A Couple of Bits on UCLA

Submitted by MichiganiaMan on February 9th, 2024 at 6:12 PM

I’ve mentioned being a little plugged in at UCLA, so wanted to offer a few nuggets on where things stand along with some speculation on what’s next.

On Chip

I’ve mentioned this before, but UCLA power brokers have REALLY wanted Chip gone for a while. Many wanted him canned in 2020, but admin decided against making a covid-year transition. But since then the guy’s been winning too much to justify firing him (it feels worth noting that S&C coach Thump Belton earns Ben Herbert-levels of praise around these parts). It almost stands as a counterfactual to how Michigan fired Rich Rod at just the right time, before he got a chance to deliver a fourth straight year of improvement while coming off of a bowl season.

The impediment has really been a confluence of factors, including 1) everyone expected Jarmond to have left by now for “greener pastures,” 2) there’s a campus-wide push to keep the powder dry on big decisions until there's a new chancellor in place, and 3) there’s still some residual hard feelings in the booster community related to how the AD handled the 2021 Holiday Bowl.

FWIW, Jarmond is generally well-regarded for his handling of the financial mess he’s inherited. At the same time, someone in the near future is going to have the unenviable task of announcing sports cuts. That announcement isn’t as imminent as it otherwise would have been w/o that sweet, sweet B1G tv money. But it’s coming, and some people (read: idiots) will almost certainly blame the B1G move for this result.

But make no mistake - the energy around UCLA football is more akin to what you’d see from a program that just went 0-12. Recruiting is worse than dead, and USC made them look small by poaching Lynn. Chip was a lame duck, and he almost certainly has better job security now in Columbus.

What’s Next?

Now this section is total speculation. That said, I fully expect them to hire a placeholder coach. They could elevate the DC, but I suspect they’ll go the Baylor 2016 route and try to secure a steady hand who can stabilize the program and reset the foundation so that someone can come in next year with more of a buzz and begin building things back up.

I know Deion’s name gets tossed out for nearly every major opening, but I’ll just say this - this year’s Homecoming game-day experience certainly left some impressions. Consider this - it was UCLA’s home game, but there were vendors out in streets selling COLORADO gear. Also worth noting, Black LA really showed out for that game at a time when UCLA football is completely irrelevant in Black LA (terrible for recruiting ofc). Don’t quote me on this, but he’ll probably be a top target assuming they go the placeholder route and he has a good (i.e., bowl eligible) 2nd season in Boulder.

One more note to make good on my promise to offer insight on the UCLA football stadium situation: The TLDR is that none of us are likely to live long enough to see UCLA play anywhere other than at the Rose Bowl. Moving to Sofi has too many logistical hurdles, and would horribly affect weekend foot traffic for local businesses. The new metro system upgrades would make an on-campus stadium more viable, but there’s simply nowhere to put it. The Rose Bowl is sorely in need of renovations, but there’s no discernible momentum to do so even with the Olympics coming up in 2028.

Well - we just had a pretty bitching set of earthquakes as I was typing this, so I’m going to head out and go drink. Cheers!

God, I really hope that this whole B1G West Coast expansion works out. Having lived here in California for 16+ years and witnessed the steady decline of the Pac-12 first hand, I don't have a great impression of the college sports culture out here. Even back when Stanford was winning the Pac-12, producing Heisman finalists, and playing in NY6 bowls, most people here in the Bay Area barely noticed, let alone cared. A lot of that apathy and lack of enthusiasm can be attributed to mismanagement by Pac-12 athletic departments, especially at the California schools. That causes more apathy and indifference, which lets them get away with their incompetence, and the cycle continues.

My hope is that the B1G will elevate the fortunes of these schools instead of these schools dragging the rest of us down with them.

The apathy is just part of the culture out here. People really don't care about college sports like they do in the Midwest. Perhaps because the former PAC 12 CA schools are all pretty hard to get into (SC being the easiest and worst academically and they suck). Not like a lot of Midwest BIG schools that'll take just about anybody (osu, msu, iu, psu, iowa, etc.)

Those earthquakes are no joke. I was in the ‘89 one during the World Series in San Fran and it was beyond noticeable. But then in San Diego I could never tell if it was an earthquake or the sound of freedom flying over since I worked just north of Miramar.

As long as the damage from an earthquake is not bad, it's no big deal. Being in a small earthquake is basically nothing. Even if you can really feel it, as long as buildings are still standing at the end, it's a mere curiosity. Just seeing a tornado would be way freakier (I imagine, having never seen one).

Now, if you're in a terrible earthquake (which I have never been), that would surely be terrifying. I don't think necessarily freaky, but certainly very scary. So, you could argue being in a catastrophic earthquake would be freakier than seeing a tornado. However, I think being in a tornado Wizard of Oz style, or even having it go right through your house while hiding in your basement, would be much freakier than even the worst earthquake.

The griping about Kelly not being the least bit interested in recruiting has been going on for a while, I believe. Somehow, UCLA gets talent here and there, but they never seem to be making a great effort to do even the comparatively little that they have in this regard.

Cool story I guess. You can’t give Rich Rod credit for 4 years of improvements when…he didn’t coach a 4th year.
Rich Rod is credited with the ABSOLUTE worst season in UM history with 3-9. Breaking the longest standing bowl record.

That’s almost criminal to exclude that and say he improved every year. Yes, you did say he was canned at the right time. It just lowers your credibility on the rest of your opinions.

Well, the point is that UCLA has been like what Michigan could have been had Rich Rod been given four or more years -- gradual improvement from downright atrocious to merely mediocre and underwhelming. I think the counterfactual undersells how bad Rich Rod's defenses were all three years, but it is a useful analogy. Helps to put the UCLA situation into context.

Supposedly they're looking at Fleck which seems like a really weird choice for the west coast. But I wonder if these extra coaching shakeups might shake free a QB or some useful position coach candidates.

Tbh, that reporting reeks of agency service to me. Guys like Bruce Feldman and Brett McMurphy are getting worse and worse at disguising the favors they’re doing for agents and their clients, and connecting Fleck to UCLA feels emblematic. I could be wrong obviously, but I’d very extremely surprised to see them hire him.

Uneducated prediction. UCLA advances an internal hire to head coach for the year. Barring an unexpectedly great year, Deion Sanders is the coach come 2025.

I can't for the life of me imagine Deion going to UCLA. I assume his next stop is a southern SEC or ACC team — boy, could I easily imagine him at an LSU or a Miami or (of course) Florida State. The next step on his coaching progression — HBC to non-traditional-power Power 5 to .... — would have to be a final one (in college, at least) to a premier position at a big time football school.

UCLA would be a step sideways, and I could only see that if he starts to crash and burn at Colorado. At the moment he's a cult hero, there, and I don't see any reason for him to give that up simply to move sideways.

Appreciate the insight here.  What is the power broker's beef with Chip? Just that he took a while to win after being hired?  From an outsider perspective, he turned the program around and had them in a solid place from a W / L perspective.
