Dabo/Meyer rivalry heating up

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

Dabo told 5* Jackson Carman that Meyer was "on the back end of his career" in a negative recruiting pitch. It's amazing how much Clemson has been trolling OSU lately. I may be a little jealous of Clemson in that regard but it's refreshing to see them get a dose of their futility medicine knowing there's no on the field results they can point to against them to shut them up

You’re such a tool for saying this! I’ll never understand why Michigan fans insist upon deriding their own program like this. It’s NOT a bad class, it’s a small class loaded with hand-picked talent. Kindly stop being such a naysayer. It does nothing but presents a bad image of our fan base to recruits and potential recruits!

1) It's mgoblog, I could see if this was on coach4Jim's twitter or reruits twitter

2) This class is nothing special compared to the last few, which was expected. So he has a little bit of an argument.

I think you both are overreacting, can't we have a littlel bit of Christmas joy around here???

Good points ScottyP.  This class isn't worth getting upset over in the least, but it isn't making me do backflips either.  It is a solid B+ currently.  Now if we get some crazy "flip" and Otis doesn't head to GA, then I will do a solid cartwheel.

It expresses an obnoxious, condescending, entitled attitude of a portion of the fan base. There are logical and common circumstances effecting the rank of this class. Get over it and stop criticizing the class, and by extension, the committed players within it. He doesn’t have an “argument” he’s being snarky and painting the incoming 10-12 ranked class out to be UNNACEPTABLE!!! It’s yet be determined, and there a several players in the class who are likely underrated due to having less National exposure. We get it, we don’t have the power of Bama and OSU, and maybe never will. Find players that fit the system and culture, and most importantly, where there is need.

This fanbase is so entitled and so terrrible. We have no Big Ten titles since Bush admin but we are sooo entitled

Based on actual accomplishments the only thing keeping the football program relevant is the fanbase that keeps going to games and supporting the team through constant mediocrity

Exactly right! The program has done nothing for a long time and yet many think A recruiting class just outside of the top 10 is completely unacceptable and worthy of being mocked. That Is an expression of him entitlement.

A valid point was made. Look at all the top programs that are bringing in multiple 5 star recruits. This UM class is thin. Your suggestion this is a good class because of “hand picked talent” doesn’t resonate with some of us. All recruiting classes are comprised of hand-picked talent. That’s what recruiting is. This wasn’t a year where the coaches said “hey, let’s ignore the top recruiting targets and go for ‘hand-picked’ talent instead”. Don’t think that happened.

Clearly you’re unaware of what constitutes a “valid point.” This year, like every year, is a year in which the coaches made up a recruiting board, and went after their targets. The reason you and others think it’s “thin” is because you place too much emphasis upon the evaluations of recruiting sites and their ridiculous star/ranking systems, and not enough on the first hand evaluation of the Michigan coaches. You’re welcome to your opinion, but I think it’s patent idiocy.

Outback isn’t fast casual, man. Fast casual is custom-ish/higher quality food (usually considered “better” than fast food) with no table service. Think: Noodles & Co, Chipotle, Qdoba, Potbelly, Panera, etc. Casual dining is generally table service, and often chains: Outback, and similar chains (Fridays, Red Robin, etc) as well as plenty of non-chains.

Ummmm...I'm all for the history lesson, but you should feel bad for posting this. The last 10 years have not been kind to us regarding MSU...and I don't even want to see our overall record against OSU.

Hand picked talent? More like left over scraps. Those 4 losses and bring unranked had everything to do with missing. I guarantee you win 2 of those 4 today's signing day is looking different.

If 21/22 in this class were 5* talent & the last was 4*, we would see lots of bitching about the bum 4* who they should have passed on.

Let's not forget that if Michigan decided to suddenly lower its academic standards to where they were graduating people who cannot put together a legible sentence the number of stars would increase, making some fanz happy.

Clemson won the NC last year. Their 2013-2016 classes were ranked 15, 16, 9, and 11. This years Michigan class stands at 12th right now, and could possibly move up if a couple of the remaining targets fall this way. The last two were 5th and 8th. Assuming the '19 class falls at 5 being conservative based on projections, Michigan's four year average is 7.5. Clemson's four year average before winning the NC was 12.75.

Please tell me again how horrible this class is, and how it is going to set the program back.

I think you can be both. Take Ronnie Bell for example. Michigan did an in person evaluation. The scouting websites have admitted they didn’t do an in person evaluation and highlight film isn’t enough for them to accurately gauge talent level. That’s a situation where I’d definitely go with the coaches. It seems like a lot of these lower ranked guys Harbaugh is after, are guys who didn’t attend the top camps so they don’t have the attention of those recruiting gurus. Which brings me to my main issue with recruiting rankings. They tend to value how a player looks in a T-shirt and shorts in 7-On-7 situations over how good of a football player they actually are. Teams like Wisconsin and MSU don’t get the most athletic guys, they just get really good football players. They go after the stuff that doesn’t show up in t-shirts and shorts, but what is important on the football field. Obviously you’re going to have the guys who show out in camps and on the gridiron, but there are a lot of guys who slip through those cracks.

