Clemson’s Dani Swinney against expansion of CFP to 12 teams

Submitted by JacquesStrappe on July 21st, 2021 at 2:54 AM

Dani says 12 teams for CFP is too many because there are not that many good teams that legitimately deserve to be in national championship conversation.

I'm waiting for Dabo Swinney to honor his words, walk away from his cushy job, and retire from college football after players started receiving compensation...like he said he would...ya know...like a supposed honest, faithful, Bible-thumping Christian would.

Just about any day now...

Guy was on the wrong side of history on that. He'll be on the wrong side of history here too.

Since Clemson has next to no competition anymore in the ACC, this is the right position if Dabo is forced to say something.  But he doesn't have to say anything, so this statement sounds pretty damn weak.

On top of that, having seen some real stinkers that Clemson barely pulled out to stay in playoff contention over the years, there are certainly enough teams to fill an entertaining and competitive 12 team playoff.  At least competitive with Clemson.

With NIL I truly think Florida State and Miami will come back from the dead. Miami has a pulse but they have not gotten over the hump. FSU is primed for this type of game - strong fanbase, alumni base, and a former football school. Miami is....Miami...

I want to agree with this.

Look at the kind of money already coming in around the country and NIL isn't even an organized force yet.

But look at MLB by way of comparison.  About 4-5 teams of 30 have a legitimate shot at winning the World Series.  Because the rich get richer.  Luxury tax did not change a thing.

Ummm, how many times did the Yankees win the World Series before luxury tax and after? Luxury tax has crippled teams that make bad decisions when awarding huge contracts in free agency, which has helped new teams emerge.

The Yankees have won 4 titles since the first Luxury tax in 1997, more than any other team except the Red Sox (another big-spending team). Sorry, you take is just factually wrong. Since 2003, every team that has paid the Luxury tax has won at least one World Series, except the Tigers (and even then they went to the WS twice, sigh). So much for your theory that paying the tax has crippled teams and helped others emerge. The Dodgers have had the highest (or close to it) payroll for the last few years, and won the World Series last year and went to it in 2017 and 2018.

I’m not a fan of old “aw shucks” either, but he’s not wrong. There’s typically one or two teams that are just a different animal than even 3 and 4, let alone teams 10 thru 12. I’d cap it at 6 or 8 teams.

Kids want to go to one of the 4-6 schools that have been making the play-offs.  If there are 12 teams it will expand the schools that kids want to go to to 18-24.

NIL will allow the 24th school on that list to pay their top 2-10 players some cash out in the open like the SEC has done for years, which should help level the playing field a bit as well.

I want Michigan to compete in NIL money because I want Michigan to win, but it all feels sort of gross.  It will take getting used to.

There was no "divine right" that Clemson would be the 2nd best program of the last 10 years. In fact, if you had to pick a team in 2012 that would most challenge Bama over the next 10 years, Clemson wouldn't have made most fans top 15 picks.

I think Dabo Swinney is a complete tool and hypocrite as a human being. As a football coach and program builder he is excellent. I don't think he's saying this for the benefit of his program. I think he actually feels this way. Do you think he's worried about playing a possible Wisconsin or TCU in the Peach Bowl?

Exactly this. Four playoff teams has turned out to be the worst possible number. When you had only two teams making a National Championship game, there was enough variance to prevent the top handful of teams from stockpiling all the best talent year in and year out. No team had an iron grip on a championship game spot, so there was much less incentive to go to any single school just to get into the championship game.

But four has turned out to provide a near guarantee to a handful of schools who can turn around and use this near guarantee to stockpile talent, further cementing the guarantee. With eight or twelve teams, you'd see more schools able to plausibly argue that they can get into the playoffs. Why go to Bama or OSU and be stuck behind a bunch of other five star talent when you can be the star player on a playoff team at Penn State or Michigan or Florida or Texas A&M?

So of course Dabo is against expansion: he loves the situation where there are only four or five teams worthy of making the playoffs because his team is one of them and will remain one of them if nothing changes.

The 4 team playoff has definitely been detrimental to most teams. There are 2 tiers:

Tier 1)

  • Alabama
  • Clemson
  • OSU

Tier 2)

  • Who cares

The top 3 have such an advantage with recruiting. Their approach is you want to win a championship play here.

