The Long Season And Pennant…

The Long Season And Pennant Race by Jim Brosnan.

At least they didn’t lose…

At least they didn’t lose him to Houston

The first name that came to…

The first name that came to my mind for the experienced ex head coach position was Fran Dunphy. Looks like I wasn’t far off. I love this hire.

What impresses me most about…

What impresses me most about Juwan as a coach is the length of his time in the same place. Miami has had some relatively down years lately and firing assistants is always a good CYA. The fact that they stuck with him says tons about his importance there. Nobody keeps a job long in the NBA  just because people like him.

Apples and Oranges anyway…

Apples and Oranges anyway. They fired Matta and probably had Holtmann either hired or in the process of being hired. It seemed like a home run at the time, so he is getting the benefit of the doubt. As we’ve seen before, they could quickly turn on him.

The timing made the search…

The timing made the search infinitely more difficult. We don’t know who might have been interested if this happened in early April. A prominent name doesn’t necessarily mean a great fit. Juwan has brought us all back together in a way no other realistic choice would have. Can we just be happy for one day?

Juwan has created excitement…

Juwan has created excitement that was unthinkable last Monday. Kudos to Warde Manuel for having a plan, ignoring the noise, and getting his man. Juwan isn’t Patrick Ewing. Michigan isn’t Georgetown. The comparisons are unfair to both guys. Good luck, Juwan. We are behind you. Go Blue

The more I read, the better…

The more I read, the better Juwan sounds. I was skeptical at first, but it’s growing on me. I have many logistical questions, but today isn’t the day for that. Under the circumstances, a really good decision. Sky high ceiling, something none of the other available choices had. Time will tell how good a hire this turns out to be, but you can say that about any hire.

Is there anything to be read…

Is there anything to be read into Warde going to Miami to interview Juwan instead of Juwan coming to AA?

There’s a big difference…

There’s a big difference between being tough and being an immoral prick

Cooley probably isn’t the…

Cooley probably isn’t the right guy for Michigan, but he doesn’t deserve the trashing he’s getting here. He’s recruiting and taking teams to the tournament at Providence. Pitino did it, before that, maybe Dave Gavitt. He’s far from a dumpster fire. He will have a nice, long career at PC. An interview here isn’t unwarranted, just not a hire.

Rich Rod seemed like a home…

Rich Rod seemed like a home run hire at the time. In retrospect, both Rodriguez and WVU probably now realize that it was the perfect place for him. Alabama was ready to hire him, so it seemed like great hire. Comes to show you that first impressions are deceiving. Was anyone really excited when we hired Belein? Unlike ESPN would have you believe, ‘First Takes’ are usually for shit

Is it too late to call…

Is it too late to call Johnny Orr?

Do we have any direct quotes…

Do we have any direct quotes from the Athletic Department? Serious question. Not intended as a snide remark.

UCLA WAS a top three program. Alford is a damn fine coach in the absolute worst place for him. The Balls wrecked what was left of a good program. Never should have fired Ben Howland. No 18 year old kid even sees UCLA as a Top 20 program.

Not knocking Juwan, but…

Not knocking Juwan, but coaching high paid men in the NBA isn’t the same as coaching kids right out of high school. It’s apples and oranges. I’m open minded about the idea, but it’s risky. Then again, any hire is going to be risky.

Ewing interviewed for quite…

Ewing interviewed for quite a few jobs.

The only place where the…

The only place where the alumni is really impressed with their coach right now is Virginia. It takes something like we are going through to truly appreciate your coach.

Reality Check. Unless…

Reality Check. Unless Donovan decides to take the job, the hire will be underwhelming, disappointing, and/or “the dumbest hire ever”. It’s a shit situation. Juwan would make the most people happy, but there’s no evidence that he would be a better college coach than Cooley or Prohm. I wouldn’t want to be the guy having to make the hire. There isn’t a realistic home run hire out there.