There are some great examples of this staff getting in on little known recruits.  Those are steals!

But to play devils advocate (or apparently a whiny entitled ani-fan),
how does one look at these coaches who clearly have a 1st, 2d, 3rd, 4th choice per position, who make multiple visits, prioritize, roll out the red carpet etc.
then get few or 0 of those coveted guys?

They then seemingly offer a "who dat" on the eve of signing day.

Now thats a term that sound much sharsher than intended, a whodat is sometimes a tweener that fits perfectly in a Don Brown blitz package, or a tall lanky lineman that Frey loves to bulk up.

Having the coaches chart their own path in recruiting is fine, these guys are smart, however, it would be nice to see a few more recruiting battle wins.  OSU & Bama are mostly out of reach, but lets get some against PSU, ND, FL and ferfucksake UCLA!

Not that anyone gives a shit but i'd call the class a solid B right now.  It's good.  Theres room to drop if the cream of the crop signs elsewhere in Feb and room to be an A with any significant additions.  Based on Michigan's record the last couple years this is right where I expect them to be.

But see that’s the thing. Everyone’s first choice is going to be the Rashan Gary type players. Not realistic to always get them. Fact is, when you look at these “whodat” guys, they’re all guys who didn’t really hit the camp circuit. Guys that don’t have evaluations from the recruiting services, but DO have evaluations from Harbaugh. At that point, do you trust the “recruiting guru’s” who haven’t even seen the kid play, or do you trust Harbaugh and his staff that have seen the kid and watched him play? No, they’re probably not guys who are going to come in and light the world on fire as true freshmen. But they’re obviously guys with upside that this staff believes they can coach up and that have potential. And if there was ever a class to take a few fliers, THIS would be the class. Michigan has back to back stellar classes and the majority of those guys are in line for starting positions next season. You’re able to take risks in this class for the simple fact that these kids aren’t expected to see the field for at least 2-3 years. You have time to coach them up and let them hit their potential. You can take a boom-or-bust guy here and there because you have time to figure his abilities out before he needs to see the field.

Agreed. He's a slimy guy. I fully expect that he's been obliquely (not directly, as he'd be too smooth for that) referring to "the NFL" since Harbaugh started at Michigan.

If you wanted to scare recruits off from Meyer, you could make something up about how the slight adversity of one bad season would inspire him to fake a health condition and abandon his team for greener pastures. Oh, wait.

Negative recruiting goes on everywhere (some places I’m sure more than others) so this isn’t really a big deal. When Urban starts to get his derrière kicked by Jimmy he will give it up. Since this will be happening soon, I guess Dabo is telling the truth.

I am not an Urban Meyer admirer, but that is a pretty stupid thing to say. Last year's title game notwithstanding, Dabo cannot look down on Urban Meyer. Nick Saban is the only man in the country who may do that. Clemson is still good to gack one up to the likes of Pitt every year--you don't see Saban doing that.

December 20th, 2017 at 12:51 PM ^

I'm not sure about looking down his nose, but Clemson and Dabo have reached elite status. Whether they can sustain it like Alabama is yet to be seen, but they have it rolling right now. Also, screw Urban. I'll never get over him giving Harbaugh a jab last year (2016) in his post game presser about picking up milk on the way home. He could have handled a great game/win for his team with a little more class.

I think it's a mixed bag with Harbaugh and some of his actions. At first, I believe Harbaugh did some things to simply get attention for him/Michigan in order to keep Michigan in the news cycle. The most recent tweet at Dantonio was a shot at his own team. Stick with me for a minute. For the better part of this season Harbaugh was far less animated and attention seeking. Harbaugh also had a very young team and I believe he did not want to intentionally stir the pot. Fast forward to Dantonio and I believe he will use his tweet/actions to motivate this team for next year. Dantonio said 'they will focus on beating Michigan', well Harbaugh can now keep his team on point knowing that the intensity was turned up another notch. Embrace and beat your rival because you know you are going to get their best. The short version is that I believe Harbaugh does things for a purpose. He wants some type of response. Hell, I could just be making up the whole thing in my head. To answer your question, I am fine with Harbaugh sending messages before hand as long as he is gracious in victory. I dont like verbal battles leading up to games and I certainly don't like them post game. I am of the mindset of praising your opponent for a hard fought game.