5 star safety Keon Saab recently signed with Clemson. He had 5 schools in his shortlist. The only one without an OV - Clemson.

OSU had the highest average ranked class in history in 2021 but Bama's was even higher. Saban's pitch is,  "The guys you practice against are better than the guys you play against." And he's right.

So if you're in the top tier and you attract the best talent without even having to stop watching YouTube cat videos, why would you want to change it?

Makes sense, so is Saban & Gene Smith.  They already make the playoffs a lot and now have to beat more teams to win.  The current system works for them.  The expansion is good for the top 5-12 who are quality teams, but not quite good enough to get in with the old system.  Those are basically all your 1-loss P5 teams, a handful of 2-loss teams P5, and maybe an undefeated non-P5 like a Cincy. But, Bama, Clemson, & OSU won't like it.  It's just one more game to have to play.

The continuing rhetoric of how teams that were assuredly worse but didnt play the best dont deserve a chance. If one out of 5 years an 8-12 team makes the final four ill be happy with it. Like NIL it probably wont help but it sure beats the “this team is surely better, now dont let them play and see” crowd.

This 100%.

I know it’s not the same as basketball, but looking at percentage of NCAA tournaments won by seed, this is what we get:

#1 seed: 63%
#2 seed: 14%
#3 seed: 11%

This essentially means the teams ranked 5-12 won 25% of the national championships. If the new football playoff gives us anything close to that, I’d be ecstatic.

Blue@LSU

July 21st, 2021 at 9:17 AM ^

As I said in my post, those are percentages of tournaments won, not the number of tournaments won. So my math is fine. I think you do not read well? ?

FYI: I limited it to the 5-12 ranked teams (2 & 3 seeds) like would be included in the football expansion. If we go further, then we find:

#4 seed: 3%

#5 seed: 0%

#6 seed: 3%

#7 seed: 3%

#8 seed: 3%

Which adds up to 100% of the tournaments won. Capiche?

Edited. I now see why you say 12%, but I still don't see why that's relevant. A 12-team football playoff would essentially be an NCAA tourney with only 1, 2, and 3 seeds (4 teams in each seed). Why does it matter if the 4-16 seeds (teams ranked roughly #13-64) *only* won 12% of the tournaments? Those teams wouldn't be included in a 12-team playoff (or tournament).

He may be kind of right, but what a smug piece of shit. The NCAA basketball tournament invites 64 (+play in teams) to a tournament. There are not 64 potential national champions in basketball every year. The point of the expansion is not to give the #8 ranked team in the country to prove that it would win the national championship. The point is to create more buzz and turn it into a bigger playoff picture rather than just shoe horning the same 6 teams on rotation.

Eh, with only 5 players on the court at a time, and the vagaries of shooting (even great shooters can have cold streaks, and vice versa), it's a lot easier to have upsets in basketball. And that's pretty much universally regarded as the best part of the early rounds of March Madness, seeing Cinderellas pull upsets. If upsets weren't as prevalent in basketball, and the first two rounds were pretty much all blowouts, I think people might have a very different view of the merits of having a 64 team tournament.

Moving back to football, there have already been plenty of blowouts in the four team playoff. I just have a hard time seeing teams ranked below the top six or so being competitive with any kind of consistency, and if those teams are almost never going to be competitive, why are we including them?

PUH LEEZE...He doesnt want the gravy train to end,  allowing more teams hurts HIS chances...give me a break,  How SELFISH of him...,dont do whats good for the sports  or the fans (you know the ones that PAY for everything)  only whats good for HIM

With this type of logic Michigan baseball would not of been given a shot 2 years ago. They would have been told they ain’t good enough to deserve a shot.

This is what’s wrong with FBS football,a committee determines who is worthy and tv has a way too much say in CFB.Bo talks about it in his first book.

The NFL is all about parity with their rules. That is the true measure of who can coach. Not who is the best at stockpiling talent.Expand playoff to 16-24 and limit scholarships to 75.Play all games up to the finals on campus.Just like FCS

WOW, what a revelation from one of the Monarch's of the current CFB landscape.  He doesn't feel the noblemen should be allowed the opportunity for the golden trophy....

Hey Dabo, Monarchy went out the window 250 YEARS AGO!!!!!
