling pre-treated (gasoline) couches have to report to probation officers in EL every week.

If Spurrier can't win an SEC title there, no one can. That said, me thinks he stays at MSU for another 3 years before stepping down. Maaaybe after a short break then he'll go somewhere else like, say, LSU

Right, coaches who flop in the NFL are lousy measuring sticks, so, let's never use Nick Saban as an example of a good coach.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:05 PM ^
How can we not use him as (one) example of a good coach?
September 26th, 2016 at 12:43 PM ^
Re-read it. He was being sarcastic.
September 26th, 2016 at 11:57 AM ^
Flopping in the NFL means little.. Nick Saban flopped in the NFL too. He turned out OK. And some guy named Bill flopped big time in his first NFL gig. Not sure what he's up to now but I think he has 4 Super Bowl rings, so yeah... Pete Carroll failed his first two tries in the NFL, he's decent now.
Point is, saying Spurrier flopped in the NFL as a reason he's not a great coach isn't a very strong argument.

Interesting. Maybe he'll run away from Harbaugh like Urban ran away from Saban.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:49 PM ^
Or Saban from Lloyd Carr.
September 26th, 2016 at 2:52 AM ^
Saban didn't leave because of Carr; he left because the MSU president was a dick. There was a "movement" among presidents to take power away from AD's. MSU's president, John DiBiaggio, decided to do a Dave Brandon from the President's seat and meddle in the football program. Saban told him to take a flying fuck through a rolling doughnut.
DiBiaggio was like having David Brandon but with more power and even more input into the football program. Saban left MSU for basically the same reason Harbaugh didn't come to Michigan when Brandon asked him.
Good decision on Saban's part...

Thought it was mentioned that he was sick of always being overshadowed by Michigan and having to share in-state recruits with us. At LSU, there's no one else to compete against for Louisiana recruits. But your story also sounds plausible.

He'd probably just retire if he loses multiple times to Harbaugh and Meyer in the coming years. He's never going to recruit at the level of Michigan or Ohio State anyway. He's probably content with owning Michigan for the greater part of a decade and beating OSU a few times.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:21 AM ^
Those losses are coming.
The guy lucked out last year in Harbaugh's first shot at him. What woud make anyone think that it's going to get any easier in the coming years for Sparty?
Develop and coach them up all you want. Harbaugh is recruiting at a higher level and has an NFL level coaching staff.
if Dantonio wanted to cash out he could listen to LSU. I suspect, to quote him, "pride comes before a fall" and he stays at MSU to his detriment.
I doubt Harbaugh has forgotten his gloating after last year, his avoiding the handshake, and his going on about "where are the Wolverines"?
That light at the end of the tunnel is the train.
September 26th, 2016 at 2:28 AM ^
Then how in the hell are we ever going to beat OSU? As good as Jim & co. recruit, Urban and his minions are doing it at historic levels. I have to believe (for my own sanity) that there's more to winning than recruiting and coaching... Can't pure luck come into play - ie Sparty's fluikish win over M last season?
September 26th, 2016 at 5:55 AM ^
After his team taunted our student section, he said that to our fans at the tunnel. Clearly, you saw the same clip of it that I did. That's the reason why, if we have the opportunity, we are going to run the score up against him every chance we get.
Press: "Was that a statement game?"
JH: "I once heard someone ask about where the Wolverines were at. Well (points over shoulder as if to acknowledge a scoreboard), I think we all know where they where just at."

It certainly is if you're a football coach. It's probably better in every tangible way; pay, facilities, support, strength of the program.
