CJ Stokes to the Portal

Never recovered from the Maryland fumble. Good luck to him.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
Best of luck young man.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
good luck to CJ
December 11th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
Our portal free streak ends. Good luck CJ.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
I wish him the best.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
Wish him well. Nice player, but we have Cabana, Mullings, Hall, and Marshall. And Edwards if he stays.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:02 AM ^
Good luck! Don't go to state.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:04 AM ^
I'm sure he'll go somewhere in the South.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:08 AM ^
Always liked how he ran. Reminded me of Brandon Minor. Hope he finds a great spot!
December 11th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
Wish the transfer portal was more dedicated to guys like this who it just didn't work out for but can go find playing time elsewhere, vs being a shopping mall for the highest bidders.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
A few good-hearted yet naive people probably thought this WAS going to be what the portal was going to be used for.
And yet, we have Power-5 Starters leaving their current school they transferred to in order to see who is willing to shill out the most dollars.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:11 AM ^
Seems like it was the plan all year and he played in less than 4 games to preserve the redshirt.
December 11th, 2023 at 6:45 PM ^
Correct. A couple of other guys as well who will announce later. Some wanted to be able to graduate early and get a Michigan degree and Harbaugh was all for it. Lots of team chemistry on this team.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
not stoked by this news :(
December 11th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
wish him the best
December 11th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
There is no RB news that can disrupt my Benjamin Hall hype other then BH in the portal. I think the guy is going to be a star.
Tough river to swim to PT: Mullings, Hall, Cabana, Marshall, Kapana and Edwards hasn't released his intentions. I do think he goes...
December 11th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
he may declare his intent to transfer to the WR room
December 11th, 2023 at 6:46 PM ^
Hall will get a lot of carries next season. He’ll either be a 1B or be behind Etienne if he transfers in, but he’ll still get his fair share. Year 3 should be a big year for Hall, Hart loves his development so far and he should be able to build on an upcoming solid year 2.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:17 AM ^
Has all the tools to be a good G5 or lower P5 back elsewhere. Always liked him but seems like the staff prefers guys with more eye-popping traits.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
As a title contender that likes to run the ball, Michigan needs the guys with high level traits. You aren't going to beat Ohio State, Bama, Texas, or whoever with a RB who's merely good.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:24 AM ^
Not a surprise - hope he lands somewhere and is successful. He's got talent but that depth chart got scary real quick.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
For a year and a half, I”ve been wondering what happened to Stokes. He got off to a really promising start, had a bunch of nice runs, fumbled once, and then he hardly ever saw the field again.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:37 AM ^
I think it would be interesting to experiment with Orji as a back as well - in particular if the QB snaps never materialize - has some significant upside, makes people miss, has plenty of speed and at almost 240lbs definitely makes the defense have to focus on tackling.
December 11th, 2023 at 2:02 PM ^
Maybe a LB? Has the Mikey look.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:41 AM ^
His carries took a flat spin of a nose dive after he missed that cut against OSU last year. That was probably a TD left on the field, and he never recovered from it. Call it injuries if you will, but it never felt like the coaches trusted him again.
Which is odd, because Edwards' misses a bunch of cuts in every game...
December 11th, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
I don't think it was the missed the cut that lost the coaches trust. It's more likely fumbling and just not being productive.
DE misses cuts but the explosiveness and talent is there that he can make a huge play. The payoff is bigger, you get more chances when you can make the big play.
I liked Stokes, but he doesnt seem like a homerun threat, and if you are a guy whose value is in consistently getting 4-5 yards you can't fumble or not get 4-5 yards.
December 11th, 2023 at 6:49 PM ^
This is correct. He was never going to develop into a starter because of the guys Michigan was bringing in. He bad a tough talk with Hart and realized he wanted an opportunity elsewhere to try and be a starter. He’ll leave in good favor with the team and he has mad respect for Hart. This is how the portal should work.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:43 AM ^
Mr Ohio and Cabana better step up next year
December 11th, 2023 at 10:52 AM ^
Shame but not a surprise. With Kalel Mullings onboard and Benjamin Hall seemingly up for a bigger role the room was getting pretty crowded.
Here's hoping he has the same level of success at a new school that Charbonnet did.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:54 AM ^
Shit, we're turning into osu...
The ship is sinking!
December 11th, 2023 at 10:59 AM ^
Godspeed. Hopefully, he finds a team where he can showcase his talent; preferably, some team not on Michigan's schedule.
December 11th, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
Best wishes to CJ! Seems like a good player that could be a great #1 RB in the right program. He'd be a good fit at one-cut, zone run type of scheme, IMO.
December 11th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
Don't understand the RB ball distribution this year.
Neither Corum or Edwards had their best years, yet nobody else really got a chance to carry the ball and that's with all the cupcakes on our schedule.
Mullings 32x
Hall 15x
Stokes 4x
How does Stokes only get 4 carries for the entire year after the promise he showed last year? I guess it's Hart's way of telling the kid to transfer. Also, Hall only getting 15 carries...Hart is clearly paving the way for the 2 talented incoming freshmen.
December 11th, 2023 at 3:55 PM ^
Hall only got 15 carries so they could preserve his redshirt. they are trying to spread some of these classes out. Also CJ was hurt for a decent amount of games and by the time he got healthy Mullings had cemented his spot as the RB3. Going to be a very competitive room even if Donovan decides to go pro.
These are all the scholarship backs we could potentially have next year:
1. Donovan Edwards (SR)
2. Kalel Mullings (5th)
3. Benjamin Hall (RS FR)
4. Cole Cabana (RS FR)
5. Jordan Marshall (FR)
6. Tavierre Dunlap (RS JR)
7. Micah Ka’apana (FR) (Probably going to redshirt)
December 11th, 2023 at 11:11 AM ^
I enjoyed watching CJ Stokes getting carries and was surprised last year when his touches declined. I do wish him well at the school at he chooses and hope that he gets more playing time.
December 11th, 2023 at 11:14 AM ^
So if guys enter the transfer portal, especially if the coaches encourage it, as suggested by others here, do they get to participate in the post season games or are they basically gone? That would suck to be on a potentially National Championship winning team and not get to win a National Championship.
I was on a State Championship wrestling team as a starter and even though I really didn't contribute a whole lot to the actual championship, I'm still really proud of being on that team. I hope Michigan finds a way to let those guys be a part of the celebration/team.
December 11th, 2023 at 6:52 PM ^
He’ll be considered a national champion to Michigan if/when they win. He’s still considered part of this team. He’s leaving on good terms and will be celebrated along with everyone else if Michigan wins the championship.
December 11th, 2023 at 11:43 AM ^
CJ Stokes has his chances. The emergence of Kalel Mullings also put CJ down the depth chart. We haven't seen much of Cole Cabana at RB and he has potential.
Best wished to CJ Stokes in the future.
December 11th, 2023 at 11:46 AM ^
He has Mullings and hall ahead of him. And Orji is ahead of all if he plays RB.
December 11th, 2023 at 3:13 PM ^
This is one of the ones that is a huge bummer to me. That isn't anything towards him. I thought he had "it". Maybe not "it" enough to be a star, but enough to be a very solid contributor. This seems like one of those situations where he could just go somewhere and be a star and maybe it just didn't work for whatever reason here.
Seemed like a solid guy and teammate. Wish him the best.
