Custom playbooks

Submitted by BakkerUSMC on
With football being the ever-evolving sport it is, I wondered how today's most innovative coaching staffs get their innovations from principle idea to on-field application. Similar to the Train formation being discovered by the Colorado high school tape, I wonder if the Harbaugh staff is open to other creative plays and substitutions. How does one go about contacting the staff with a legitimate scheme or wrinkle? I'm not saying my playbook or schemes are Harbaugh - worthy (yet..) but if an armchair QB did come up with one, how would we introduce it to staff (without it falling into the wrong hands! No dirty buckeyes will see my scheme until it's on the field!). Not selling anything, just genuinely curious.

I've been trying to sell my Jump to Conclusions mat for years without success but your ideas sound better

Thanks to all for the responses, serious and comical! Truthfully, if I were our Commandant, I would be open to any and all ideas for improving warfare, especially since most innovations come from someone thinking about it obsessively anyway. I've been developing my scheme for around 10 years, and have run thousands of simulations (NCAA games provide more realistic playbooks and player skill variety than NFL). With statistical analysis into outside factors, I've got a pretty serious playbook ready. Without the large bodies needed, it's hard to put together a high school team that could run it though. Seriously curious if a grad assistant somewhere wants to review some private YouTube videos of my schemes though, any realistic way I could contribute would satisfy me eternally, and validate a decade's worth of research

Hey, you're a good sport--you're alright! I'm going to upvote all your posts here. To give you a serious answer, it's seems the best way to proceed would be hitting up a local high school or youth league team coach. See if a coach will run your plays, or allow you to serve as a coordinator. Start at a lower level than Harbaugh. And at least you could show the Michigan coaches some tape.

.... contacting a GA is solid.... of all the staff members, they have the most time and are eager to contribute. They will review it and if there's merit, indeed will pass it on. EDIT: use your marine connection..... Jim Minick is Coach Harbaugh right hand man and recently retired. Bottom line, if you really want to get into their hands, it can be done.

Everyone knows where he lives.  Make sure you put something nice in the envelope for Sarah though, since I'm assuming she's the one opening the mail.  Maybe write the plays on the back of a $500 gift certificate to Bellanina Spa?

Step 2: Climb a tree next to his house.

Step 3: Stay there until he comes outside and asks what the hell is wrong with you.

Step 4: Throw your playbook at him.

Step 5. Wait for police.

These comments got me thinking....

Imagine if a coach's football playbook was subject to copyright law similar to a songwriter's catalog.  Much of a coach's worth comes from their playbook and the creativity that goes into building its plays.  This is similar to a songwriter/musician, where their livelihood also depends on their musical/lyrical creativity, and their right to be compensated is protected by law.

Imagine paying royalties to run a jet sweep.  How about having to force a route runner to stutterstep in order to "change" the play enough so it avoids a copyright lawsuit? The "all the football plays have already been thought up" argument is common in musical litigation and I believe there are a maximum number of notes that a song can match the original.

If the “author” of the play were required to be acknowledged in some way, it would be interesting to see where successful coaches draw their playbook from, and how much they actually create themselves.

I saw the title and was expecting to hear something about embossed, leather-bound commemorative playbooks that are individually numbered...first 100 callers get free expedited shipping, a matching miniature notebook, and a Slap Chop.

Just for the record, I have no intent of selling my schemes or ask anything in return. To be able to contribute to my team in any way would be rewarding enough. To be honest, it's been my dream to be a coordinator/analyst, but I haven't had the opportunity to pursue it full time. If given the right opportunity, I'd definitely seek it out though.

Gus was a successful and innovative high school coach in Arkansas. He got elevated to OC at Arkansas under Houston Nutt (those were the Darren McFadden wildcat days) when they recruited Mitch Mustain, but wound up leaving after a season and coordinated a terrific offense at Tulsa. Then Auburn called him up and he rode Cam Newton to a national title.
