Ohio rb had UM offer but opted to go play for Coach O.

That's disappointing, but I can't blame him for wanting to see better weather than he's experienced in "OHIO".

It will be really interesting to watch Coach O this year. I kind of think we may be looking at a Chizik scenario. A mediocre head coach who had the best OC in the game and the best college QB of all time in the same magical season.

I know it’s fashionable on this blog to rip on James Franklin and Eddie O, but what exactly makes him “mediocre?”  LSU has improved their record every year he’s been there. I feel like people are jaded by his record when he was coaching just a miserable (by the high standards of some SEC brethren) program at Ole Miss, pre extensive use of the bag.

LSU will probably go back to losing to Alabama. It took an all time great LSU team to barely beat Alabama this past year. However, O is recruitng at a very high level so he'll probably get to consistent 10 win season as long as his coordinators are not incompetent.

He’s viewed as “mediocre” because prior to Joe Burrow having an absolutely unreal season out of nowhere and LSU going 15-0, Ed O had a career record of 41-36.

I don’t think people are ready to chalk last season up as Ed O being a great coach. It’s more Joe Brady and Joe Burrow teaming up to break some insane records. Similar to Franklin’s success being largely attributed to Barkley and Joe Moorhead’s offense.

If Ed O can duplicate or achieve similar success without Burrow and Brady, that would change a lot of minds. If LSU falls back into being a 9 win team, then people will still talk about him being mediocre.

yup.

i mean in his first two full seasons (he took over as interim after Les was fired early in the year), he had a 9 win and 10 win season.

LSU is always going to have a ton of talent, and Orgeron just needs to know how to delegate... we'll see if the changes to the staff have a big effect.

Coach O seems like he’d struggle to count to twenty without using his toes, but a winner is a winner. Until he proves otherwise, it seems a bit silly not to assume his team will be good. Same with Franklin. The dude is a used car salesman but he’s been winning some important games.

Well, that Ole Miss team was using the bag probably as much as they are now, it just wasn't big enough.

But yes, Franklin and Coach O aren't "mediocre" in the sense they aren't good at their jobs.  But Jim Harbaugh's 5-year record at UM is 47-18.  Franklin's is 45-21.  Coach O took over for Miles so it's harder to compare but he went 9-4, 10-3 in his first 2 years.  That's about what Harbaugh did.  Maybe the 15-0 NC is the new standard for him at LSU, but if not and he falls back to the 10-3/9-4/11-2 range then that isn't demonstrably different that Harbaugh.  Maybe that means all of these coaches are mediocre, which is fine.  But I guess that's always been my pushback on people decrying Harbaugh as some bum compared to these other coaches.

guys like Franklin and Oregon have actually won championships though, that's why they get the nod.

ppl here laud Harbaugh's 3x10 win seasons like its some kind of massive success; then deride Franklin who has 3 x 11 win seasons in the same time frame and say he's a lousy coach.

Franklin took over a program every bit in the shitter as Harbaugh did. Coach O'Brien did a ton of the heavy lifting, but that was a program that was down even before Sandusky...

Harbaugh is a good coach - imo he hasn't shown he's a great coach.

Forget winning the B1G East for a second... How many times has Michigan finished tied for first? How about second place?

Getting tomato canned by OSU isn't the only team Michigan loses to on a yearly basis...

In the words of Lee Corso not so fast my friend. I think a couple of months ago I would have said the same thing that this team will regress toward the mean.I still believe that but I think this team's mean to be regressed towards is a little different. They still have some of the best wide receivers and running backs in the NCAA they're loaded with talent all over. They hired a similar offensive coordinator and Myles Brennan is a physical clone of Joe burrow. I do not think this team will go undefeated nor am I saying they will win the national title. I am saying I don't think they're going to go 9 and 4 or 10 and 3. This is a legitimate playoff contender again! if they're not in the top four teams at the end of the season they're going to be right up there. Still a regression... But a regression from being one of the best college football teams/seasons of all time.

You may well be correct.  But big things changed when Joe Brady came in challenging the LSU Qb and receivers.  If Linehan does the same and they play at a high level then absolutely the drop off will not be major.

Imo LSU changes defense and offensive passing game.  The defense might actually be better this season.  The offense I don’t think anyone should remotely expect Brennan to be anything close to what Joe Brady was.  And the offseason talk by Coach O suggests he isn’t going to be what Burrow was.

Who knows how far the drop off is, but I think that is anywhere from 5 to 15 depending on how Brennan plays.  Top 5 talent, how does the quarterback play..

I agree.  I think he's better than Chizik (and LSU recruits better) but the transcendent offense powered by a #1 pick is a tough pattern to keep going and the SEC is so tough even a slight drop in playmaking can lead to 2-3 losses.  And Burrow wasn't some hot-shot recruit; he was a guy who was good but played like one of the best QBs in college football history.  Banking on your transfer QB doing that again is unlikely.

LSU lost a massive amount of experienced talent to the NFL and both coordinators.

They still have lots of raw talent.

They play in the SEC West.

All of which suggests to me that they'll have a stepback season a la Michigan 2017.

Would like to have Kiner in the class, but lots of folks would have just complained about how he was not good enough to beat OSU. Now those same people will talk about this as a recruiting loss.

Seemed like Michigan backed off him a bit in the past month or so. Michigan was the favorite for a while, then Cincinnati was the presumed favorite, but committed to LSU.

Seems like our main targets are one or both of Donovan Edwards and Prophet Brown

I wouldn’t say UM backed off of him. He just picked up a lot of interest over the past month from other teams. Both OSU & ND were interested in him. OSU just got commitments from two really good backs so that left Kiner out. ND made him mad because they recruited Shipley with the strategy he was their only target. So when Shipley committed to Clemson & ND circled back Kiner was mad. His HS coaches said he would have committed to either OSU or ND if either would have pushed for him early. Michigan did push for him, along with a handful of other RBs currently. Edwards is a tough one to call because he is now getting a lot of attention he wasn’t a few weeks ago from SEC schools, ND, ect... Prophet Brown is more of what position he wants to play in college.

I'm sure we'll pull some rising 3 star out of MA  who is not the most gifted athletically, but a a heady tough player who will be a great fit for the program or some other bullshit.

JH cooled on this kid the last few weeks. Kiner doesn't meet the standards and athleticism of the kids from the New England area that we seek.

Good luck to him.  I do wonder how many of these commitments hold considering guys aren't visiting campuses and staffs aren't able to evaluate guys in person.  I'm not saying he won't stay at LSU but I also don't think anyone has stopped recruiting kids because of some commitments during a pandemic.