The Investigation was…

The Investigation was Addidas. Memphis, and presumably Penny’s AAU team, Nike. Guilty or innocent, his name wouldn’t have come up

Penny’s best NBA season in…

Penny’s best NBA season in the incoming class’ lifetimes was 10.6pts a game. His NBA career is pretty much irrelevant. Memphis has a history of paying players, the AAU coaches have a history of cheating. You are going to have a hard time convincing me that they are clean

Running an AAU team is…

Running an AAU team is pretty good circumstantial evidence for dirty money

Clemson has always cheated…

Clemson has always cheated and always will.

G-Strings and envelopes full…

G-Strings and envelopes full of $100 bills

He will die in Spokane…

He will die in Spokane. Never leaving. Why would he?

So the coach at Liberty or…

So the coach at Liberty or Yale would be a splash hire too?

@MaizeBlueA2 We could do a…

@MaizeBlueA2 We could do a whole lot worse than Shaka Smart. If Howard is even interested, he would leave in two years, at most, for a NBA job or he would be a dumpster fire

A school in Texas that’s…

A school in Texas that’s successful and dirty. Makes sense

If the background checks…

If the background checks work out, just offer the job to Steve Prohm. Smart wouldn’t be a bad choice at all. I agree Texas probably just isn’t the right place for him. In AA, he probably wouldn’t get quite the recruits he gets at Texas, but he wouldn’t get the guys getting ready for the draft in December either.

It keeps us from weeping…

It keeps us from weeping. Otherwise, all we have to do is think about what we’ve lost. It’s all sport

Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack…

Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack....those are the only two Butler players i can even name off the top of my head

Whoever voted Porter Moser…

Whoever voted Porter Moser first, go to your room. He ain’t nobody’s dream hire

If he had left two months…

If he had left two months ago, Fred Hoiberg would probably been hired within a week. Woulda, coulda, shoulda

Arizona has far from “got…

Arizona has far from “got away with it”. If I were a betting man, I would bet someone else is coaching there next season. As for LSU, Wade just signed a new deal which includes a just cause firing clause for Major NCAA violations. How the hell did the old contract not include that? He got busted cheating, the AD suspends him, and the AD gets fired? Typical $EC

Tempting, tempting

Tempting, tempting

No argument, but I think the sitting out a year thing is almost history. Just a random thought

Didn’t he take Wichita State…

Didn’t he take Wichita State to the Final Four?

In three more years, Wes…

In three more years, Wes Miller might be perfect. Too soon to tell. Wouldn’t be shocked if he eventually succeeds Roy Williams. Don’t think he’s ready quite yet for a power conference though

As for Warde, can’t we wait…

He ain’t Dave Brandon, at very least

As for Warde, can’t we wait…

As for Warde, can’t we wait at least 72 hours before we start trashing the guy? He has nothing to do with Coach B leaving. We don’t know what he’s thinking. He might really screw this up, but don’t talk like he has already. At least he supposedly has a list in case this happened. If true, he’s way ahead of the rest of us.

Just throwing an improbable…

Just throwing an improbable name out there. Geno Auriemma. Manuel worked with him at UCONN. Way out of the box, but he wins championships and gets top recruits. Crazy maybe, but better than pretty much the whole ‘realistic’ lists I’ve seen

If you want a short term…

If you want a short term solution, hire Bob McKillop for four or five years. Maybe have  a Coach in waiting on the staff. He would be a perfect caretaker short term. Kind of like Dave Cutcliffe. Not sexy, but you aren’t going to do much better this late in the process

Agree on Wright. Tony…

Agree on Wright. Tony Bennett is a Wisconsin guy, so he might miss the Midwest. Highly thought of us as a person, like Belein.  Probably a little more difficult to recruit at UVA than Michigan. He’ll always be third behind Duke and Carolina. I don’t think money is the number one thing for him. I see him finding home and staying for 25-30 years. Is that Charlottesville?

Recruiting at Winthrop and…

Recruiting at Winthrop and Wichita State is somewhere between difficult and impossible, at least as ranked recruits go

Don’t be so quick to dismiss…

Don’t be so quick to dismiss Bob McKillop. Bring him in for three or four years, maybe hire Pat Belein as an assistant, and groom him as coach in waiting.
