Coaching bits Day 4

"Some definite Ed Cooley buzz" per Brian Snow. Supposedly he and Warde are buddies so that makes him a candidate. His offenses are brutal and I mean BRUTAL. He's never had a top 25 kenpom offense and the last four years they have ranked 164, 100, 101, and 92 on O. He would also probably offer the least amount of continuity among the rumored candidates. HARD PASS.

Oh Howard:

Juwan Howard tells me #Michigan has retained Turnkey Sports for its coaching search. Howard has spoken with them and has been informed that Wolverines AD Warde Manuel is very interested in speaking with him.

Maybe by this time next week Warde will get around to actually speaking with a candidate. Not like recruits aren't making decisions and assistants aren't getting interviewed or anything.

Also per Snow the guy at Turnkey running the search is close to Billy Donovan who highly recommended Shaka Smart. Would be a great recruiter but would need a strong support staff and assistants around him.

Tick tock.

I say slap the interim tag on Yaklich and give him a go for next year. Shaka and Cooley aren't going anywhere. We can always grab one of them next season if Yaklich doesn't pan out. And even if they are hired elsewhere in the meantime, it's not a big loss whatsoever.

There is a side issue to these money posts. What is almost as important as money to a kid who wants to get to the NBA?

You say PT. Yes. Guarantees to run the show. Yes. How about not having to bother with class work. Absolutely. These kids are in and out so fast that who wants to sit in a classroom when they could be sleeping or working on their game. How about I get a kid 5 classes that are easy A's and they don't even have to bother to show up or some guy is doing the work for them.

College basketball is so corrupt and an absolute fraud on so many levels. It's not just the money. Sure, it's about the money but there are plenty of ways to entice a kid to go to your 'school' without ever having to get him or his family money. How about girls?

I'm hoping the Cooley thing is just something Warde is doing as a favor to his buddy (get him more money from Providence and/or some notoriety for being associated with the Michigan job) and I don't think he's a serious candidate. It's a common agent move, we saw it with the "Cutcliffe turned Michigan down" part of the Harbaugh search. If I'm wrong it's a bad sign but I have no reason to assume the worst.

There are some of us who need to calm down and stop rushing to the worst possible conclusion. Our AD is a large department and there is a lot going on behind the scenes right now. While Manuel is the director and ultimately responsible, that doesn't mean he has to do everything - I'm sure there are assistants out there working closely with the search firm and all the candidates.

I think I got caught up in all the negativity other posters have had around him. I'll admit that I haven't done too much research into his career and coaching ability myself, so I'm basically parroting what I've read from others. To me he seems to be a good not great coach, and his hiring here is far from a slam dunk. At this point I don't think he should be above the Yaklich/Jordan line.

Obviously, the OP has no idea how the hiring process for a C-suite works. It is only four days. Recruits are not among his priorities. They have signed letters and are not going anywhere. Keeping assistants is important but not as much you think. The new guy may want to bring his own people. These speculations are mostly baseless.  The only credible information at this stage is direct quote from a coach removing himself from consideration.

I think Howard would be a good hire here me out. The guy has been an assistant coach and knows the game of basketball. He has an nba championship as a coach and a player granted he didn’t contribute much but he knows what it takes to win. The guy has played with Jalen Rose Chris Webber Leviton James Chris Bosh Dwayne wade basketball greats. Was a member of the fab five that every high school athlete has heard of. His name alone can bring in the top recruits. As far as his coaching skills it’s a bit of an unknown but if he can hire a strong staff around him that’s all he needs. The fan base will be patient I hope but I see this as a successful marriage at least to keep us consistent with where we have been the past 10 years. Just my opinion

As far as how long warde takes it really doesn’t matter. Michigan has 9 scholarship players currently on the team. All recruits have already committed so all the new coach can do is get Jalen to recommit and keep Cole commited. Warde has plenty of time to hire someone but I would definitely want someone hired before June at the latest.

Some of you need to explain something to me. You criticize Manuel for not vetting some candidates once he knew Beilein was interviewing.

Now, so he doesn't so what is 1-2 weeks going to do for the search? UM would have an easier time getting a coach hired in early May than late May?

Reality Check. Unless Donovan decides to take the job, the hire will be underwhelming, disappointing, and/or “the dumbest hire ever”. It’s a shit situation. Juwan would make the most people happy, but there’s no evidence that he would be a better college coach than Cooley or Prohm. I wouldn’t want to be the guy having to make the hire. There isn’t a realistic home run hire out there.
